Through a series of evocative essays exploring rain-drenched worlds of poetry, songs, paintings, architecture, films, gardens, festivals, music, and medicine, this lavishly illustrated collection examines the history of monsoon feelings in South Asia from the twelfth century to the present. Each essay is written by a specialist in the field of South Asian arts and culture, and investigates emotions as reflections and agents of social, cultural, and political change across borders of language and religion and between different arts and cultural practices. This history of emotions in the rain is as rich, surprising, beautiful and devastating as the thundering monsoon clouds, and will delight general and scholarly audiences alike

Elegant representations of nature and the four seasons populate a wide range of Japanese genres and media--from poetry and screen painting to tea ceremonies, flower arrangements, and annual observances. In Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons, Haruo Shirane shows how, when, and why this practice developed and explicates the richly encoded social, religious, and political meanings of this imagery. Refuting the belief that this tradition reflects Japan's agrarian origins and supposedly mild climate, Shirane traces the establishment of seasonal topics to the poetry composed by the urban nobility in the eighth century. After becoming highly codified and influencing visual arts in the tenth and eleventh centuries, the seasonal topics and their cultural associations evolved and spread to other genres, eventually settling in the popular culture of the early modern period. Contrasted with the elegant images of nature derived from court poetry was the agrarian view of nature based on rural life. The two landscapes began to intersect in the medieval period, creating a complex, layered web of competing associations. Shirane discusses a wide array of representations of nature and the four seasons in many genres, originating in both the urban and rural perspective: textual (poetry, chronicles, tales), cultivated (gardens, flower arrangement), material (kimonos, screens), performative (noh, festivals), and gastronomic (tea ceremony, food rituals). He reveals how this kind of "secondary nature," which flourished in Japan's urban architecture and gardens, fostered and idealized a sense of harmony with the natural world just at the moment it was disappearing. Illuminating the deeper meaning behind Japanese aesthetics and artifacts, Shirane clarifies the use of natural images and seasonal topics and the changes in their cultural associations and function across history, genre, and community over more than a millennium. In this fascinating book, the four seasons are revealed to be as much a cultural construction as a reflection of the physical world Introduction : Secondary nature, climate, and landscape -- Poetic topics and the making of the four seasons -- Visual culture, classical poetry, and linked verse -- Interiorization, flowers, and social ritual -- Rural landscape, social difference, and conflict -- Trans-seasonality, talismans, and landscape -- Annual observances, famous places, and entertainment -- Seasonal pyramid, parody, and botany -- Conclusion : History, genre, and social community -- Appendix : Seasonal topics in key texts.

The changing seasons captivated Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), who saw in their unending cycle the majesty of nature and the existence of a higher force. 'Van Gogh and the Seasons' is the first book to explore this central aspect of van Gogh's life and work. Van Gogh often linked the seasons to rural life and labor as men and women worked the land throughout the year. From his depictions of peasants and sowers to winter gardens, riverbanks, orchards, and harvests, he painted scenes that richly evoke the sensory pleasures and deprivations particular to each season. This stunning book brings to life the locales that defined his tumultuous career, from Arles, where he experienced his most crucial period of creativity, to Auvers-sur-Oise, where he committed suicide. It looks at van Gogh's interpretation of nature, the religious implications of the seasons in the era in which he lived, and how his art was perceived against the backdrop of various symbolist factions, antimaterialist debates, and esoteric beliefs in fin de siècle Paris. The book also features revealing extracts from the artist's correspondence and artworks from his own collection that provide essential context to the themes in his work Vincent van Gogh and the Seasons: Images of Nature and Humanity / Sjraar van Heugten -- 'To Everything there is a Season': The Rhythms of the Year in Vincent van Gogh's Socio-Religious Worldview / Joan Greer -- Conflicts of Interest: Vincent van Gogh and French Symbolism / Ted Gott -- The Seasons in van Gogh's Letters: A Selection / Sjraar van Heugten -- Vincent van Gogh Biography / Ted Gott -- Autumn / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Winter / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Spring / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Summer / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Van Gogh and Japanese Prints / Sophie Matthiesson -- Van Gogh's Collection of Prints / Ted Gott
