Abstract: Existential Scepticism as a frame of orientation serves to elucidate the sociological practice reflectively: Sociology, in any case 'interpretative' sociology, is an attitude of consciousness which results from the claim on the necessary methodological distance to the general social practice. This attitude is described as methodical scepticism. The sceptical distance to practical involvement is used to uncover and analyse those aspects of social reality which are not accessible to everyday knowledge. A systematical foundation of this sociological attitude requires a 'mathesis universalis' which provides mundane-phenomenology with a controlled abstract description of the universal structures of the Life-World. But this is to be taken only as a modell of cognitive typification. Hence it has to be founded in turn on an existential-ontological base. Consciousness, from an existential point of view, cannot be thematized because it is pure original transcendence that cannot be founded it
