    Mit der starken Position der Sportberichterstattung etwa durch die Ausdehnung der Live-Berichterstattung, die hohen Einschaltquoten auf allen Kanälen gerade im Fußball und die steigende Digitalisierung der Sport-Medienwelt hin zu einer 24-Stunden-Übertragung im Internet, rücken die in der Direktübertragung tätigen Sportjournalisten immer mehr in den Fokus des Publikums. Entsprechend lassen sich bei den einstigen Außenseitern der Redaktion ein verändertes Selbstverständnis und ein neues Selbstbewusstsein erkennen. Die vorliegende Studie bietet eine tragfähige Grundlage für die wissenschaftliche Erforschung der Sportkommunikatoren. Die wertorientierte Zielsetzung ist es, die wachsende Bedeutung der Live-Berichterstattung im Sport ebenso wie die wachsende Bedeutung der live berichtenden Sportjournalisten innerhalb ihrer Berufsgruppe zu dokumentieren. Das Buch gibt zunächst einen umfassenden und aktuellen Einblick in das Berufsfeld Sportjournalist sowie das Themengebiet Sportjournalismus in Deutschland. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf der medialen Live-Berichterstattung. Der empirische Teil stellt das Kernstück dieser Untersuchung dar. Eine qualitative Vorstudie in Form von zehn Leitfadeninterviews mit namhaften Sportjournalisten war richtungsweisend für die daraus abgeleitete quantitative Umfrage 2015. Die final ausgewerteten 1006 Fragebögen unterstreichen den repräsentativen Charakter dieser Erhebung unter Deutschlands Sportjournalisten. Die Ergebnisse bekräftigen eine Sonderstellung der Sportjournalisten aus der Direktübertragung innerhalb der Berufsgruppe. Eine Analyse aus der Sicht von zehn Spitzensport-Akteuren – darunter ein Fußball-Weltmeister und eine Weltklasse-Tennisspielerin – runden die Studie ab. Der Wert der vorliegenden Publikation geht jedoch noch weiter: Die Autorin entwickelte aus den Ergebnissen abschließend ein neues Image-Modell deutscher Sportjournalisten im crossmedialen Zeitalter.

    In European men's club football, competitive balance is decreasing, and therefore uncertainty of outcome too. The empirical studies do not give a clear unanimous answer to the question whether this decrease leads to lower utility for the fans, and so to lower welfare, hence this critical review of the literature. Three types of uncertainty of outcome have been distinguished in the literature: short-term, seasonal, and long-term, with possible different dimensions within one type. The paper argues that it is justified to interpret the literature in the following way: a decrease in one or two types of uncertainty of outcome, or a certain more specific dimension, can lead to serious reductions in welfare, while the conclusion may be different for other types or dimensions. Several studies suggest that a decrease in competitive balance has no effect on welfare, or just a small effect, as long as the competitive balance remains above some minimum level (or range) whereas once the competitive balance is below the minimum level, any further decrease in it results in serious reductions in welfare. Taking these and other points into account, the conclusion of the review is that it is highly plausible that the present level of competitive balance is below the welfare-maximising level in most competitions at least, and any further decrease in competitive balance will seriously reduce welfare.

    Despite still being younger than a decade, the theory of multisided market has offered numerous valuable insights for the analysis of industries in which a supplier serves two distinct customer groups that are indirectly interrelated by externalities. Examples include payment systems, matching agencies, commercial media and software platforms. However, professional sports markets have largely been neglected so far in this kind of research although they possess the characteristics of multisided markets. We contribute to filling this gap by describing the platform elements of professional suppliers of sports events and outlining issues where an application of this theoretical framework is likely to provide valuable insights and to add to the existing knowledge. Among these problems are integrative pricing strategies of sports clubs towards such different customer groups like attendees, broadcasters, sponsors, etc., including their welfare and antitrust implications, design decisions of sports associations in order to promote positive feedback loops among the customer groups as well as management strategies to reinforce positive externalities among customer groups and alleviate negative ones. -- sports economics ; sports management ; two-sided markets ; multisided platforms ; professional sports business ; pricing strategies ; broadcasting rights

    This paper develops a theory of contests based on perceived abilities, and provides evidence for the predictions of this theory using panel data from professional soccer. We examine how soccer players perform in club matches during the informal)nomination contests for national teams prior to an important international Cup, the Euro 2008. Our differences-in-differences analysis uses players from nonqualified nations who play in the same league as a control group. We find a large positive effect of nomination contest participation on several output measures for players with intermediate chances of being nominated, as proxied by past national team participations. For players with no prior national team experience there is no significant effect. We also find support for the theory that players whose nomination is close to certain reduce their effort in order to avoid injuries or exhaustion prior to the Cup. Finally, any positive reaction is strongest for young players.

    We analyze the impact of interim ranking on the risk taking and performance behaviour of professional athletes participating in international weightlifting competitions. Weightlifting competitions are multistage tournaments with the unique characteristic that the athletes must announce in advance the amount they intend to lift at each stage, thus allowing quantification of the riskiness of their choices. We present two key findings. First, risk taking exhibits an inverted-U relationship with rank: risk taking increases up to rank six, but athletes then revert to safer strategies towards the bottom of the ranking. Second, athletes systematically underperform when ranked closer to the top, despite higher incentives to perform well. An athlete is more than 30 percent less likely to lift the announced weight when ranked first than tenth. Athletes also underperform in relatively more prestigious competitions, when the competition is more intense, and when the potential gain from a successful lift is higher. Taken together, these findings suggest that athletes may systematically "choke under pressure".

    Im Mai 2008 verabschiedete der Fußball-Weltverband (FIFA) eine Resolution zur sogenann-ten 6+5-Regel. Nach dieser Regel muss die Anzahl einheimischer Spieler in der Startforma-tion von Vereinsmannschaften im Profifußball stufenweise aufgestockt werden. Über die Reglementierung des Einsatzes ausländischer Spieler wird schon seit Inkrafttreten des sogenannten Bosman-Urteils diskutiert, durch welches der uneingeschränkte Einsatz von Spielern aus EU-Staaten in Vereinsmannschaften erlaubt wurde. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht daher empirisch die Auswirkungen der Öffnung des Spielermarktes auf die Leistung der Vereine der ersten Fußball-Bundesliga sowie auf die Heterogenität der Liga und gibt einen Ausblick auf mögliche Auswirkungen für den einheimischen Nachwuchs. In May 2008 the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) passed a resolution concerning the so called "6+5-Rule". According to this rule the number of domestic players in the starting line-up of professional soccer teams has to be increased step by step. The regulation of foreign players is discussed since the commencement of the Bosman-ruling, which permitted inter alia the unrestricted use of foreign players in the squad of sport teams. This paper empirically analyses the effects of the opening of the players’ market on the per-formance of the teams in the Bundesliga, the first division of German soccer, as well as the effects on the heterogeneity of the league and looks out on potential effects on domestic up-and-coming players.

    Despite still being younger than a decade, the theory of multisided market has offered numerous valuable insights for the analysis of non-ordinary industries in which a supplier serves two distinct customer groups that are indirectly interrelated by externalities. Examples include payment systems, matching agencies, commercial media and software platforms. However, professional sports markets have largely been neglected so far in this kind of research although they possess the characteristics of multisided markets. We contribute to filling this gap by describing the platform elements of professional suppliers of sports events and outlining problems where an application of this theoretical framework is likely to provide valuable insights and to add to the existing knowledge. Among these problems are integrative pricing strategies of sports clubs towards such different customer groups like attendees, broadcasters, sponsors, etc., including their welfare and antitrust implications, design decisions of sports associations in order to promote positive feedback loops among the customer groups as well as strategies to reinforce positive externalities among customer groups and alleviate negative ones. -- sports economics ; two-sided markets ; multisided platforms ; professional sports business ; pricing strategies ; broadcasting rights

    This paper uses data from nine tennis Grand Slam tournaments played between 2005 and 2007 to assess whether men and women respond differently to competitive pressure in a setting with large monetary rewards. In particular, it asks whether the quality of the game deteriorates as the stakes become higher. The paper conducts two parallel analyses, one based on aggregate set-level data, and one based on detailed point-by-point data, which is available for a selected subsample of matches in four of the nine tournaments under examination. The set-level analysis indicates that both men and women perform less well in the final and decisive set of the match. This result is robust to controls for the length of the match and to the inclusion of match and player-specific fixed effects. The drop in performance of women in the decisive set is slightly larger than that of men, but the difference is not statistically significant at conventional levels. On the other hand, the detailed point-by-point analysis reveals that, relative to men, women are substantially more likely to make unforced errors at crucial junctures of the match. Data on serve speed, on first serve percentages and on rally length suggest that women play a more conservative and less aggressive strategy as points become more important. I present a simple game-theoretic model that shows that a less aggressive strategy may be a player’s best response to an increase in the intrinsic probability of making unforced errors.
