Zusammenfassung: "Anne Enright has publicly evidenced gender imbalance in publishing mentioning that men mostly praise books written by men. ANNE ENRIGHT. Feminine Aesthetics: Writing, Mothering, Spiraling claims that Enright advocates for this cause by giving voice, in her literature, to those she considers the most repressed in the society she reports to. By telling stories of pregnancy, mothers, daughters and grandmothers, she empowers women, opens up possibilities for the future and give expression to opinions long buried. ANNE ENRIGHT. Feminine Aesthetics: Writing, Mothering, Spiraling retraces most of Enright's prose and it comes up with an original account of her aesthetics: Enright writes in a spiral, her works reveals a spiraling aesthetics in which the spiral is feminine and it lifts women's reputation up. In this aesthetical process, the author uses narrative strategies to guide the reader in a circular-upward progression towards social self-awareness. In reading Enright's literary texts, the individual is led to perceive a self-reflection by exploring the inner self and the body of her characters. Then, carried by the spiral, the narrative promotes an elevation of the reader towards self-awareness of his or her materiality immersed in a great realm of human relations"--(Provided by publisher.)

This study is the first comprehensive appreciation of the largely underrated Austrian author Ferdinand von Saar (1833-1906). The textual analysis concentrates on his short stories, where he essays a discursive panorama of the late stages of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Despite his idealistic desire for harmony he is increasingly overtaken by destructive forces. Identity and traditional gender roles threaten to collapse, a development reflected by the topographic localization of the texts in 19th century Vienna. Saar is one of the precursors of modernity around the turn of the century. But the ambivalence in his texts also points to the anxiety triggered in the individual by this process.

The noble wives in María de Zayas's Desengaños suffer terrible fates: one is beheaded, another poisoned, one is cemented into a chimney, while yet another is locked into a tiny wall closet where she dies. The hallmark of Zayas's aesthetics, these characters are the central reason why her fiction has increased in popularity through the ages. Yet their stories pose an apparent contradiction between the author's pro-female rhetoric and her gusto for killing model women, then beautifying their mutilated cadavers.Dressed to Kill reconciles Zayas's Desengaños with the age in which it was written, contextualizing the book in baroque poetics, the Spanish honour code, and fifteenth-century martyr saints' lives. Elizabeth Rhodes elegantly uncovers Zayas's intention to reform the Spanish nobility by displaying noble misbehaviour and its deadly consequences. Her book concludes by detailing the Desengaños' intriguing influence on the aesthetic base of Gothic literature by revealing that its authors were avid readers of Zayas.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian literary world has not only experienced a true blossoming of women's prose, but has also witnessed a number of female authors assume the roles of literary trendsetters and authoritative critics of their culture. In this first in-depth study of how Ukrainian women's prose writing was able to re-emerge so powerfully after being marginalized in the Soviet era, Oleksandra Wallo examines the writings and literary careers of leading contemporary Ukrainian women authors, such as Oksana Zabuzhko, Ievheniia Kononenko, and Maria Matios. Her study shows how these women reshaped literary culture with their contributions to the development of the Ukrainian national imaginary in the wake of the Soviet state's disintegration. The interjection of women's voices and perspectives into the narratives about the nation has often permitted these writers to highlight the diversity of the national picture and the complexity of the national story. Utilizing insights from postcolonial and nationalism studies, Wallo's book theorizes the interdependence between the national imaginary and narrative plots, and scrutinizes how prominent Ukrainian women authors experimented with literary form in order to rewrite the story of women and nationhood.
