Dieser Band setzt sich mit diesen Fragen auseinander Starting in the 1960s, the concepts "North" and "South" became important indices for speaking about global relations, dependencies, and not least, inequalities. Yet when did we begin to speak of north and south? And what alternative interpretations did these terms elicit? This volume examines these issues

How children and children's literature helped build America's empireAmerica's empire was not made by adults alone. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, young people became essential to its creation. Through children's literature, authors instilled the idea of America's power and the importance of its global prominence. As kids eagerly read dime novels, series fiction, pulp magazines, and comic books that dramatized the virtues of empire, they helped entrench a growing belief in America's indispensability to the international order.Empires more generally require stories to justify their existence. Children's literature seeded among young people a conviction that their country's command of a continent (and later the world) was essential to global stability. This genre allowed ardent imperialists to obscure their aggressive agendas with a veneer of harmlessness or fun. The supposedly nonthreatening nature of the child and children's literature thereby helped to disguise dominion's unsavory nature. The modern era has been called both the "American Century" and the "Century of the Child." Brian Rouleau illustrates how those conceptualizations came together by depicting children in their influential role as the junior partners of US imperial enterprise.

The article argues that women's employment in the Middle East depends to some degree on the cultural traditions of female roles but to a much greater degree on the development policies of the single countries. It introduces a framework for the study of women's employment which is based on the gender and class divisions, the state policies and development strategies, and the organization of the world-economy. It shows that women's employment in the Middle East is low compared to other so-called peripheral or semi-peripheral regions due to the region's function within the world economy as an oil economy in which employment opportunities for women tend to be limited. How are we to comprehend, diagnose, and counter a system of racist subjugation so ordinary it has become utterly asymptomatic? Challenging the prevailing literary critical inclination toward what makes texts exceptional or distinctive, Genre and White Supremacy in the Postemancipation United States underscores the urgent importance of genre for tracking conventionality as it enters into, constitutes, and reproduces ordinary life. 0In the wake of emancipation's failed promise, two developments unfolded: white supremacy amassed new mechanisms and procedures for reproducing racial hierarchy; and black freedom developed new practices for collective expression and experimentation. This new racial ordinary came into being through new literary and cultural genres-including campus novels, the Ladies' Home Journal, Civil War elegies, and gospel sermons. Through the postemancipation interplay between aesthetic0conventions and social norms, genre became a major influence in how Americans understood their social and political affiliations, their citizenship, and their race.0Travis M. Foster traces this thick history through four decades following the Civil War, equipping us to understand ordinary practices of resistance more fully and to resist ordinary procedures of subjugation more effectively. In the process, he provides a model for how the study of popular genre can reinvigorate our methods for historicizing the everyday

This volume offers trenchant studies by renowned scholars who reassess the role of the social sciences in the construction and upkeep of the Pax Americana. The thematic image for this enterprise is the 'fiery hunt' for Ahab's whale, which focuses attention on the strange brew of mixed motives for American ventures abroad. The reach of Pax Americana exceeds its grasp, but this verdict requires deeper insight than simply flushing out cultural premises and conceptual limits. The volume's purpose is to understand the USA's 'fiery hunt,' and thereby to help to end it
