    The Kitāb al-Aghānī (the Book of Songs) is one of the most important sources for  Arabic literature and Islamic history. It was compiled during the first half of the tenth  century - a pivotal period for the formation of the Islamic sectarian identities, which  is the subject of keen and ongoing scholarly debate and fundamental to understanding  of the later Shīʿī Islam. While its compiler, Abū al-Faraj al-Iṣfahānī (died after  356/967), is generally viewed as a "Zaydī Shīʿī", no study has engaged in depth with  the manifestation of his sectarian perspective in the Aghānī. This book addresses the  question of whether al-Iṣfahānī's sectarian perspective can be discerned in the Aghānī  via analysis based primarily upon redaction criticism. By examining the compiler's  interventions, this book argues that al-Iṣfahānī to some extent presents past people  and events central to the Shīʿī worldview in accordance with his sectarian affiliation.  Furthermore, this work questions the label "Zaydī" that has been attached to al-  Iṣfahānī. Based on textual analyses of the Aghānī, as well as on evidence from his  Maqātil al-Ṭālibīyīn ("The Ṭālibid Martyrs") and other evidence from the tenth-  century context, this book suggests that al-Iṣfahānī's religious thought can be  construed as a "mild" form of Shīʿism - in the sense that it entail neither belief in a  specific lineage of imams nor repudiation of most of the Companions including the  first three caliphs - but cannot necessarily be identified with any sect, as set down in  the heresiography. It is also suggested that this kind of Shīʿism may have been  promoted by al-Iṣfahānī's patron, the Būyid vizier, Abū Muḥammad al-Muhallabī  (291-352/903-963), in the complex sectarian context of mid-tenth- century Iraq

    Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274) was an influential philosopher, theologian, mathematician and astronomer, besides being the first director of the famous observatory at Marāghah near Tabriz as well as a man of politics. Author of a large number of scholarly works, he is especially famous for such treatises as his Tajrīd al-iʿtiqād on theology, the Zīj-i Īlkhānī on astronomy, the Ḥall mushkilāt al-Ishārāt , his influential commentary on Avicenna’s (428/1037) Kitāb al-ishārāt wal-tanbīhāt on philosophy and logic, and his Akhlāq-i Nāṣirī on ethics. Ṭūsī spent at least half of his academic and political life among the Nizārī branch of the Ismailis, first in Quhistan in eastern Iran, and then in Alamut in the north and other Ismaili strongholds. The Persian work published here originated as a lecture series on Nizārī Ismaili doctrine, given by Ṭūsī in Alamut. The edition is a much improved version of the one by Ivanov, based on better manuscripts, unavailable to him.

    In diesem Band werden die ästhetischen und performativen Dimensionen des alevitischen Kulturerbes in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart in einem interdisziplinären Rahmen untersucht. Der vorliegende Band soll Zugang gewähren zu einer komplexen Thematik, die zweifellos weitere Forschungen und Analysen verdient This volume examines the aesthetic and performative dimensions of Alevi cultural heritage from past to present, in an interdisciplinary framework and using a wide range of approaches. The chapters analyse traditional, contemporary and transnational developments of Alevi cultural expression including modern adaptations, local and regional practices, Alevism in a wider context, textual sources and materiality. The perspectives of the various authors, including Robert Langer, Nicolas Elias, Sinibaldo De Rosa, Jérôme Cler, Judith Haug, Janina Karolewski and others, each coming from different disciplines, demonstrate the complexity of socio-historical and socio-cultural dynamics.     The Kitāb al-Aghānī (the Book of Songs) is one of the most important sources for  Arabic literature and Islamic history. It was compiled during the first half of the tenth  century - a pivotal period for the formation of the Islamic sectarian identities, which  is the subject of keen and ongoing scholarly debate and fundamental to understanding  of the later Shīʿī Islam. While its compiler, Abū al-Faraj al-Iṣfahānī (died after  356/967), is generally viewed as a "Zaydī Shīʿī", no study has engaged in depth with  the manifestation of his sectarian perspective in the Aghānī. This book addresses the  question of whether al-Iṣfahānī's sectarian perspective can be discerned in the Aghānī  via analysis based primarily upon redaction criticism. By examining the compiler's  interventions, this book argues that al-Iṣfahānī to some extent presents past people  and events central to the Shīʿī worldview in accordance with his sectarian affiliation.  Furthermore, this work questions the label "Zaydī" that has been attached to al-  Iṣfahānī. Based on textual analyses of the Aghānī, as well as on evidence from his  Maqātil al-Ṭālibīyīn ("The Ṭālibid Martyrs") and other evidence from the tenth-  century context, this book suggests that al-Iṣfahānī's religious thought can be  construed as a "mild" form of Shīʿism - in the sense that it entail neither belief in a  specific lineage of imams nor repudiation of most of the Companions including the  first three caliphs - but cannot necessarily be identified with any sect, as set down in  the heresiography. It is also suggested that this kind of Shīʿism may have been  promoted by al-Iṣfahānī's patron, the Būyid vizier, Abū Muḥammad al-Muhallabī  (291-352/903-963), in the complex sectarian context of mid-tenth- century Iraq

With this edition of the ʿAlī-nāma we now have access to a much older poem on this subject. Composed by someone using the alias of Rabīʿ, it was completed in 482/1089 in Khurāsān, most probably in or near the town of Sabzawār, just seventy years after the completion of Firdawsī's Shāh-nāma . The text is important because long before others, it acknowledges the heroes of the Shāh-nāma , some of whom were actually written into the script

Wolfgang Günter Lerch durchstreift Persien seit fünf Jahrzehnten. In dieser Zeit hat er die politische Entwicklung Irans journalistisch begleitet. Vor allem aber hat er das Land, seinen kulturellen Reichtum und die Gastfreundschaft seiner Bewohner zu schätzen gelernt. Eine Auswahl seiner Aufzeichnungen, seiner „persischen Papiere“, ist hier versammelt: Wolfgang Günter Lerch nimmt uns mit ins Teheran der Revolutionszeit, zu den Königsgräbern Naghsch-e Rostam in der Steinwüste, auf den Basar von Isfahan und in die paradiesischen Provinzen rund um das Kaspische Meer. Er macht uns mit großer Dichtkunst und Philosophie vertraut, mit der Religion des Zarathustra und dem Glauben der Bahai. Immer wieder greift er dabei aus in die weit zurückreichende Geschichte Persiens. In Lerchs persönlichen Betrachtungen stecken der ganze Reichtum und die Vielfalt der Kulturgeschichte Persiens. Biographical note: Wolfgang Günter Lerch war mehr als drei Jahrzehnte lang Redakteur und Reisekorrespondent der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung für Nordafrika und den Vorderen Orient.
