    »Der Buchstabe tötet, der Geist macht lebendig.« Achim Geisenhanslüke geht dieser Maxime kritisch nach, um auf dem Buchstaben als der Grundlage geistiger Prozesse zu bestehen. Seine komparatistisch angelegte Studie macht deutlich, welche Bedeutung dem Buchstaben in hermeneutischen und psychoanalytischen Deutungsprozessen, Gedichten und Übersetzungen sowie dem modernen Roman zukommt. Dies zeigt sich nicht nur in der Hermeneutik von Friedrich Schleiermacher bis zu Sigmund Freud, sondern vor allem in der Literatur der Moderne, so bei Friedrich Hölderlin und Paul Celan, aber auch bei Vladimir Nabokov und Thomas Pynchon. Der Raum zwischen Buchstabe und Geist erweist sich hier als ein Ort der Interaktion, an dem das Leben des Geistes nur zum Ausdruck kommt, wenn es den Buchstaben anerkennt und an seinem eigenen Leben partizipieren lässt.

Die psychoanalytischen Interpretationen entdecken dabei eine Textstruktur, in der sich das Muster bürgerlicher Subjektivität abzeichnet. Deren notorischer Konflikt zwischen konkreter Lebenserfahrung und dem davon mythisch abgehobenen Humanitätsideal bildet den impliziten Angriffspunkt des literarischen Humors. Er gewinnt symptomatische Bedeutung, indem er die chronische Spannung im liberalen Menschenbild vorübergehend aufhebt durch die Präsentation einer Figur, an der die widersprüchlichen Faktoren auf ambivalente Weise exponiert werden.

Mit dem Terminus »Agency«, der zum Grundbegriff post-disziplinärer kritischer Sozialforschung avanciert ist, lässt sich jedoch trotz dieses 'Todes des Subjekts' weiterhin an Widerständigkeit und Subjektivität festhalten: Durch ihn können aus hermeneutisch-pragmatischer, gruppen-/psychoanalytischer und sozialwissenschaftlicher Sicht neue Aspekte des Tun-und-Lassens bzw. Handelns beleuchtet werden.In diesem Band schlagen die Autor_innen unterschiedliche Agency-Konzepte vor, die das sozial situierte Selbst zwischen Macht- und Herrschaftsstrukturen sowie kreativen und reflexiven Handlungspotenzialen ansiedeln. The discovery of the unconscious and the psychoanalytical term of (subconscious) acting have blown apart classic theories of action. Yet the term "agency", which has become the basic term of post-disciplinary social research, makes it possible that resistance and subjectivity can still be maintained despite this "death of the subject": It allows for the illumination of new aspects of doing and not doing, respectively acting, from the points of view of hermeneutics/pragmatism, group-analysis/ psychoanalysis and social studies. In this book, the authors suggest various agency concepts that establish the self socially situated between structures of power and control as well as creative and reflexive acting potentials.

    'Psychoanalysis and the Love of Arabic' reorients the debates around Arabic and global modernity in relation to psychoanalysis, capitalism and universality. The study offers a psychoanalytic reading of 19th-century works written during the nahda movement by Ahmad Faris Shidyaq (1805-87) and Butrus al-Bustani (1819-83), showing how a curious relationship was forged between language and politics - one driven by both a desire for, and anxiety about, modernity. In analysing the abstractness of national belonging as belonging to the language, author Nadia Bou Ali considers why modern Arabic grammarians fell in love with language again and explores how language became ideated as a 'mirror of the nation'.

Und wie kommt es in der wissenschaftlichen Rezeption zu der auffällig kontrapunktischen Interpretation des Bildes? Johanna Hodde nähert sich diesen Fragen empirisch durch eine tiefenpsychologische Exploration des Erlebensprozesses während der Bildbetrachtung sowie einer anschließenden Bildreflexion im Lichte einschlägiger Bild- und Subjekttheorien.

Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus.

In Shakespeare studies, the New Historicism and cognitive psychology have hindered a dynamic conversation engaging depth-oriented models of the mind from taking place. The essays in New Psychoanalytic Readings of Shakespeare: Cool Reason and Seething Brains seek to redress this situation, by engaging a broad spectrum of psychoanalytic theory and criticism, from Freud to the present, to read individual plays closely. These essays show how psychoanalytic theory helps us to rethink the plays' history of performance; their treatment of gender, sexuality, and race; their view of history and trauma; and the ways in which they anticipate contemporary psychodynamic treatment.
