    Kaum jemand kennt die Vorgänger der sowjetischen Industriefotografie. Dieses Buch nimmt erstmals diese Aufnahmen in den Fokus und zeichnet nach, welche Rolle der Industrie und den Fabriken in den Bildwelten des Zarenreichs zugedacht war. Industriefotografien eröffneten Außenstehenden einen Blick hinter russische Fabriktore. Damit prägten sie in Alben, Fest­ und Zeitschriften sowie auf Postkarten das Bild von Fabriken in der russischen Gesellschaft. An den Schnittstellen von Fotografie­, Industrie­, Technik­ und visueller Geschichte analysiert die Autorin erstmals, wie sich die Industriefotografie im Zarenreich entwickelte und welche Botschaften über Industrialisierung und Fabriken die an der Herstellung und Verbreitung der neuen Bilder beteiligten Akteure mit den Aufnahmen vermittelten. Vergleiche mit Studien aus Frankreich, Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA stellen die russische Fabrikfotografie in einen größeren Kontext und verdeutlichen, dass weniger von einer nationalen als von einer europäisch/nordamerikanischen Bildsprache gesprochen werden muss.

    Das Internet als das Medium der Selbstdarstellung schlechthin wird auch von russischen Autorinnen und Autoren gerne genutzt. Sie übernehmen Bilder der Schriftstellerin bzw. des Schriftstellers aus der russischen Literaturtradition, passen sie auf die kommunikativen Gegebenheiten des Web an und erschaffen sie in medialen Experimenten neu. Doch wie lassen sich die unter der Oberfläche des Web 2.0 operierenden kreativen Mechanismen identifizieren und im Kontext der Literaturtheorie verorten? Gernot Howanitz verschränkt in seinem Buch qualitative und quantitative Verfahren im Sinne der Digital Humanities, um den (auto-)biographischen Praktiken im russischsprachigen Internet (Runet) nachzuspüren. Die dem Buch zugrundeliegende Dissertation wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Gustav-Figdor-Preis für Literaturwissenschaften, verliehen durch die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (2018), dem Dissertationspreis der Universität Passau (2018) sowie dem DARIAH-DE Digital Humanities Award (2018).

    At the turn of the twentieth century, the photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky undertook a quest to document an empire that was undergoing rapid change due to industrialization and the building of railroads. Between 1903 and 1916 Prokudin-Gorsky, who developed a pioneering method of capturing color images on glass plates, scoured the Russian Empire with the patronage of Nicholas II. Intrepidly carrying his cumbersome and awkward camera from the western borderlands over the Volga River to Siberia and central Asia, he created a singular record of Imperial Russia.In 1918 Prokudin-Gorsky escaped an increasingly chaotic, violent Russia and regained nearly 2,000 of his bulky glass negatives. His subsequent peripatetic existence before settling in Paris makes his collection's survival all the more miraculous. The U.S. Library of Congress acquired Prokudin-Gorsky's collection in 1948, and since then it has become a touchstone for understanding pre-revolutionary Russia.

The project compares William Brumfield's photographs of churches and locations in Russia with the same structures and places photographed by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, an early-20th-century Russian inventor of a color photography process, as much as a century earlier. Through this comparison, Brumfield assesses the state of preservation of Russia's architectural heritage and examines the appeal and pitfalls of seeing Prokudin-Gorsky's striking images as a recovery of Russia's lost past. Brumfield examines fervent Russian engagement with the Prokudin-Gorsky collection, which was recently made broadly available through digitization. The author questions the nostalgic assumptions of many analysts, who see the images as a portrayal of an idyllic Russia intact before the Soviet era and neglect the imperial violence present before the revolution. Prokudin-Gorsky himself was idealistic about the imperial potential. He intended his new color photography to convey the cultural and ethnic diversity of the vast Russian Empire, using this medium to impart a visual message from the provinces to the urban centers about the richness of Russia's history, culture, and borderlands. He escaped Russia in 1918 with many of the heavy glass negatives he used, and the Library of Congress ultimately bought the collection. Because of his own field experience photographing Russian architectural monuments, Brumfield was approached to catalog, restore, and exhibit Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs. While working on the project, he realized how much the two photographer's journeys across Russia had, unintentionally, intersected.
