While teaching writing to undergraduate science students, Gilpin and Patchet-Golubev discovered that although many relatively sophisticated manuals for scientific writing exist, most are aimed at mainly professionals or specialists and are of little practical use to the majority of students. This introductory guide fills that large gap. Direct and friendly in tone the book provides clear and concise explanations of the basic elements of scientific writing required of students. The various genres are detailed - in particular lab reports and research essays - as well as scientific articles, poster presentations, proposals, and even essay exams. Similarities and differences among these genres are underlined in order to illustrate structural principles and to provide practical writing tips. A detailed chapter covers the elements of grammar and punctuation that are fundamental to all good writing; it also outlines some key points about scientific style in particular. Using accessible language throughout, the authors organize their material with helpful lists, copious examples, and boxed writing and research tips. There are several useful appendices (including a classification chart of organisms and an international units conversion chart), an index, and selected bibliography on science and technical writing. Berücksichtigt werden nicht nur bekannte Personen, sondern auch viele, die in Gefahr sind in Vergessenheit zu geraten und die hier erstmals in einem Verzeichnis aufgeführt und mit biographischen Angaben vorgestellt werden. Die biographischen Einträge enthalten den Namen, Pseudonyme, abweichende Namensformen, Geburts- und Sterbedaten, bzw. -orte, die berufliche Laufbahn, eine Auswahl veröffentlichter Werke, soweit eruierbar die Namen der Eltern, eventuelle Würdigungen sowie Angaben zum Nachlass. Die Quellenangaben aus einschlägigen Handbüchern, Lexika, Monographien, Zeitschriften- und Zeitungsartikeln u. ä. ermöglichen weitere Recherchen. The Handbuch österreichischer Autorinnen und Autoren jüdischer Herkunft contains approx. 8,000 short biographies of authors who have influenced intellectual life in Austria since the 18th century. Included are not only authors in the strictest sense but also personalities from journalism, science and culture, from music and film. Besides the names of well-known persons also found in other encyclopaedias, great care has been taken to include those who are in danger of being forgotten, presented here for the first time with biographical data in an encyclopaedia. The biographical entries contain the names, pseudonyms, name variations, dates and places of birth and death, as well as professional career along with a selection of published works. Main occupation, the names of the parents, if they can be traced, any awards and details of unpublished works are presented separately. The individual entries have references to appropriate source material, facilitating further research. Also included are an index of pseudonyms and name variations, an index of occupations, a list of place-names which contains the names of the places of birth and death, arranged in their respective historical regions, and a geographical index. Im bibliographischen Teil werden die Werke soweit möglich in Autopsie bibliographiert und annotiert. Band 17 verzeichnet z. B. Moses Mendelssohn, Richard M. Meyer, Alfred Mombert, Lina Morgenstern, Paul Nathan, Max Nordau, José Orabuena, Bertha Pappenheim, Hugo Wolfgang Philipp. The Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren covers the Jewish contribution to German-speaking cultural history in some 1,300 biographical-bibliographic articles. Besides authors of literature in the broadest sense, representatives of the humanities can be found and other individuals from public life who, through their work, were influential beyond their specialist field. The biographical part includes information on the authors and documents political and Zionist involvement, circles of friends, and attitude towards Judaism, with autobiographical quotations wherever possible. Each biography is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary literature in which the works are critically analysed and annotated, as far as possible or relevant. Quotations by the author, content of writings and/or excerpts from reviews are provided to further facilitate research.
