In The White Savior Film, Matthew Hughey provides a cogent, multipronged analysis of this subgenre of films to investigate the underpinnings of the Hollywood-constructed images of idealized (and often idealistic) white Americans. Hughey considers the production, distribution, and consumption of white savior films to show how the dominant messages of sacrifice, suffering, and redemption are perceived by both critics and audiences. Examining the content of fifty films, nearly 3,000 reviews, and interviews with viewer focus groups, he accounts for the popularity of this subgenre and its portrayal of "racial progress." The White Savior Film shows how we as a society create and understand these films and how they reflect the political and cultural contexts of their time. "--

"This book examines the proliferation of gay, lesbian, and queer representations in mainstream American media over the past forty years. Kohnen argues that queer media visibility has become a narrowly defined category that upholds normative ideas about sexuality, race, and the American nation. She examines how and why this limited and limiting concept of queer visibility has become the embodiment of progressive and liberatory LGBT media representations and traces the uneven history of queer media visibility through crucial turning points including the early gay liberation movement of the late 1960s/70s, the AIDS crisis of the 80s, the so-called explosion of gay visibility of the 90s and the reimagination of queer citizenship after the events of 9/11. Further, Kohnen reveals how queer visibility shapes and reflects not only media representations, but the real and imagined geographies, histories, and peoples of the American nation"--

"This multidisciplinary collection examines post-apocalyptic TV and film for the ways in which these narratives reveal, reproduce, and occasionally resist twenty-first century anxieties and desires around race, gender, and sexuality. Contributors consider the complex interplay between popular culture, social fears and desires, hope and horror through readings of the post-apocalypse in The Walking Dead, True Blood, Falling Skies, Resident Evil, and others"--

"Screening Difference takes us on a fascinating voyage through major movie blockbusters that deal with the encounter between "us"--Mainstream white Hollywood - and "them"--the filmic representations of other races, ethnicities, and cultures. Looking at subtle orientations in casting and makeup, sets and props, lighting and camera movements, and music and language, this lively book follows the best-known genres and sub-genres - from animated cartoons and wilderness films to romantic movies and colonial adventures. Screening Difference tracks the stories back to their origins and patiently dissects the hidden messages that have crept into them."--Jacket
