There is a rapidly growing body of literature addressing women and Jewish tradition, much of which seeks to supplement Jewish texts such as the Talmud and midrash where female voices are generally absent. Biblical Women in the Midrash: A Sourcebook also seeks to influence the tradition by both providing an opening for women to study the Bible and rabbinic midrash, and by adding women's voices to the body of Jewish writings in the form of modern midrashim The book opens with an introduction to Bible, midrash, and Jewish study in order to teach basic study skills and encourage further, independent learning Individual chapters on several biblical women follow, each providing three elements: the biblical text pertaining to the woman; the rabbinic midrashim, which comment or expand on the story or character; and modern midrashim about the same woman, in the form of poems and stories by some of the most influential, contemporary Jewish women thinkers, including Alicia Ostriker, Marge Piercy, Judith Plaskow, and Ellen Umansky, among others

She is that seductive woman to be feared, who leads one to utter destruction, and has often been translated as 'the adulteress' and 'the strange woman' in Proverbs 1-9. However, the Hebrew explicitly refers to her as a 'foreign woman' and a 'strange woman'. This book argues against the former translation and identifies a motif of the 'foreign woman' within the Hebrew scripture where she originates. It also continues to trace how this motif develops after she leaves Proverbs 1-9 to the later Jewish wisdom literature. Nancy Nam Hoon Tan, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China. This study is on the figure ??? ??? and ?????, also commonly called the ‘Strange Woman’ in Proverbs 1-9. It is an attempt to understand the meaning which defines her, and the origin and development of her motif. The first part argues against defining her as a sexual predator, but as an ethnic foreigner according to the lexical studies of ?? and ???. It traces her origin within the Hebrew scripture, the legal documents and especially to the DtrH`s portrayal of foreign women/wives. Hence, it distinguishes the two motifs: the motif of the adulteress and the motif of the foreign woman, the latter, which symbolizes the temptation to apostasy. The study will then go on to explain how the writer of Proverbs 1-9 employs this motif of the foreign woman in his poetic composition. The second part tracks the development of this motif through the subsequent Jewish Wisdom literature and observes how it changes and loses the ‘foreignness’ of her original motif in Eccl. 7:26, 4Q184, LXX Proverbs, Hebrew Ben Sira, Greek Ben Sira, and finally disappears in Wisdom of Solomon. It proffers to understand this gradual transformation against a background of social and religious change.
