    This volume presents for the first time a study of the interface between exile and travel within the context of exile from Nazi Germany. The nineteen essays share the overarching aim to compare the tropes of travel and exile as generators of a critical discourse and as central categories within German exile, in particular literature, music and film. The essays are guided by powerful questions: How does travel compare to exile, and how much overlap is there between these two categories? How do exiles travel, as practitioners of displacement?     "In Moving Home, Sandra Gunning examines nineteenth-century African diasporic travel writing to expand and complicate understandings of the Black Atlantic. Gunning draws on the writing of missionaries, abolitionists, entrepreneurs, and explorers whose work challenges the assumptions that travel writing is primarily associated with leisure or scientific research. For instance, Yoruba ex-slave turned Anglican bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther played a role in the Christianization of colonial Nigeria. Sarah Forbes Bonetta, a formerly enslaved girl gifted to Queen Victoria, traveled the African colonies as the wife of a prominent colonial figure and at the protection of her benefactress. Alongside Nancy Gardiner Prince, Martin R. Delany, Robert Campbell, and others, these writers used their mobility as African diasporic and colonial subjects to explore the Atlantic world and beyond while they negotiated the complex intersections between nation and empire. Rather than categorizing them as merely precursors of Pan-Africanist traditions, Gunning traces their successes and frustrations to capture a sense of the historical and geographical specificities that shaped their careers"--

    Nur gut zwei Wochen dauerte Theodor Fontanes Reise in die emotionsbesetzten Geschichtslandschaften „jenseit des Tweed“. Dennoch prägt sein Reisebuch bis heute die kulturelle Wahrnehmung Schottlands bei deutschen Lesern. Ausgehend von britischen Schottlandreisen seit Defoe und Samuel Johnson, die das Land überhaupt erst zu einem literarischen Gegenstand machten, und im Kontext deutscher Reiseberichte von Emilie von Berlepsch und Johanna Schopenhauer bis Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Carl Gustav Carus und anderen diskutiert diese Studie Theodor Fontanes in mancher Hinsicht höchst eigenwillige Gestaltung seiner Reise, die er die poetischste nennt, die er je gemacht habe. Die Reise verwirklicht einen langgehegten Traum und ist mit hohen Erwartungen an das Land verbunden, in dem „der Wunderbaum der Romantik seine schönsten und vor Allem seine gesundesten Blüthen trieb“. Fontanes Reisebuch, diese „Erzählungen eines letzten Romantikers“, geraten dabei in einen produktiven Widerspruch zu seinem eigenen Programm eines poetischen Realismus.
