    In Greek and Latin, tropes (τρόποι) are generally defined as variations from a linguistic and stylistic norm (κυριολογία), either for stylistic purposes or for necessity. In this sense, they lie somewhere between a purely grammatical and a more rhetorical nature, since they may involve alterations of morphology, the semantic sphere of words, or syntactic peculiarities aimed at achieving a special expressive effect. Because of their ambiguous nature, tropes are in close proximity to what are commonly known as rhetorical figures (σχήματα). From the Ancient times all the way to the Byzantine era, Greek grammarians wrote several treatises on tropes (περὶ τρόπων). This book offers a critical edition of the extant texts on tropes transmitted by mediaeval codices, i.e. the ones attributed to grammarians such as Concordius, Georgius Choeroboscus, and the so-called 'Trypho I', 'Trypho II', 'Trypho III', 'Anonymus III' and 'Anonymus IV'. Each text is accompanied by an Italian translation. In the Introduction, besides a generic overview on the concept of trope (its genesis, its meaning(s), its development throughout centuries), an analysis of the contents and of the reciprocal relations between all these treatises is provided

    In der Moderne schließen sich Beschleunigung und Stillstand nicht aus, sondern müssen in ihrer gegenseitigen Komplementarität gedacht werden. Modernisierungsprozesse bringen vielfältige Beschleunigungserfahrungen mit sich. So ist die Zwischenkriegszeit geprägt durch das Aufkommen der Schicht der Angestellten, ihrer Kultur und dem rasenden Leben in den Großstädten wie auch von industriellen Rationalisierungsbestrebungen, Zuständen gefühlter Entfremdung und ökonomischen Rezessionen. Mit Blick auf die darin stattfindenden Erfahrungen zeigt sich, dass dort, wo sich Ereignisse beschleunigen oder eine technologische Dynamik entfacht wird, immer auch Momente der Stauung, der Überhitzung oder der Zerstörung lauern. Anhand solcher Phänomene lässt sich beobachten, wie sich die beiden Zustände, der der Beschleunigung und der des Stillstands, nicht etwa ausschließen, sondern in ihrer sich gegenseitig beeinflussenden Komplementarität gedacht werden müssen. Das Ergebnis ist das nur scheinbar paradoxe Phänomen des rasenden Stillstandes, das sich in Reportagen über das Berliner Sechstagerennen, Kafkas Romanen und Kurzgeschichten, Bernhard Kellermanns Tunnel-Roman, der Angestelltenliteratur von Gabriele Tergit oder Martin Kessel und vielen weiteren Texten offenbart.

    Two factors have elevated recent academic and policy interest in tropical deforestation: first, the realization that it is a major contributor to climate change; and second, a revolution in satellite-based measurement that has revealed that it is proceeding at a rapid rate. We begin by reviewing the methodological advances that have enabled measurement of forest loss at a fine spatial resolution across the globe. We then develop a simple benchmark model of deforestation based on classic models of natural resource extraction. Extending this approach to incorporate features that characterize deforestation in developing countries---pressure for land use change, significant local and global externalities, weak property rights, and political economy constraints---provides us with a framework for reviewing the fast-growing empirical literature on the economics of deforestation in the tropics. This combination of theory and empirics provides insights not only into the economic drivers and impacts of tropical deforestation but also into policies that may affect its progression. We conclude by identifying areas where more work is needed in this important body of research
