    Literary and popular culture has often focused its attention on women readers, particularly since early Victorian times. In Reading Women, an esteemed group of new and established scholars provides a close study of the evolution of the woman reader by examining a wide range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century media, including Antebellum scientific treatises, Victorian paintings, and Oprah Winfrey's televised book club, as well as the writings of Charlotte Bronte͏̈, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Zora Neale Hurston.Attending especially to what, how, and why women read, Reading Women brings together a rich array of subjects that sheds light on the defining role the woman reader has played in the formation not only of literary history, but of British and American culture. The contributors break new ground by focusing on the impact representations of women readers have had on understandings of literacy and certain reading practices, the development of book and print culture, and the categorization of texts into high and low cultural forms.

Ich-Identität und traditionelle Geschlechterrollen drohen zu zerfallen, was sich gleichzeitig in der topographischen Verortung der Texte im Wien des 19. Jahrhunderts widerspiegelt. Saar ist Wegbereiter der Moderne um 1900; die Ambivalenz seiner Texte verweist aber auch auf die Angst, die dieser Prozess im Individuum auslöst. This study is the first comprehensive appreciation of the largely underrated Austrian author Ferdinand von Saar (1833-1906). The textual analysis concentrates on his short stories, where he essays a discursive panorama of the late stages of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Despite his idealistic desire for harmony he is increasingly overtaken by destructive forces. Identity and traditional gender roles threaten to collapse, a development reflected by the topographic localization of the texts in 19th century Vienna. Saar is one of the precursors of modernity around the turn of the century. But the ambivalence in his texts also points to the anxiety triggered in the individual by this process.

    Social stereotypes (e.g. images of women) are language-based and are thus reflected in a society's designative and descriptive practices. With reference to literary discourse in 19th century girls' books, the present study develops a method for the reconstruction of such language-based images by analyzing (a) references to persons and (b) collocations. The author demonstrates inter alia how the category of the Backfisch (a now largely obsolete but formerly widely used expression for »teenage girl«) and the image of women bound up with it developed between 1850 and 1914. Thus the book also represents a contribution to the history of mentality in the 19th century. Soziale Stereotype, wie z.B. Frauenbilder, sind sprachlich geprägt und spiegeln sich in der habituellen Bezeichnungs- und Beschreibungspraxis einer Gesellschaft wider. Im vorliegenden Buch wird - anhand des mädchenliterarischen Diskurses des 19. Jahrhunderts - eine Methode zur Rekonstruktion solcher sprachgeprägter Menschenbilder entwickelt, die sich auf die Analyse von Personenbezeichnungen und Kollokationen stützt. Die Autorin weist u.a. nach, wie sich die Kategorie des "Backfischs" und das damit verbundene Frauenbild zwischen 1850 und 1914 ausformt, und leistet dadurch einen Beitrag zur Mentalitätsgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts.
