    Verlagsinfo: Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Untersuchung steht Robert Müllers expressionistischer Roman "Tropen. Der Mythos der Reise" (1915), dessen Position im Schnittpunkt von exotistischen, ethnographischen und anthropologischen Diskursen nach der Jahrhundertwende bestimmt wird. Die literarischen Texte Müllers werden dabei auch mit seiner politischen Essayistik konfrontiert, und es stellt sich heraus, dass der Bruch dieses Autors mit imperialistischem Kriegsenthusiasmus und Sozialdarwinismus in seiner literarischen Produktion angelegt ist. Die Studie führt in eine Szenerie der Gewalt, in der die Repräsentanten der imperialistischen Expansion vor Ort im Zustand der ›Tropenneurasthenie‹ ihre zivilisierten Hemmungen ablegen. In Form einer umfassenden historischen Diskursanalyse wird das Panorama einer bevölkerungspolitischen Problematisierung von Rassenmischung in den deutschen Kolonien entfaltet. Müllers exotistische Hybridisierungsphantasien wirken vor diesem Hintergrund als Provokation, denn die in seinem Tropen-Roman geschilderten Exzesse stellen die philanthropische Rechtfertigung des kolonialen Projekts und dessen Anspruch auf Rationalität in Frage. Als aktivistischer Kulturrevolutionär artikuliert Müller auch in der Nachkriegszeit koloniale Phantasien, die als Visionen einer supranationalen Weltordnung lesbar werden, in der Hybridität das imperiale Projekt unterläuft. Thomas Schwarz lehrt deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der University of Pune, Indien.
