Le Flaubert réel begründet den Realismusbegriff der Flaubertforschung neu. Diese Neubegründung erfolgt einerseits in Auseinandersetzung mit Wissenschaften wie Medizin und Psychiatrie. Andererseits hat die moderne Literatur ihre Urszene nach Hegels Definition der romantischen Kunst und Auerbachs Untersuchungen zu Evangelium und Realismus in Fleischwerdung und Kreuzigung. Sie wird geboren aus dem Geiste eines antichristlichen Christentums, das sich als Metamorphose antiker Idolatrien entpuppt. Aber dieser aufklärerische Gestus der Kritik des Christentums ist nur ein Aspekt. Auf der Rückseite dieser Ironie begründet Flaubert die moderne Literatur durch eine abgründige Überbietung des Christentums jenseits aller Säkularisation mit dessen eigenen Mitteln. Le Flaubert réel establishes a new concept of realism in Flaubert research. This re-definition is the result on the one hand of an occupation with disciplines such as medicine and psychiatry. On the other, following Hegel’s definition of Romantic art and Auerbach’s studies on the gospel and realism, modern literature has its primal scene in the incarnation and crucifixion. It is born out of the spirit of an anti-christian Christianity, which turns out to be a metamorphosis of antique idolatries. Yet this progressive gestus of a critique of Christianity only provides one aspect. On the back of this irony, Flaubert establishes modern literature by unfathomably out-christianising Christianity beyond all secularisation.

The novella from the Age of Realism does not represent literary reality, but literary artificiality. It is characterised by an aesthetic quality which until now has only been commented on marginally. The novellas display 'artfulness' by continuing the Romantic programme through strategies of aestheticisation of both a formal nature (e.g. framing) and a substantive kind (e.g. logical inconsistencies). ?Poetry of poetry’ is taken seriously as a guideline and runs counter to the efforts of the Realists to picture reality.     Main description: Die Novelle des Realismus stellt keine literarische Wirklichkeit dar, sondern literarische Künstlichkeit. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine ästhetische Qualität aus, die bislang nur beiläufig vermerkt worden ist: ,Kunstfertigkeit‘ können die Novellen insofern aufweisen, als sie durch Ästhetisierungsstrategien formaler (etwa Rahmungen) wie inhaltlicher Art (etwa logische Unstimmigkeiten) das romantische Programm fortführen: ,Poesie der Poesie‘ wird als Richtlinie ernstgenommen und läuft den Bemühungen der Realisten um Wirklichkeitsabbildung zuwider. The novella from the Age of Realism does not represent literary reality, but literary artificiality. It is characterised by an aesthetic quality which until now has only been commented on marginally. The novellas display 'artfulness' by continuing the Romantic programme through strategies of aestheticisation of both a formal nature (e.g. framing) and a substantive kind (e.g. logical inconsistencies). ?Poetry of poetry’ is taken seriously as a guideline and runs counter to the efforts of the Realists to picture reality.
