Voltaire's rallying cry against fanaticism resonates with new force today. Nothing suggests the complex legacy of the Enlightenment more than the struggle of superstition, prejudice, and intolerance advocated by most of the Enlightenment philosophers, regardless of their ideological differences. The aim of this book is to undertake a reconsideration of the controversies surrounding the questions of religion, toleration, and fanaticism in the eighteenth century through an examination of Rousseau's dialogue with Voltaire. What come to light from this confrontation are two lead

"Drawing on his autobiographies, Margaret Ogrodnick analyses Jean-Jacques Rousseau's role as a theorist of the modern self, tracing the implications for his political thought. In elucidating the corresponding images in his autobiographical and philosophical works, the book attends especially to the hidden and intimate dimensions of the self. As a psycho-analytic thinker, Rousseau propounds the internal retrieval of instincts as the psychological basis of his democratic republic. As a philosopher of intimacy, he stresses the importance of intimate relations and private sentiments in building community bonds."--Jacket

"Free will is a key but contested concept in the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau: while the famed philosopher is known to have asserted that free will distinguishes human beings from animals, several interpreters have argued that he merely pretends to have this belief for the sake of healthy politics and to avoid persecution by religious authorities. Through careful readings of key texts and letters, The Free Animal offers a new and original exploration of Rousseau's views on free will, just in time for the 200th anniversary of his birth Lee MacLean shows that Rousseau needs and uses the idea of human consciousness of free will to explain the development of morality, convention, and vice. MacLean bases her argument on a broad range of texts, from canonical works to Rousseau's untranslated letters and drafts. Featuring careful analyses and an extensive engagement with the secondary literature, The Free Animal offers a novel interpretation of the changing nature and complexity of Rousseau's intention."--pub. desc

"In her interdisciplinary book, Nancy Yousef addresses the emergence of autonomy, demonstrating that the ideal was beset from its beginnings by profound concerns over the possibilities and grounds of human relations and interdependence. Isolated Cases draws attention to the strain of intersubjective anxieties and longings hidden within representations of the individual as self-sufficient and self-defining. Rousseau's Legacy is an original and ambitious work of literary scholarship that focuses on the emergence with Rousseau of a new and influential paradigm of the writer who brings together revolutionary sociopolitical critique and 'confessionalism'. Combining a wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary theory with an informed interest in sociopolitical context and cultural history, the author goes on to explore the persistent importance of the Rousseauist paradigm through the close reading of works by a number of major French writers from Stendahl to Duras, Althusser, and Foucault

"The arts have always mirrored economic and political reality, so it's no surprise that the global recession has strained the financial resources of established and emerging nations alike and has bitten deeply into cultural budgets. In this collection of essays, the first book to address the economics of the arts since the downturn in funding, an international group of experts examines the current needs of the arts as well as the questions - political, financial, ethical, and aesthetic - that go hand-in-hand with the problem of money. The book grows out of a 1993 session of the Salzburg Seminar." "Contributors assess the contemporary economic challenge of cultural policy from the perspective of giving as well as receiving support. They raise a wealth of new ideas on funding, planning, censorship, evaluative criteria for grants, educational tourism, and the role of the community from the grassroots to global levels."- A new English translation, the first to be based on the definitive French Pléiade edition.
