    Ursachen, Verlauf und Folgen des Kolonialkrieges, den das deutsche Kaiserreich von 1904 bis 1908 gegen Herero und Nama in Deutsch-Südwestafrika (heute Namibia) führte. (Petra Friedmann) Rezension: Am 12. Januar 2004 jährte sich zum 100. Mal der Beginn des Kolonialkrieges, den das deutsche Kaiserreich als Antwort auf den Herero-Aufstand gegen dieses Volk sowie den Stamm der Nama in Deutsch-Südwest-Afrika (seit 1990 Namibia) führte. Im zu diesem Termin erschienenen Band werden Ursachen, Verlauf und Folgen dieses Krieges dargestellt und aus unterschiedlichsten Blickwinkeln beleuchtet. Dabei findet die historische Perspektive der Deutschen wie der Afrikaner in Beiträgen namhafter Historiker gleichermaßen Berücksichtigung. Ebenso wird die Frage nach der Bedeutung des 1. von Deutschen verübten Völkermordes für die weitere Geschichte beider Länder gestellt, eines Völkermordes, der im Bewusstsein der Deutschen fast völlig vergessen ist, während er für Namibia bis heute ein nationales Trauma darstellt. Möglich und wünschenswert, dass der klar und verständlich geschriebene Forschungsband aufgrund des augenblicklichen Medieninteresses am Thema zumindest in Großstadtbibliotheken mit studentischen Nutzern nachgefragt wird. Ansonsten wohl eher von marginalem Interesse in öffentliche Bibliotheken. (3) (Petra Friedmann)

    American Realist Fictions of Marriage: From Kate Chopin, Edith Wharton to Frances Harper, Pauline Hopkins intervenes in the field of American literary realism by arguing that selected marriage fiction of Kate Chopin, Frances Harper, Pauline Hopkins, Williams Dean Howells, Emma Dunham-Kelly, and Edith Wharton interrogates the possibility of harmonious societies based on racial, gender, and social equality. Megda (1891), An Imperative Duty (1891), Iola Leroy (1892), The Awakening (1899), Contending Forces (1900), and The House of Mirth (1905) express suspicion about marriage and its potential consequences. These six novels use marriage as a forum to explore the problem of the “color line,” sexism, and class difference that promoted social boundaries. These novels demonstrate how choices about marriage made by female protagonists are metaphorical representations of social equality while simultaneously revealing threats to that ideal vision. In a wider context, American Realist Fictions of Marriage aims to widen the conventional narrow focus on canonical realist writers by highlighting intellectual exchanges that were taking place between traditional and non-traditional writers about marriage.

    Ursachen, Verlauf und Folgen des Kolonialkrieges, den das deutsche Kaiserreich von 1904 bis 1908 gegen Herero und Nama in Deutsch-Südwestafrika (heute Namibia) führte. (Petra Friedmann) Rezension: Am 12. Januar 2004 jährte sich zum 100. Mal der Beginn des Kolonialkrieges, den das deutsche Kaiserreich als Antwort auf den Herero-Aufstand gegen dieses Volk sowie den Stamm der Nama in Deutsch-Südwest-Afrika (seit 1990 Namibia) führte. Im zu diesem Termin erschienenen Band werden Ursachen, Verlauf und Folgen dieses Krieges dargestellt und aus unterschiedlichsten Blickwinkeln beleuchtet. Dabei findet die historische Perspektive der Deutschen wie der Afrikaner in Beiträgen namhafter Historiker gleichermaßen Berücksichtigung. Ebenso wird die Frage nach der Bedeutung des 1. von Deutschen verübten Völkermordes für die weitere Geschichte beider Länder gestellt, eines Völkermordes, der im Bewusstsein der Deutschen fast völlig vergessen ist, während er für Namibia bis heute ein nationales Trauma darstellt. Möglich und wünschenswert, dass der klar und verständlich geschriebene Forschungsband aufgrund des augenblicklichen Medieninteresses am Thema zumindest in Großstadtbibliotheken mit studentischen Nutzern nachgefragt wird. Ansonsten wohl eher von marginalem Interesse in öffentliche Bibliotheken. (3) (Petra Friedmann)

It has served as the source for various interconnected, yet often also conflicting, narratives and discourses through which the question of human and civil rights in the U.S. has been constantly debated and re-negotiated. This volume investigates the U.S.-American culture of rights as it has evolved and continues to evolve throughout U.S. (legal) history as well as in U.S. literature and in popular culture.
