In 1956, Ava Lark rents a house with her twelve-year-old son, Lewis, in a desirable Boston suburb. Ava is beautiful, divorced, Jewish, and a working mom. She finds her neighbors less than welcoming. Lewis yearns for his absent father, befriending the only other fatherless kids: Jimmy and Rose. One afternoon, Jimmy goes missing. The neighborhood?in the throes of Cold War paranoia?seizes the opportunity to further ostracize Ava and her son. Years later, when Lewis and Rose reunite to untangle the final pieces of the tragic puzzle, they must decide: Should you tell the truth even if it hurts those you love, or should some secrets remain buried?

Suburban space has traditionally been understood as a formless remnant of physical city expansion, without a dynamic or logic of its own. Suburban Urbanities challenges this view by defining the suburb as a temporally evolving feature of urban growth. Anchored in the architectural research discipline of space syntax, this book offers a comprehensive understanding of urban change, touching on the history of the suburb as well as its current development challenges, with a particular focus on suburban centres. Studies of the high street as a centre for social, economic and cultural exchange provide evidence for its critical role in sustaining local centres over time. Contributors from the architecture, urban design, geography, history and anthropology disciplines examine cases spanning Europe and around the Mediterranean. By linking large-scale city mapping, urban design scale expositions of high street activity and local-scale ethnographies, the book underscores the need to consider suburban space on its own terms as a specific and complex field of social practice.

The record of French cinema's many forays into the Paris suburbs is far more than a prehistory of the 'film de banlieue'. Decades before the emergence--around 1995--of a self-styled 'hood' film in France, filmmakers looked beyond the gates of the City of Light for inspiration and content. In the jumble of spaces surrounding Paris they found an inexhaustible reservoir of forms, landscapes and social types in which to anchor their fictions. Idyllic or menacing, wide-open or claustrophobic, these locales served divergent ideological and aesthetic programmes. From the bourgeois villas and vacant lots of Louis Feuillade's serials of the 1910s and the bucolic watering holes of 1930s poetic realism to the vast post-war housing estates showcased by Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Tati and Maurice Pialat, the gritty noir décors of Jean-Pierre Melville or the sleek, post-modern new towns shot by Éric Rohmer, the Paris suburbs came to form a key site in teh national imaginary. For the first time in English, the fifteen contributors to this volume address key aspects of this long screen history, which intersects with themes central to French cultural modernity, including class conflict, leisure, boredom, alienation and anti-authoritarianism. Diverse in focus and expansive in scope, Screening the Paris suburbs will interest students and scholars of French film, cultural studies and urban/suburban studies--back cover

The work of photographer and Rhode Island School of Design professor Steven B. Smith (born 1963) chronicles the transition of the Western landscape into suburbia. 'Steven B. Smith: Your Mountain is Waiting' documents the accelerating suburbanization of Smith's native Utah. Peeling back the layers of westward expansion with equal parts subtlety and irony, Smith captures the new McMansions springing up against the rocky, rust-red mountains and deep blue skies of the West. Smith is equally attentive to the cast of characters that fill these new landscapes--the people that build them, and the people that live in them

"Loosely based on the medieval bestiary, The Rapture Index examines the relationship between animals, humans, and storytelling. Harnessing the bestiary's combination of religious parable, encyclopedia, and art, Molly Reid journeys deep into suburbia to reveal characters struggling to navigate desire and responsibility: the desire to indulge their baser instincts while still fulfilling the expectations of society and family. Filled with moments of curiosity, misunderstanding, fervor, and heart, these stories offer a new twist on familiar landscapes as they explore what happens in the places where the wilderness has been tamed when we try to deny our own animal nature"-- Happy you're here -- Bestiary I: the neighbor's bees -- The permutations of A -- Bestiary II: suburban fox -- Dog story -- Bestiary III: attic raccoon -- The first location -- Anatomy is destiny -- Bestiary IV: Steller's jay -- Apocalypso -- Bestiary V: chimney swifts -- 3d printing: a love story -- Summer people -- Bestiary VI: one hamster -- Adventures in wildlife -- Fall from grace -- All men -- The rapture index -- Bestiary VII: laundromat bobcat -- Come closer -- Bestiary VIII: the alligators.

From the perspective of those who live in Herot Hall, the suburb is a paradise. Picket fences divide buildings--high and gabled--and the community is entirely self-sustaining. Each house has its own fireplace, each fireplace is fitted with a container of lighter fluid, and outside--in lawns and on playgrounds--wildflowers seed themselves in neat rows. But for those who live surreptitiously along Herot Hall's periphery, the subdivision is a fortress guarded by an intense network of gates, surveillance cameras, and motion-activated lights. For Willa, the wife of Roger Herot (heir of Herot Hall), life moves at a charmingly slow pace. She flits between mommy groups, playdates, cocktail hour, and dinner parties, always with her son, Dylan, in tow. Meanwhile, in a cave in the mountains just beyond the limits of Herot Hall lives Gren, short for Grendel, as well as his mother, Dana, a former soldier who gave birth as if by chance. Dana didn't want Gren, didn't plan Gren, and doesn't know how she got Gren, but when she returned from war, there he was. When Gren, unaware of the borders erected to keep him at bay, ventures into Herot Hall and runs off with Dylan, Dana's and Willa's worlds collide.

Demolition expert Ned lives with his wife Joy in a newly built house in a new estate on the edge of the English countryside. Their relationship is under strain and, after Ned confides in his neighbour Dale, Dale has an affair with Joy. At the same time, Ned is tormented by the mysterious disappearance of various prized possessions from his home, from gold cufflinks to a tandem bicycle. But while Dale and Joy's plan to run away together is never realised, Ned, haunted by surreal delusions, harbours murderous feelings towards his wife.
