    This survey challenges conventional ways of viewing the Victorian novel. The author explores the extremely varied and often experimental prose fiction of the period, paying attention to contemporary bestsellers as well as to major literary works. He reminds the reader that most Victorian novelists had their imaginations shaped not by high Victorianism, but by the ideals and sensibility of the Romantic period, and suggests that their work therefore embodies a tension between idealism and a new materialist objectivity. The volume is based on the premise that a broad understanding of the Victorian period powerfully assists our understanding of its prose fiction. For this reason, the author not only provides overviews of the historical and social contexts of the Victorian novel, but also considers its relationship to historical, religious and biographical writing. The literary achievements of major novelists receive individual entries, while a section on topics considers issues such as colonialism, scientific speculation, the psychic and the supernatural, and working-class reading.

Wie die Untersuchung zeigt, haben schon die Schriftsteller der romantischen Generation im frühen 19. Jahrhundert ihre Vorstellung von einem „deutschen Wesen0 in rigoroser Abgrenzung zu angeblichen jüdischen Charaktereigenschaften entworfen. Dies wird in der Studie anhand essayistischer, aber auch fiktionaler Texte unter anderem von Achim von Arnim und Clemens Brentano gezeigt. The nationally motivated hostility towards Jews did not just start with Richard Wagner or the anti-Semitic writings produced in Imperial Germany from 1871 onwards. As the study shows, even the writers of the Romantic generation in the early 19th century drew up their idea of a 0German character0 which was rigorously delineated from alleged Jewish characteristics. This is shown in the study using both essayistic and fictional texts by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano among others.     This book explores previously unexamined links between the arbitrary as articulated in linguistic theories on the one hand, and in political discourse about power on the other. In particular, Willam Keach shows how Enlightenment conceptions of the arbitrary were contested and extended in British Romantic writing. In doing so, he offers a new paradigm for understanding the recurrent problem of verbal representation in Romantic writing and the disputes over stylistic performance during this period. With clarity and force, Keach reads these phenomena in relation to a rapidly shifting literary marketplace and to the social pressures in Britain generated by the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the class antagonisms that culminated in the Peterloo Massacre. The question of what it means to think of language or politics as arbitrary persists through postmodern thinking, and this book advances an unfinished dialogue between Romantic culture and the critical techniques we currently use to analyze it. Keach's intertwined linguistic and political account of arbitrary power culminates in a detailed textual analysis of the language of revolutionary violence. Including substantial sections on Blake, Wollstonecraft, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, P. B. Shelley, Keats, and Anna Jameson, Arbitrary Power will engage not only students and scholars of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature but also those interested in critical and linguistic theory and in social and political history.

Untersucht werden unter anderem die universale Europaidee der Romantik und ihre Ablösung durch nationale Konzepte, die entsprechenden Formen der Nationalliteraturgeschichtsschreibung, die Melancholie-Konzepte in der Restaurationsepoche und die nationalspezifischen Varianten des europäischen Dekadenzthemas, ferner die Positionen des europäischen Konservativismus und Ästhetizismus, die Differenz zwischen italienischem Futurismus und deutschem Expressionismus, die Bewältigungsstrategien des Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieges und die literarische Erinnerungsarbeit am Holocaust. Approaches to a history of European mentality in the modern age are derived here from the confrontation of thematically related works in German and Italian literature. The emphasis is on the following topics: the universal idea of Europe advanced in Romanticism and its replacement by national concepts, the corresponding forms taken by the historiography of national literature, the concepts of melancholy operative in the age of restoration, the specific national variations on the theme of decadence, the positions taken up by European conservatism and aestheticism, the comparison between Italian futurism and German expressionism, strategies for coming to terms with the First and Second World War, and literary memorialization of the holocaust.

    Die Metapher «Affektökonomie» hat Hochkonjunktur in der aktuellen Theoriebildung. Das Kompositum ist indessen problematisch, führt es doch zwei sich widerstrebende Begriffe zusammen: den Affekt, der sich qua emotionalem Grundimpuls willkürlich jeder Herrschaft widersetzt und die Ökonomie, die für das gesetzmäßige Haushalten steht. Die Theorie-Metapher Affektökonomie verdeckt also ihre grundlegende Paradoxie: die Beiträge hinterfragen deshalb die theoretische und metaphorologische Bedingtheit und die Grenzen dieser Konstellation. Dies ist umso wichtiger, als es sich bei der Affektökonomie um eine Leitmetapher für die Funktion von Literatur handelt, die im Zusammenspiel mit dem modernen, politischökonomischen Regime entsteht. These ist, dass ökonomische Strukturen in Texten affektiv besetzt und erzählerisch spekulativ hintertrieben werden. Gefragt wird nach einer anderen Poetik der ästhetischen Moderne, die sich nicht von der großen politischen Revolution von 1789 aus schreibt, sondern von jenem Wissenstransfer um 1800 aus, der die antike Haushaltungslehre im Zeichen der Metapher neubestimmt: und dies nicht nur im Sinne von Sachverhalten und Gegenständen, sondern vor allem auch mit Blick auf die persönlich-affektiven Beziehungen.

    Die Studie analysiert frühromantische Individualitätskonzepte und ihre Aktualität in Literatur und Philosophie der ästhetischen Moderne nach 1945. Ausgehend von Novalis' Werk wird das Ich als Kunstwerk in den Blick genommen, das in Figuren des Androgynen, des Rollentauschs, des Geschlechtswechsels sowie vielfältiger Formen der Liebe Gestalt gewinnt. Autorinnen und Autoren wie Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf und Michel Foucault haben in direkter Anknüpfung an Novalis die Möglichkeiten dieses freiheitlichen Selbstentwurfs unter den Bedingungen moderner Machtkonstellationen ausgelotet. The study analyses early Romantic models of individuality and their relevance in the literature and philosophy of aesthetic modernism after 1945. Starting with Novalis, the self as a work of art is delineated in the way it manifests itself in figural constellations of androgynity, role-change, sex-change and various forms of love. Authors like Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf and Michel Foucault have directly taken their bearings from Novalis in plumbing the potentialities of a liberated creation of the self under the conditions dictated by modern power constellations.

    Die Studie analysiert frühromantische Individualitätskonzepte und ihre Aktualität in Literatur und Philosophie der ästhetischen Moderne nach 1945. Ausgehend von Novalis' Werk wird das Ich als Kunstwerk in den Blick genommen, das in Figuren des Androgynen, des Rollentauschs, des Geschlechtswechsels sowie vielfältiger Formen der Liebe Gestalt gewinnt. Autorinnen und Autoren wie Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf und Michel Foucault haben in direkter Anknüpfung an Novalis die Möglichkeiten dieses freiheitlichen Selbstentwurfs unter den Bedingungen moderner Machtkonstellationen ausgelotet. The study analyses early Romantic models of individuality and their relevance in the literature and philosophy of aesthetic modernism after 1945. Starting with Novalis, the self as a work of art is delineated in the way it manifests itself in figural constellations of androgynity, role-change, sex-change and various forms of love. Authors like Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf and Michel Foucault have directly taken their bearings from Novalis in plumbing the potentialities of a liberated creation of the self under the conditions dictated by modern power constellations.

In beiden Bereichen, auch in den Erscheinungsformen der Werke, zeigt sich eine Art von Reflexion als die Signalisation intellektuell-produktiver romantischer Kunst und damit als ein Prinzip von zeitübergreifender genereller Bedeutung. This study edition is an unaltered reprint of the 2nd edition of the work published in 1977. Its subject is of equal interest for research on (German) Romanticism and for problems of art theory in the modern age. Romantic irony is discussed first in terms of the theories behind it (F. Schlegel, Solger, etc.) and then in terms of structural features of literary works displaying its effects (Novalis, Tieck, E.T.A. Hoffmann). Both here and in the outward appearance of the works themselves, it is possible to discern a specific kind of reflection as the outward and visible token of the intellectually productive side of Romantic art. It is this that gives romantic irony its status as a principle of general significance over and above the period in which it made its appearance.
