    "The European social sciences tend to absorb criticism of their approach and re-label it as a part of what the critique opposes; thus criticism of European social sciences by subaltern social sciences, their 'talking back,' has become a frequent line of reflection. The relabeling of the critique of the European approach as a critique from 'Southern' social sciences of 'Western' social sciences has in effect turned 'Southern' as well as 'Western' social sciences into competing contributors to the same 'globalizing' social sciences. Both are no longer arguing about the European approach to social sciences but about which social thought from which part of the globe should prevail. If the critique becomes a part of what it opposes, one might conclude that the European social sciences are adaptable and capable of learning. One might, however, also raise the question whether there is anything wrong with the criticism of the European social sciences, or, for that matter, whether there is anything wrong with the European social sciences themselves. The contributions in this book discuss these questions from different angles: They revisit the mainstream critique of the European social sciences, and they suggest new arguments criticizing social science theories that may be found as often in the 'Western' as in the 'Southern' discourse"--Page [4] of cover

    As the conception of and debates on regional powers have been led by political science, this paper aims to contribute to the discussion from an economics perspective. Based on the discussion of different concepts of economic power - such as those of Schumpeter, Perroux, Predöhl, or Kindleberger - concepts of technological leadership, and the global value chain approaches, the paper develops a research framework for the economics of regional powers. This framework is then tested using descriptive statistics as well as regressions analysis, with a focus on the four regional powers Brazil, China, India, and South Africa. As economic power is relational, the relationship of regional powers to other nations in the region is analyzed. According to the findings, only limited statements on the economics of regional powers are possible: a regional power can be described as an economy with a relatively large population and land area which plays a dominant role in trade within the region and in the regional governance. The regional power develops its technological capacities, and its businesses act regionally and globally with increasing strength. -- Brazil ; China ; economic geography ; economic leadership ; economic power ; growth ; India ; investment ; public goods ; regional powers ; regression analysis ; South Africa ; technological change ; value chain ; trade Während Konzeption und Debatte über regional powers maßgeblich von politikwissenschaftlicher Forschung geprägt sind, leistet das Working Paper einen Beitrag zur Theorie der regional powers aus wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Ausgehend von der Diskussion unterschiedlicher Konzepte wirtschaftlicher Macht (beispielsweise von Schumpeter, Perroux, Predöhl und Kindleberger), Konzepten zu technologischer Führerschaft und der Forschung über globale Wertschöpfungsketten wird ein Forschungsrahmen für die wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Analyse der regional powers entwickelt, der im Folgenden durch beschreibende Statistik und Regressionsanalyse an den Beispielländern Brasilien, China, Indien und Südafrika getestet wird. Da wirtschaftliche Macht ein relationales Konzept ist, wird die Beziehung der regional powers zu anderen Ländern der jeweiligen Region untersucht. Anhand der Er-gebnisse sind begrenzte Aussagen über die Ökonomie der regional powers möglich: Eine regional power kann demnach als eine Volkswirtschaft mit verhältnismäßig großer Bevölkerung und Landfläche beschrieben werden, die eine dominante Rolle im Handel der Region und der regionalen governance-Struktur einnimmt. Die regional power entwickelt ihre technologischen Fähigkeiten weiter und ihre Unternehmungen agieren mit zunehmender Stärke sowohl auf regionalem als auch auf globalem Niveau.

    Why is Chile following such a proactive FTA policy and at the same time promoting the benefits of these type of agreements to other Latin American countries? There is a pre-dominance of economic explanations to analyze why countries pursue an active FTA policy. Yet within an FTA policy, understood as an essential component of a country's foreign policy, strategic and ideational goals are also important. Without downgrading economic explanations, I argue in this article that Chile's proactive FTA policy can also be under-stood using variables from "traditional" international relations such as power, governance, and ideas. A framework based on such political-economic strategic issues and value-based ideas provides a better understanding of the country's motivations in implementing such a proactive FTA policy. -- FTAs ; status ; soft balancing ; economic dependence ; governance ; ideas ; Chile Was sind die Gründe für Chiles derartig aktive Freihandelspolitik und dafür, dass Chile die Vorteile dieser Art von Abkommen gleichzeitig auch anderen lateinamerikanischen Staaten anpreist? Zur Erklärung, warum Länder eine aktive Freihandelspolitik verfolgen, werden überwiegend ökonomische Gründe aufgeführt. Doch bei einer aktiven Freihandelspolitik, die als wichtiger Bestandteil der Außenpolitik angesehen wird, müssen auch strategische und ideelle Ziele Berücksichtigung finden. Ohne die ökonomischen Erklärungen abzuwerten, wird in diesem Beitrag die Auffassung vertreten, dass Chiles aktive Freihandelspolitik auch als Rückgriff auf "traditionelle" Variablen der internationalen Bezie-hungen wie Macht, Governance und Ideen verstanden werden kann. Eine Darstellung der politisch-ökonomischen Strategiefragen und der ideellen Aspekte lässt die Beweggründe dieses Landes für eine solch aktive Freihandelspolitik einfacher nachvollziehen.
