    In dem Artikel wird die in letzter Zeit vermehrt diskutierte Kategorie der "Ambiguitätstoleranz" als ein wichtiger Aspekt der Theorie und Praxis des religiösen Lernens erläutert. Dabei wird zunächst gezeigt, dass die Theorie des religiösen Lernens eine Form von Hermeneutik ist: Es geht dabei um das Verstehen des Selbst, um das Verstehen von Religion und das Verstehen religiöser Bildung und Entwicklung. Die religionsbezogene Hermeneutik wird religiöse Gegenstände und Menschen als grundsätzlich mehrdeutig ("ambiguitär") zeigen und so zu Toleranz gegenüber der Vielfalt und inneren Mehrdeutigkeit des Religiösen befähigen. Die Mehrdeutigkeit bezieht sich dabei auch auf den Kern des eigenen Glaubens, im Falle des Christentums auf die Aussagen über Gott, den Vater Jesu Christi und die Auferstehung der Toten. In this article the category "tolerance of ambiguity" ("Ambiguitätstoleranz") is explained and discussed as an important aspect of religious learning in theory and practice. To show, this the article argues that the theory of religious learning is a form of hermeneutics which includes the understanding of self, of religion, and of religious development. Religious hermeneutics identify religious topics and people as fundamentally ambiguous. In this way, religious hermeneutics enable tolerance towards religious pluralism and ambiguity. This ambiguity can also be found at the very center of Christian faith in the statements about God, the Father of Jesus Christ, and the resurrection of the dead.

    We highlight a new factor behind integration: tolerance in the immigrants' background culture. We hypothesize that it is easier to partake of economic, civic-political, and social life in a new country for a person stemming from a culture that embodies tolerance towards people who are different. We test this by applying the epidemiological method, using a tolerance index based on two indicators from the World Values Survey - the share that thinks it important to teach children tolerance and the share that considers homosexuality justified - as our main independent variable. Our outcomes are indices of individual-level economic, civic-political, and cultural integration outcomes for immigrants of the second generation with data from the European Social Survey. The results indicate that tolerance in the background culture is a robust predictor of integration among children of immigrants in European societies.
