    This publication explores the presence of the shared heritage and interdependence of poetry composed around the theme of wine in diverse literary traditions of the Islamic world. The specialist contributions discuss multiple aspects of the literary polyphony of wine in the pre-modern Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Ottoman Turkish, and Urdu literatures during the first millennium of the Islamic era. Presenting these together and in dialogue with one another, the volume offers a comparative perspective on a long, varied, but singularly mutual tradition. It traces how this poetry develops, flourishes and matures across linguistic and geographic, confessional and social, aesthetic and artistic boundaries within the regions of the religiously and culturally diverse Islamic world, from al-Andalūs to India.

    Die politisch-theologischen Antipoden Franz Kafka (1883–1924) und Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) hatten sachlich einiges gemeinsam: Sie waren beide Juristen und Avantgardisten; sie kritisierten den rechtspositivistischen Anstaltsstaat, personalisierten und dämonisierten die bürokratische Herrschaft. Darum spiegelte Schmitt seine Justizerfahrung nach 1945 auch in Kafka-Notaten und betrachtete die Bundesrepublik als „Kafkanien“. Reinhard Mehring erörtert irritierende Nähen in der dystopischen Wahrnehmung des modernen Staates als Baustein zur politischen Wirkungsgeschichte Kafkas und zur Verdeutlichung der Rechtsskepsis von Schmitts Spätwerk. Generally considered antipodes in political as well as theological matters, Franz Kafka (1883–1924) and Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) had more in common that meets the eye: they were both jurists and avant-gardists; they criticized the legal positivist institutional state, personalized and demonized bureaucratic rule. That is why Schmitt penned notes on Kafka in order to reflect his judicial experience after 1945, regarding the German Federal Republic as "Kafkanien". Reinhard Mehring discusses the irritating proximities both authors show concerning the dystopian perception of the modern state as elements for the political history of Kafka's impact and for clarifying the legal skepticism of Schmitt's late work.

    Biological literature of the Roman imperial period remains somehow 'underestimated'. It is even quite difficult to speak of biological literature for this period at all: biology (apart from medicine) did not represent, indeed, a specific 'subgenre' of scientific literature. Nevertheless, writings as disparate as Philo of Alexandria's Alexander, Plutarch's De sollertia animalium or Bruta ratione uti, Aelian's De Natura Animalium, Oppian's Halieutika, Pseudo-Oppian's Kynegetika, and Basil of Caeserea's Homilies on the Creation engage with zoological, anatomic, or botanical questions. Poikile Physis examines how such writings appropriate, adapt, classify, re-elaborate and present biological knowledge which originated within the previous, mainly Aristotelian, tradition. It offers a holistic approach to these works by considering their reception of scientific material, their literary as well as rhetorical aspects, and their interaction with different socio-cultural conditions. The result of an interdisciplinary discussion among scholars of Greek studies, philosophy and history of science, the volume provides an initial analysis of forms and functions of biological literature in the imperial period

    This article considers the unique case of the birds in Amitābha’s Pure Land, Sukhāvatī. Pure Land scriptures highlight the two main roles of the birds: their ornamental beauty and their amplification of the Dharma through their birdsong. In addition to the scriptures, the birds appear in Chinese commentarial and liturgical literature and popular tales. Although scriptures indicate that the birds are Amitābha’s skillful creations, they provided a familiar connection in this life to the Pure Land for those who aspired to be reborn there. This allowed for Pure Land practitioners to reimagine their spaces to gain a momentary experience of the Pure Land on earth.

    "Viele nordafrikanische Staaten blicken auf eine jüngste Vergangenheit zurück, in der systematisch Menschenrechte verletzt, Kritiker inhaftiert, offene Proteste verboten, Gefangene gefoltert und politische Gegner unschädlich gemacht wurden. Dass in einem Transformationsprozess von einer autoritären Staatsstruktur hin zu einer demokratischen Gesellschaftsform neben der juridischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit auch die Erinnerung an erlebtes Unrecht eine zentrale Rolle spielt, hat sich in der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts zweimal deutlich gezeigt. Im Unterschied zur wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Unrechtserfahrung unter zwei sehr unterschiedlichen autoritären Regimen ist die kritische Untersuchung der Erinnerung an Unrecht im arabischen Raum erst im Entstehen begriffen. Trotz dieses Unterschiedes ist eine Engführung deutscher und arabischer Perspektiven auf diese Thematik, wie sie der vorliegende Band unternimmt, gewinnbringend und spannend für beide Perspektiven und betritt zugleich wissenschaftliches Neuland. Der Band präsentiert Ergebnisse einer dreijährigen interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit deutscher und nordafrikanischer Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler. Die Beiträge widmen sich unterschiedlichen Formen des Erinnerns und reflektieren die Chancen und Herausforderungen einer Erinnerung an Unrecht aus philosophischer, theologischer, gesellschaftstheoretischer, sprach-, kultur- und literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Dieses Buch versteht sich als philosophische Intervention zu dieser Debatte und argumentiert, dass die »Wand aus Glas« zwischen Mensch und Tier niemals ganz überwunden werden kann. Anhand ausgewählter Texte aus einem breiten Spektrum von Bereichen wie Tierforschung, Tierphilosophie und Literatur bietet es einen nuancierten Blick auf Fragen der anthropologischen Differenz, beleuchtet die Problematik von Forschungssettings und diskutiert aktuelle Ansätze der Tierethik bis zur Zoopolis. Empathic monkeys, friendship with dogs, complete identification with a hawk – in research, animal rights movements, autobiographies and fictional texts, the boundaries between humans and animals are increasingly disappearing or are even being called into question altogether. This book is a philosophical contribution to this debate and argues that the "glass wall" between humans and animals can never be completely overcome. Using selected texts from a wide range of fields such as animal research, animal philosophy and literature, it offers a nuanced look at questions of anthropological difference, sheds light on the problems of research settings and discusses current approaches to animal ethics, including zoopolis.
