    In times when the role of science in society is more debated than ever in polarized, politicized and partial terms, what is the role for the human right to science and rights-based approaches? The right to science remains poorly understood and neglected in both national and global human rights processes. Beyond defending the freedom of scientific expression, upholding the right to science is arguably fundamental to resolving key sustainability challenges of our times from climate change and the biodiversity crisis to global health and pandemics. The global COVID-19 pandemic has revealed persistent global inequalities not least in terms of how the privatization of science and current intellectual property regimes hinder just and equitable responses to access science and its benefits. This prompts the need for a shift from single-issue approaches to comprehensive and systematic treatment of the right to science as a bundle of human rights across multiple arenas to counter fragmentation and silo-tendencies.

    Die Abhandlung zielt darauf, innerhalb von facettenreichen postkolonialen Diskursen valide Kritikpunkte, die speziell das Teilgebiet des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes betreffen, zu identifizieren und in den existierenden völkerrechtlichen und institutionellen Rahmen einzuordnen. Dies geschieht u. a. in Bezug auf die Nominierung und die Verwaltung von Weltkulturerbe im Rahmen der Welterbekonvention (1972), unter spezieller Beachtung der Partizipationsforderungen von unterschiedlichen Gemeinschaften. Auf diese Weise soll ein klareres Bild gewonnen werden, ob normative Schutzlücken und Umsetzungsdefizite – gegebenenfalls auch verdeckte postkoloniale Muster – existieren und, bejahendenfalls, welche Reformschritte seitens der UNESCO zu verzeichnen sind. Die Autorin, die selbst Inhaberin eines UNESCO-Lehrstuhls ist, verortet dabei Kulturerbe als identitätsprägend und vertritt eine Perspektive, welche das Bewusstsein für den Nexus zwischen Weltkulturerbe, kulturellen Menschenrechten und Nachhaltigkeit schärft.

Erzähltraditionen gibt es zudem auf der ganzen Welt. Das macht sie zum idealen Ausgangspunkt für gleichberechtigte Verständigung. Durch einen Vermittlungsansatz, der das gegenseitige Erzählen über Sprach- und kulturelle Barrieren hinweg ermöglicht, hat das Modellprojekt ERZÄHL MIR DEINE GESCHICHTE/N für die Teilhabe von Geflüchteten und zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement auf Grundlage der „Kinder- und Hausmärchen“ der Brüder Grimm dafür vielseitige didaktische und künstlerische Arbeitsmaterialien entwickelt. Die Publikation reflektiert das Projekt und kontextualisiert es in den Themenfeldern von Teilhabe, Bildungsvermittlung, World Heritage Education sowie kulturpolitischen Entwicklungen. The personal copies of ‘Children’s and Household Tales’ by the Brothers Grimm, which are kept in Kassel, are part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme and, thus, the globally recognised cultural memory. Moreover, there are storytelling traditions throughout the entire world, which makes them an ideal starting point for communication and understanding on an equal level. To this end, the pilot scheme ERZÄHL MIR DEINE GESCHICHTE/N (TELL ME YOUR STORY/-IES) has developed multifaceted teaching and artistic materials through a narrative approach which enables reciprocal storytelling that transcends language and cultural barriers. This publication presents that project and places it in the contexts of participation, education, World Heritage Education and cultural policy developments.
