    At the heart of this book are some trials conducted in Athens in the fourth century BCE. In each case, the charges involved a combination of supernatural activities, including potion-brewing and cult activity; the defendants were all women. Because of the brevity of the ancient sources, and their lack of agreement, the precise charges are unclear; the reasons for taking these women to court, even condemning some of them to die, remain mysterious. This book takes the complexity and confusion of the evidence not as a riddle to be solved, but as revealing multiple social dynamics. It explores the changing factors—material, ideological, and psychological—that may have provoked these events. It focuses in particular on the dual role of envy (phthonos) and gossip as processes by which communities identified people and activities that were dangerous, and examines how and why those local, even individual, dynamics may have come to shape official civic decisions during a time of perceived hardship. At first sight so puzzling, these trials come to provide a vivid glimpse of the sociopolitical environment of Athens during the early to mid-fourth century BCE, including responses to changes in women’s status and behaviour, and attitudes to particular supernatural/religious activities within the city. This study reveals some of the characters, events, and local social processes that shaped an emergent concept of magic: it suggests that the legal boundary of acceptable behaviour was shifting, not only within the legal arena, but also with the active involvement of society beyond the courts.

    This new critical volume, the second to appear in the three-volume Lectura Dantis, contains expert, focused commentary on the Purgatorio by thirty-three international scholars, each of whom presents to the nonspecialist reader one of the cantos of the transitional middle cantica of Dante's unique Christian epic. The cast of characters is as colorful as before, although this time most of them are headed for salvation. The canto-by-canto commentary allows each contributor his or her individual voice and results in a deeper, richer awareness of Dante's timeless aspirations and achievements

    In den bisherigen Entwürfen einer Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte des Neids gilt das späte 18. Jahrhundert als Wendepunkt: Während mittelalterliche Theologen Neid als Sünde des Teufels verurteilt hätten, funktioniere die Distinktionsemotion in der Moderne als Instrument der Reflexion des Sozialen. Dieses Narrativ widerlegt die vorliegende Studie, indem sie anhand mittelhochdeutscher und lateinischer Texte des 12. und 13. Jahrhunderts nachweist, dass das Erzählen von Neid zur Verhandlung höfischer Ordnung genutzt wird. Ausgehend von einer differenzierten Betrachtung der evaluativen, relationalen, motivationalen und deutenden Dimension von Neid kommt die Studie zu drei Ergebnissen: Erstens stört Neid die höfische Ordnung nicht nur, ihm kommen trotz des Status als Hauptsünde auch ordnungsbewahrende Funktionen zu. Zweitens wird Neid in den Narrationen als Form strategischen Erzählens zur Rezeptionslenkung eingesetzt. Drittens trägt das Erzählen von Neid dazu bei, die Bruchstellen einer auf Gunst basierenden Herrschaftsordnung aufzuzeigen und Veränderungen am Hof zu legitimieren. Auf diese Weise leistet die Studie einen wichtigen Beitrag sowohl zur Debatte um die Neubewertung negativer Emotionen als auch zur historischen Narratologie Unlike older research, which viewed envy as a democratic emotion, this study examines how envy functions in twelfth- and thirteenth-century texts.     In den bisherigen Entwürfen einer Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte des Neids gilt das späte 18. Jahrhundert als Wendepunkt: Während mittelalterliche Theologen Neid als Sünde des Teufels verurteilt hätten, funktioniere die Distinktionsemotion in der Moderne als Instrument der Reflexion des Sozialen. Dieses Narrativ widerlegt die vorliegende Studie, indem sie anhand mittelhochdeutscher und lateinischer Texte des 12. und 13. Jahrhunderts nachweist, dass das Erzählen von Neid zur Verhandlung höfischer Ordnung genutzt wird. Ausgehend von einer differenzierten Betrachtung der evaluativen, relationalen, motivationalen und deutenden Dimension von Neid kommt die Studie zu drei Ergebnissen: Erstens stört Neid die höfische Ordnung nicht nur, ihm kommen trotz des Status als Hauptsünde auch ordnungsbewahrende Funktionen zu. Zweitens wird Neid in den Narrationen als Form strategischen Erzählens zur Rezeptionslenkung eingesetzt. Drittens trägt das Erzählen von Neid dazu bei, die Bruchstellen einer auf Gunst basierenden Herrschaftsordnung aufzuzeigen und Veränderungen am Hof zu legitimieren. Auf diese Weise leistet die Studie einen wichtigen Beitrag sowohl zur Debatte um die Neubewertung negativer Emotionen als auch zur historischen Narratologie Unlike older research, which viewed envy as a democratic emotion, this study examines how envy functions in twelfth- and thirteenth-century texts. In cross-genre text analyses, it shows how the narration of envy is used to steer reception and as a medium in which to reflect upon the courtly order. The volume thereby makes a contribution to the debate about the revaluation of so-called negative emotions

    Envy is an unpleasant emotion. If individuals anticipate that comparing their payoff with the (potentially higher) payoff of others will make them envious, they may want to actively avoid information about other people’s payoffs. Given the opportunity to reduce another person’s payoff, an individual’s envy may trigger behavior that is detrimental to welfare. In this case, if individuals anticipate that they will react in a welfare-reducing way, they may also avoid information about other people’s payoffs from the outset. We investigated these two hypotheses using three experiments. We found that 13% of our potentially envious subjects avoided information when they did not have the opportunity to reduce another participant’s payoff. Psychological scales do not explain this behavior. We also found that voluntarily uninformed subjects did neither deduct less of the payoff nor less frequently than subjects who could not avoid the information.

    We conduct an interdisciplinary meta-analysis to aggregate the knowledge from empirical estimates of inequality aversion reported from 1999 to 2022. In particular, we examine 85 estimates of disadvantageous inequality aversion (or envy) and advantageous inequality aversion (or guilt) from 26 articles in economics, psychology, neuroscience and computer science that structurally estimate the Fehr and Schmidt (1999) model of social preferences. Our meta-analysis supports the presence of inequality concerns: the mean envy coefficient is 0:426 with a 95% probability that the true value lies in the interval [0:240; 0:620]; the mean guilt coefficient is 0:290 with a 95% probability that the true value lies in the interval [0:212; 0:366]. Moreover, we observe high levels of heterogeneity, both across studies and across individuals, with estimated parameters sensitive to the experimental task and the subject population.

    We take into account that envy (relative consumption concerns) is more pronounced in the present than in the future. We consider a Ramsey-type model in which agents differ only in their initial capital endowments but are identical in their exogenous parameters. Agents' preferences exhibit present-biased envy: agents are naive and care about how their consumption levels compare to that of others in the current period. Our results suggest that present-biased envy affects both the level of inequality and the income level in an economy. First, present-biased envy generates the Matthew effect (the relatively rich get richer while the relatively poor get poorer), leading to a highly unequal long-run distribution of wealth. After some finite time, only those agents who were the wealthiest from the outset own the entire capital stock. All other agents are in the maximum borrowing state and spend their wages to repay the debt. Second, present-biased envy makes agents effectively more impatient, lowering the long-run capital stock and the aggregate income level compared to those in an economy without envy.
