In this volume of SSLP the contributions of Dutch scholars working in the field of Slavic literature and culture to the 14th International Congress of Slavists (Ohrid, Macedonia, September 10–16, 2008) are brought together. All of them except one (on the Polish poet Cyprian Norwid’s story Stigma ), deal with Russian literature from the end of the 18th century up to recent years. A variety of topics is treated, such as the feminization of Russian literature, the reflection of poetry in prose, anthropological and religious dimensions of literature, the specifics of theme and of plot, Russian modernism and postmodernism, and the status of language, from different methodological angles: gender studies, structural analysis, philosophical-contextual, postcolonial. Works of such Russian authors as Ippolit Bogdanovich, Ivan Turgenev, Pavel Mel’nikov-Pecherskii, Ignatii Potapenko, Iurii Trifonov, Timur Kibirov and Viktor Pelevin are discussed in detail. This volume is of interest for a scholarly audience interested in Russian literature of the last 250 years

Czesław Miłosz is at times called an American poet. This means one thing in Poland, and something else in the United States. To Polish readers, this description is mainly related to the moment of his departure from Europe to take up employment at the University of California in Berkeley, and his settlement for many years in California, where his new poems and essays were written. Miłosz is to them an American poet, in a biographical sense, from the time he started living at Grizzly Peak until his return to Krakow, and in a symbolic sense, for as long as he cooperated with the publishing market, participated in literary life, and was an ambassador of Polish literature across the ocean. He is an American poet to the extent that his work was influenced by the thought and work of those cultural circles.

This book shows the literary legacy of Bolesław Leśmian, the great Polish writer, as engaged in a dialogue with the tradition, and forged on the crossroads of literatures, and epochs. Exploring American, French and Russian contexts (Poe’s writing, Baudelaire’s oeuvre, Balmont’s texts, the symbolist style, the bylinna tradition), highlighting the correspondences between Leśmian and the romantics (Pushkin, Gogol) as well as the modernists (Jesienin, Gorodetsky) and connecting his work to Ukrainian culture through the evocation of old Slavic folklore, the book showcases Leśmian’s work as an example of interliterary and inter-cultural transfer of aesthetics, styles, genres and motifs. A crucial outcome of this research is the codifying of a contextual analysis as a method of comparative studies.

In Slavic studies, aging and old age have thus far been only marginal concerns. This volume brings together the scattered research that has been done up to now on aging as represented and narrated in Slavic literatures. The essays investigate Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Slovak, Slovene and Ukrainian representations of age/aging in various literary genres and epochs and analyze age as a powerful marker of difference and as constitutive of social relations and personal identity
