    It is generally agreed that knowledge plays an important role in translation and interpreting and that it should therefore be of central concern to translation and interpreting studies. However, there is no general agreement about what is actually meant by the term 'knowledge' in this context, nor about in exactly what ways it is relevant. Also, present-day translation and interpreting studies offer only a limited amount of research specifically dedicated to knowledge systematization and other knowledge-related issues. This book is one of the first to systematically and exclusively address the question of knowledge in translation and interpreting. It is a collection of papers by leading scholars both from the field of translation and interpreting and from adjacent fields where knowledge also plays an important role, such as linguistics and computer science. The experts present a wide variety of conceptions of knowledge and a number of different approaches to the study of knowledge in translation and interpreting: some of them draw on concepts such as scenes and frames, mental spaces and semantic networks, some discuss knowledge systems from an ontological point of view, and some present more general concepts of knowledge in translation and interpreting. Along the same lines, some of the contributors deal mainly with theoretical and conceptual aspects, others focus on methodological issues, and again others report on empirical studies. What brings them together, however, is their common focus on the interface between knowledge and translation/interpreting, and their main achievement is that, by joining forces, they manage to present to their readers a state-of-the-art report which offers both a clearer delimitation of the concept of knowledge and a better understanding of its role in translation and interpreting

    Publisher description: In the late Qing period, from the Opium War to the 1911 revolution, China absorbed the initial impact of Western arms, manufactures, science and culture, in that order. This volume of essays deals with the reception of Western literature, on the evidence of translations made. Having to overcome Chinese assumptions of cultural superiority, the perception that the West had a literature worth notice grew only gradually. It was not until the very end of the 19th century that a translation of a Western novel (La dame aux camélias) achieved popular acclaim. But this opened the floodgates: in the first decade of the 20th century, more translated fiction was published than original fiction. The core essays in this collection deal with aspects of this influx according to division of territory. Some take key works (e.g. Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin Byrons "The Isles of Greece"), some sample genres (science fiction, detective fiction, fables, political novels), the common attention being to the adjustments made by translators to suit the prevailing aesthetic, cultural and social norms, and/or the current needs and preoccupations of the receiving public. A broad overview of translation activities is given in the introduction. To present the subject in its true guise, that of a major cultural shift, supporting papers are included to fill in the background and to describe some of the effects of this foreign invasion on native literature. A rounded picture emerges that will be intelligible to readers who have no specialized knowledge of China

    Publisher description: In the late Qing period, from the Opium War to the 1911 revolution, China absorbed the initial impact of Western arms, manufactures, science and culture, in that order. This volume of essays deals with the reception of Western literature, on the evidence of translations made. Having to overcome Chinese assumptions of cultural superiority, the perception that the West had a literature worth notice grew only gradually. It was not until the very end of the 19th century that a translation of a Western novel (La dame aux camélias) achieved popular acclaim. But this opened the floodgates: in the first decade of the 20th century, more translated fiction was published than original fiction. The core essays in this collection deal with aspects of this influx according to division of territory. Some take key works (e.g. Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin Byrons "The Isles of Greece"), some sample genres (science fiction, detective fiction, fables, political novels), the common attention being to the adjustments made by translators to suit the prevailing aesthetic, cultural and social norms, and/or the current needs and preoccupations of the receiving public. A broad overview of translation activities is given in the introduction. To present the subject in its true guise, that of a major cultural shift, supporting papers are included to fill in the background and to describe some of the effects of this foreign invasion on native literature. A rounded picture emerges that will be intelligible to readers who have no specialized knowledge of China.

    Der Band lässt Einblicke in die kontrastive und multilinguale Lexikographie unterschiedlicher Sprachen gewinnen. Es wird den Fragen nachgegangen, welche zwei- und mehrsprachige Wörterbücher vorliegen und auf welchen linguistischen Grundlagen sie basieren, welche Rolle die Valenz sowie die neuen Erkenntnisse der Konstruktionsgrammatik bei der lexikographischen Beschreibung spielen, welchen Einfluss die Online- bzw. elektronische Darbietung der Daten auf die Entwicklung der Makro- und Mikrostruktur dieser Wörterbücher ausübt, und welche Tendenzen generell auszumachen sind. Im Vordergrund steht außerdem der Wörterbuchbenutzer im Allgemeinen, aber auch die Perspektive des Fremdsprachenlerners. Hinzu kommen lernerorientierte und sprachbedingte Fragen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird die Beantwortung der Fragen angestrebt, ob die Wörterbücher, die sich auf dem Markt befinden (inkl. online-Wörterbücher), wirklich diejenigen sind, die gebraucht werden und welche Verbesserungen möglicherweise vorzunehmen sind.Der Band gibt einen Überblick über die aktuelle kontrastive Lexikographie und fasst zusammen, welche Arbeitsschritte in diesem Bereich noch ausstehen und wie ihre Zukunft aussieht

Reparaturen sind produktive Wiedergutmachungs- und Anpassungsmechanismen, die linguistische Phänomene als Reflex der Kompensation für derivationelle oder interpretative Schäden erklären Grammatical structures connect systems of thought and articulation, the conditions of which hardly seem to fit each other. Repairs are productive mechanisms that solve translation problems between modules or levels by adapting derivations or representations to requirements that have to be met unconditionally. Compensating for derivational and interpretive defects, repairs determine core properties of natural language grammars and their interfaces

    Der Band lässt Einblicke in die kontrastive und multilinguale Lexikographie unterschiedlicher Sprachen gewinnen. Es wird den Fragen nachgegangen, welche zwei- und mehrsprachige Wörterbücher vorliegen und auf welchen linguistischen Grundlagen sie basieren, welche Rolle die Valenz sowie die neuen Erkenntnisse der Konstruktionsgrammatik bei der lexikographischen Beschreibung spielen, welchen Einfluss die Online- bzw. elektronische Darbietung der Daten auf die Entwicklung der Makro- und Mikrostruktur dieser Wörterbücher ausübt, und welche Tendenzen generell auszumachen sind. Im Vordergrund steht außerdem der Wörterbuchbenutzer im Allgemeinen, aber auch die Perspektive des Fremdsprachenlerners. Hinzu kommen lernerorientierte und sprachbedingte Fragen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird die Beantwortung der Fragen angestrebt, ob die Wörterbücher, die sich auf dem Markt befinden (inkl. online-Wörterbücher), wirklich diejenigen sind, die gebraucht werden und welche Verbesserungen möglicherweise vorzunehmen sind.Der Band gibt einen Überblick über die aktuelle kontrastive Lexikographie und fasst zusammen, welche Arbeitsschritte in diesem Bereich noch ausstehen und wie ihre Zukunft aussieht
