"Can other people notice our affects more easily than we do? In Spaces of Feeling, Marta Figlerowicz examines modernist novels and poems that treat this possibility as electrifying, but also deeply disturbing. Their characters and lyric speakers are undone, Figlerowicz posits, by the realization that they depend on others to solve their inward affective conundrums...and that, to these other people, their feelings often do not seem mysterious at all. Spaces of Feeling features close readings of works by Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, John Ashbery, Ralph Ellison, Marcel Proust, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, and Wallace Stevens. Figlerowicz points out that these poets and novelists often place their protagonists in domestic spaces...such as bedrooms, living rooms, and basements...in which their cognitive dependence on other characters inhabiting these spaces becomes clear. Figlerowicz highlights the diversity of aesthetic and sociopolitical contexts in which these affective dependencies become central to these authors' representations of selfhood. By setting these novels and poems in conversation with the work of contemporary theorists, she illuminates pressing and unanswered questions about subjectivity"...

Jahrhunderts versucht, die Scherben moderner Subjektivität aufzusammeln Who am I? Every writing in response to this question revolves around itself, even the literary self-exploration of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Karl Philipp Moritz, and W.G. Sebald. Their (auto) biographical texts explore with radical narrative the contradictions of modern subjectivity. Martina Läubli directs our attention to the interconnection of thought and body experience, and of body and masculinity. She shows shows how the Enlightenment philosophers Rousseau and Moritz criticize the philosophical separation of body and mind in literary form, and how Sebald attempted to pick up the pieces of modern subjectivity at the end of the violent 20th Century

What is it that makes language powerful? This book uses the psychoanalytic concepts of narcissism and libidinal investment to explain how rhetoric compels us and how it can effect change. The works of Joseph Conrad, James Baldwin, Michael Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Arthur Miller, D.H. Lawrence, Ben Jonson, George Orwell, and others are the basis of this thoughtful exploration of the relationship between language and subject. Bringing together ideas from Freudian, post- Freudian, Lacanian, and post-structuralist schools, Alcorn investigates the power of the text that underlies the reader response approach to literature in a strikingly new way. He shows how the production of literary texts begins and ends with narcissistic self-love, and also shows how the reader's interest in these texts is directed by libidinal investment. Psychoanalysts, psychologists, and lovers of literature will enjoy Alcorn's diverse and far-reaching insights into classic and contemporary writers and thinkers.

Challenging the tidy links among authorial position, narrative perspective, and fictional content, Stephen Hong Sohn argues that Asian American authors have never been limited to writing about Asian American characters or contexts. 'Racial Asymmetries' specifically examines the importance of first person narration in Asian American fiction published in the postrace era, focusing on those cultural productions in which the author's ethnoracial makeup does not directly overlap with that of the storytelling perspective.

What happens if we read nineteenth-century and Victorian texts not for the autonomous liberal subject, but for singularity - for what is partial, contingent, and in relation, rather than what is merely 'alone'? 'Feminine Singularity' offers a powerful feminist theory of the subject - and shows us paths to thinking subjectivity, race, and gender anew in literature and in our wider social world. Through fresh, sophisticated readings of Lewis Carroll, Christina Rossetti, Charles Baudelaire, and Wilkie Collins in conversation with psychoanalysis, Black feminist and queer-of-colour theory, and continental philosophy, Ronjaunee Chatterjee uncovers a lexicon of feminine singularity that manifests across poetry and prose through likeness and minimal difference, rather than individuality and identity.

Eskin deals with the complex interface between literature and life through the prism of the lives and works of three poets: the German-Jewish poet and Holocaust survivor, Paul Celan; the Leningrad native, U.S. poet laureate, and Nobel Prize winner, Joseph Brodsky; and Germany's premier contemporary poet, Durs Grünbein. Focussing on their poetic dialogues with such interlocutors as Shakespeare, Seneca, and Byron, respectively, the author offers readings of Celan's, Brodsky's, and Grünbein's lives and works, and discloses the ways in which poetry articulates and remains faithful to the manifold 'truths' determining human existence.

Kelli D. Zaytoun draws on Gloria Anzaldúa's thought to present a radically inclusive and expansive approach to selfhood, creativity, scholarship, healing, coalition-building, and activism. Zaytoun focuses on Anzaldúa's naguala/shapeshifter, a concept of nagualismo. This groundbreaking theory of subjectivity details a dynamic relationship between 'inner work' and 'public acts' that strengthens individuals' roles in social and transformative justice work. Zaytoun's detailed emphasis on la naguala, and Nahua metaphysics specifically, brings much needed attention to Anzaldúa's long-overlooked contribution to the study of subjectivity. The result is a women and queer of color, feminist-focused work aimed at scholars in many disciplines and intended to overcome barriers separating the academy from everyday life and community.

'Love, Subjectivity, and Truth' interprets Marcel Proust's masterpiece as an inquiry into love and the meaning of life, especially the question of whether love can be trusted or ought to be transcended. Drawing upon both the existential tradition and the ancient arguments for skepticism, it displays and evaluates what 'In Search of Lost Time' can show us about how to navigate our emotional lives.

"This book proposes that Ballard's novels extrapolate the formation of a posthuman subjectivity that is centered around an affirmative understanding of what a human body can do. This new subjectivity transforms constraints and prescribed desires into creative openings in a hyper-mediated control society that conditions docile bodies through technology and consumerism. Set in surrealist predicaments in postwar affluent Western societies, Ballard's novels reminds us of the fragile veneer of order in the familiar every day. In these moments of crisis, complacent characters are compelled to undergo a process of defamiliarisation and transformation of their understanding of the self and the body. The ability to form new relationships with the unfamiliar is imperative to survival in a hostile environment. Ballard delineates both the possibilities and obstacles of forming these relationships. In particular, the author attributes the failure to do so to the irreconcilable contradictions of late capitalism"--...
