Explores the meaning[s] of music, the most intricate and significant language invented by our culture. From Daniel Albright, author of Musicking Shakespeare and Berlioz's Semi-Operas, comes a collection of essays on music and on dance, probing the problems of articulating the meaning[s] of music; the larger question of how music and language interact; how text-setting highlights certain areas of meter, theme, or ironic undertone, and leaves others in darkness; how a musical composition can behave as a critique of a previous composition; and how one might rehabilitate certain underappreciated or much-scorned figures, such as Meyerbeer, by showing that the very terms of invective used against them can be seen, from another angle, as an indication of what is exciting in their work. Albright shows that music history has an aesthetic of its own, and how music history interacts with intellectual history (from Rousseau to Paul de Man). By abutting music against literature and painting, and by juxtaposing the musics of different centuries, Albright frames a particular work, isolating what is arresting and important in it. The essays range widely, but they rarely stray far from opera, for the opera house is the venue where the performances speak the most intricate and significant language invented by our culture -- a language that speaks in music, words, pictures, and light. Daniel Albright teaches courses in the English, ComparativeLiterature, and Music departments at Harvard University.

"A Poetics of Global Solidarity traces the transformations of the engaged tradition of modern and contemporary American poetry and its imagination of a collective subject position rooted in a vision of global solidarity. The presence or absence of social and political movements has crucially shaped the imagination of writers who see poetry as a form of cultural practice with the potential of sparking political activism. The trajectory of this book is provided by the various social and political movements in whose context politically committed poets and lyricists imagined global poetic subjectivities beyond the ideologies that maintain the exclusionary mechanisms of the modern world-system. A Poetics of Global Solidarity offers readings of the poetry of the Great Depression, the Harlem Renaissance, post-World War II political poetry, the Beats, and contemporary poetry by writers such as Amiri Baraka and Mark Nowak. Broadening the poetic archive, the book includes discussions of song lyrics ranging from those of IWW songwriter Joe Hill to contemporary Rap lyricists and hardcore punk bands, all of which have contributed to the creation of a poetics of global solidarity in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries"-- "A Poetics of Global Solidarity establishes an engaged tradition of American poetry. Discussing a wide range of poems and song lyrics from the 1910s to contemporary poetic expression, the book shows how poets and lyricists imagine a vision of global solidarity in the context of particular social, political, and literary movements"--

"Rabindranath Tagore composed over 2000 songs that are revered and sung by Bengalis everywhere. However, they remain mostly unknown to listeners from other communities. This book brings the Nobel Laureate's unique music - Rabindrasangit - to a global audience, with a lucid introduction by Ananda Lal as well as selected songs in international transcription and English translation. It includes an essay written originally in Bengali by the celebrated filmmaker Satyajit Ray, himself a Tagore student and music composer. Ray presents his thoughts on Rabindrasangit, its nuances, music, history, and usage. Lal has also translated this essay into English for the first time. The book also presents for the first time faithful staff notations of all 41 songs in three of Tagore's major plays - Rakta-karavi, Tapati, and Arup Ratan - providing a thematic unity to the music section. This volume will be of interest to Tagore and Ray enthusiasts and specialists, musicologists, and students of music, theatre, literature, performance studies, and cultural studies. It will appeal not only to scholars but to general readers wanting to know more about Tagore's songs, as well as directors, arrangers, composers, and singers who may wish to perform or interpret the songs transcribed"--...

"Translating for Singing discusses the art and craft of translating singable lyrics, a topic of interest in a wide range of fields, including translation, music, creative writing, cultural studies, performance studies, and semiotics. Previously, such translation has most often been discussed by music critics, many of whom had neither training nor experience in this area. Written by two internationally known translators, the book focusses mainly on practical techniques for creating translations meant to be sung to pre-existing music, with suggested solutions to such linguistic problems as those associated with rhythm, syllable count, vocal burden, rhyme, repetition and sound. Translation theory and translations of lyrics for other purposes, such as surtitles, are also covered. The book can serve as a primary text in courses on translating lyrics and as a reference and supplementary text for other courses and for professionals in the fields mentioned. Beyond academia, the book is of interest to professional translators and to librettists, singers, conductors, stage directors, and audience members"...

"krinein" = unterscheiden. - Peter Petersen in: Die Musikforschung, 1/2016 The monograph maps new territory [...] - Nassim W. Balestrini in: Amerikastudien/American Studies, 1/2015
