Walking through Elysium stresses the subtle and intricate ways writers across time and space wove Vergil’s underworld in Aeneid 6 into their works. These allusions operate on many levels, from the literary and political to the religious and spiritual. Aeneid 6 reshaped prior philosophical, religious, and poetic traditions of underworld descents, while offering a universalizing account of the spiritual that could accommodate prior as well as emerging religious and philosophical systems. Vergil’s underworld became an archetype, a model flexible enough to be employed across genres, and periods, and among differing cultural and religious contexts. The essays in this volume speak to Vergil’s incorporation of and influence on literary representations of underworlds, souls, afterlives, prophecies, journeys, and spaces, from sacred and profane to wild and civilized, tracing the impact of Vergil’s underworld on authors such as Ovid, Seneca, Statius, Augustine, and Shelley, from Pagan and Christian traditions through Romantic and Spiritualist readings. Walking through Elysium asserts the deep and lasting influence of Vergil’s underworld from the moment of its publication to the present day

Seneca’s developed metaphors draw on what is known to describe the unknown. They put hard ethical in highly accessible, and often quite entertaining, terms. The present book provides a functional description of Seneca’s dialectical relation between metaphorical language and philosophy. It shows how Stoic philosophy finds a new means of expression in Seneca’s highly elaborated rhetorical discourse, and how this relates to the social and cultural demands of Neronian culture. Metaphors are purposely utilized to work "collectively" rather than by category or type and that, therefore, the analysis of what metaphors do when Seneca chooses to combine them in clusters, demonstrates the existence of a "metanarrative of rhetoric". This approach is fundamentally innovative and has the advantage of gauging the functioning of Senecan style as a whole, rather than focusing on single features of its rhetorical functioning. The main target is to show how philosophical preaching materially contributes to the healing of human soul because it shapes the individual’s cognitive faculty in a way that is physical and not simply figurative. The stylus and the scalpel blend in their functions. This kind of therapy is not just the simulacrum of a more "real" one, it is in itself medical in nature

From the last years of the republic to the late imperial period, Latin declamation as a rhetorical exercise formed a significant part of school education, and in the form of public oration, was a distinctive element of Roman society as a whole. Having been neglected by researchers for a long time, declamation has in recent decades increasingly become the focus of philological, historical and legal studies. The present volume offers an overview of the development and social significance of declamation, and of the historical information it can convey. While focusing primarily on four main sources – the works of the Elder Seneca and Calpurnius Flaccus, and the two collections of shorter and longer declamations – it also draws on other sources to which we owe our knowledge of Latin declamation. A comprehensive overview of relevant research and of individual interpretations of selected pieces give an impression of the information that this long-disregarded literary genre can offer us, not least relating to the history of Roman society and its mentality.

The present essay constitutes the second (considerably) increased edition of the essay with the same title, published for the first time by “Centro Studi Anthologia Latina” in Perugia in 2016 and sold out in a short space of time. Arising from the awareness that, in theory as in editorial practice, the gap between conjecture and restitution sometimes appears almost imperceptible, the essay aims to show, with numerous textual exempla pertinent to authors ranging from Ovid to the end of the late ancient age, that even the best conjecture ope ingenii – considered evident by the scientific community – vel raro vel numquam can aspire to remedy the text in a definitive and incontrovertible way. The pragmatic choice made (alongside commonly accepted conjectures with other conjectures that aim to undermine them, in order to reveal the precariousness of each conjecture as such) allows to enter immediately and concretely in the merit of the discussion on how it is and how conjecture is made or should be made. So the exposure criterion reverses, in a certain sense, the traditional method in that it does not dictate rules in the abstract and shows how we proceed in discussing and remedying texts that present corruptions, even if not immediately evident. In this sense, the essay represents a synthesis between ecdotic theory and practice.

«Stages of Madness is an important new study of the representation of madness on the early modern English stage. Rigorously researched yet also highly readable, Andrew J. Power’s book provides original and compelling close readings of early modern plays such as The Spanish Tragedy and Hamlet while establishing a lineage of ideas about madness stemming from classical and medieval drama.» (Dr Rory Loughnane, Reader in Early Modern Studies, University of Kent) «Power propels the reader through an enlightened tour of madness. From the Bedlam-laden performance of Edgar in King Lear, through the schism-inflected demonic possession of The Comedy of Errors, to the furious revenges of Titus Andronicus, this book asks the biggest questions imaginable about the evolution of cultural understandings of how mind relates to self and how notions of sanity are constructed through the reflection of madness in religious and medical contexts.» (Dr Timothy Ryan Day, Associate Professor of English, Saint Louis University – Madrid Campus) In re-evaluating the contemporary staging of madness in the early modern period this book provides a clearer understanding and interpretation of characters who suffer from mental and emotional extremities in Shakespearean drama. It addresses three factors that contribute to early modern concepts of madness. These are theories of the «self» current and emergent in the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries; contemporary medical writings on madness; and the legacy of portrayals of madness from classical Greek and Roman drama, with a particular focus on the Roman tragedian, Seneca. The more complete understanding that this combined approach provides, facilitates a better-informed reading of Shakespeare’s plays, plays that so often deal with mental and emotional extremities that were once thought of as «madness». Blurbs for Stages of Madness: sin, sickness and Seneca in Shakespearean drama Stages of Madness is an important new study of the representation of madness on the early modern English stage. Rigorously researched yet also highly readable, Power's book provides original and compelling close readings of early modern plays such as The Spanish Tragedy and Hamlet while establishing a lineage of ideas about madness stemming from classical and medieval drama. Stages of Madness should be considered required reading for anyone interested in early modern drama as well as in premodern medical practice and intellectual history. Dr Rory Loughnane, Reader in Early Modern Studies, University of Kent Stages of Madness is an absolute must for the early modern bookshelf.
