"What do we watch when we watch war? At a time when spectacle and conflict have joined forces via audio-visual technologies in ways that are more powerful than ever, who now manages public perceptions of war and how? Watching War on the Twenty-First Century Stage: Spectacles of Conflict examines how theatre in the UK has staged, debated and challenged the ways in which spectacle is habitually weaponized in times of war. In this original and interdisciplinary interrogation Clare Finburgh provides a richly provocative account of the structuring role that spectacle plays in warfare, engaging with the works of philosopher Guy Debord, cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard, visual studies specialist Marie-José Mondzain, and performance scholar Hans-Thies Lehmann. Throughout her study, Finburgh offers coherence to a large and expanding field of theatrical war representations by analysing a wide spectrum of works, including expressionist drama, documentary theatre, comedy, musical satire and dance theatre: among the productions considered are Nigel Jamieson's Honour Bound, Lola Arias's MINEFIELD, Mark Ravenhill's Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat, Hayley Squires's Vera Vera Vera, Lone Twin's Alice Bell, Richard Norton-Taylor's verbatim tribunal play Tactical Questioning, and Dennis Kelly's Osama the Hero. Through her analysis, Finburgh demonstrates how features unique to the theatrical art--the construction of a fiction in the presence of the audience--can present possibilities for a more informed engagement with how spectacles of war are produced and circulated."-- By way of an introduction -- An introduction to war and/as spectacle -- Helmets--soldiering as spectacle -- Headscarves--'terrorism' as spectacle -- Hoods--human rights abuses omitted from spectacle -- Conclusiviolenceiolece without violence'

In times of crisis, we often turn to artists for truth-telling and memory-keeping. There is no greater crisis than war, and in this sumptuously illustrated volume, we find a comprehensive visual, cultural, and historical account of the ways in which armed conflict has been represented by artists. Covering the last two centuries, from the Crimean War to the present day, the book shows how the artistic portrayal of war has changed, from a celebration of heroic exploits to a more modern, troubled, and perhaps truthful depiction of warfare and its consequences. The book investigates broad patterns as well as specific genres and themes of war art, and features more than 400 color illustrations by artists including Paul Nash, Judy Chicago, Pablo Picasso, Melanie Friend, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, Käthe Kollwitz, Joseph Beuys, Yves Klein, Robert Rauschenberg, Dora Meeson, Otto Dix, and many others. The volume also highlights the work of often overlooked artists, including children, non-Europeans, and prisoners of war. A wide range of subjects, from front-line combat to behind-the-lines wartime experiences are represented in paintings, etchings, photography, film, digital art, comics, and graffiti

Between 1800 and 1900 popular perceptions of the military underwent a significant transformation. The reputation of the 'rapacious and licentious soldiery' was replaced by a widerspread enthusiasm for the soldier as patriot and hero, as personified in Kipling's 'Tommy Atkins'. This more positive attitude towards the military was also accompanied by greater popular support for warfare itself. This book examines the military and cultural background to the shift in popular reactions and traces the manner in which new values were inculcated through a variety of media. 'Popular imperialism and the military' demonstrates forcefully how changing attitudes towards the military were inseparably bound up with the dominant ethos of imperialism. Perceptions of warfare became shaped by the predominantly colonial location of British war in the late nineteenth century, with these 'small wars' against 'unequal' foes being greeted by contemporaries with heightened enthusiasm and greater confidence in success. This ideological current of imperialism, together with Social Darwinian thought and the Victorian rediscovery of military chivalry combined to transform the relationship between war and society. Changing ideologies did not develop spontaneously, however, and this volume traces the ways in which new images were conveyed to the public through popular culture. The chapters cover media as diverse as music and ceremony, the music hall, juvenile literature, military art, open-air theatrical displays and RAF pageants. The contributors show how these media established a tradition that was to survive until the mid-twentieth century. This inter-disciplinary study will appeal to students and specialists interested in imperial history, literary and cultural studies and military history

" Watching War on the Twenty-First Century Stage is the first publication to analyse the ways in which UK theatre has represented, interrogated or contested images of war and terrorism as they are habitually presented in the dominant media. Drawing on theories of spectacle and a wide array of plays and productions-including plays from playwrights such as Caryl Churchill, Mark Ravenhill and Martin Crimp, as well as devised and dance-based theatre-Spectacles of Conflict is a richly provocative engagement with an issue that permeates contemporary culture and consciousness. Residents in wealthy nations such as the UK are invited-at a safe distance, from the comfort of our sofas or our desktops-to spectate, to gawp at, to indulge in images of violence and conflict. Finburgh asks how plays and performances have succeeded, or failed, in negotiating their own status as spectacle in order to make war as it is actually waged, more palpable, in all its devastating vastness. Among the many 21st-century plays and productions analysed are: Headlong Theatre Company's site-specific series of nineteen short plays Decade, Mark Ravenhill's play cycle Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat, Simon Stephens's Pornography, Lone Twin's Alice Bell, Howard Barker's The Dying of Today, Roy Williams' Days of Significance, Gregory Burke's Black Watch, David Hare's Stuff Happens, Martin Crimp's The City, Nicholas Kent and Richard Norton-Taylor's Justifying War: Scenes from the Hutton Enquiry, Jonathan Lichtenstein's Memory, and DV8's Can We Talk About This? The original and interdisciplinary interrogation offers new ways of analysing representations of war and gives coherence to a large and ever-expanding field by examining and evoking a broad spectrum of theatre and performance pieces, that includes national and fringe productions, text-based theatre and physical performance, and promenade, site-specific and conventional pieces. "A socialist worker raises the red flag. Adoring crowds greet Hitler and Mussolini. Uncle Sam orders Americans to enlist. In the first half of the twentieth century, these images and many more circulated by the millions on postcards that were designed to change minds and inspire actions. Whether produced by government propaganda bureaus, opportunistic publishers, aid organizations or resistance movements, postcards conveyed their messages with striking graphics, pithy slogans and biting caricatures -- and in a uniquely personal form. The more than 350 cards reproduced in full color in this book advocate for political causes and celebrate war efforts on all sides of the major conflicts of their time. The accompanying text shows how a ubiquitous form of communication served increasingly sophisticated campaigns in an age of propaganda, and highlights the postcards collected here as both priceless historical documents and masterworks of graphic design." -- Book jacket

"The central concerns of the volume are the multivalent aspects of art that respond to war. It begins by considering art conceived of and executed in response to the First World War on the centennial anniversary of that event. The volume goes on to examine art in the wake of the Holocaust and artistic responses to more recent conflict, such as the Vietnam War. The essays in this volume explore a variety of media--including paintings by Otto Dix and Gerhard Richter, Holocaust photography by Heimrad Bäcker, and sculpture by Emy Roeder, Gela Forster, and Renée Sintenis--to chart the complex relationship between art and war in both its documentary and analytical functions."--Page [4] of cover
