The Cambridge History of Postmodern Literature offers a comprehensive survey of the field, from its emergence in the mid-twentieth century to the present day. It offers an unparalleled examination of all facets of postmodern writing that helps readers to understand how fiction and poetry, literary criticism, feminist theory, mass media, and the visual and fine arts have characterized the historical development of postmodernism. Covering subjects from the Cold War and countercultures to the Latin American Boom and magic realism, this History traces the genealogy of a literary tradition while remaining grounded in current scholarship. It also presents new critical approaches to postmodern literature that will serve the needs of students and specialists alike. Written by a host of leading scholars, this History will not only engage readers in contemporary debates but also serve as a definitive reference for years to come

This book is a transnational study of how contemporary fiction writers from the United States and Canada to Nigeria to India to Dubai have conceptualized the emergent social spaces of the diverse corners of the neoliberal world system. Over the span of the past three to four decades, free market economic policies have been sold to or pushed upon every society on the globe in some way, shape, or form. The upshot of this has been a world system structured in terms of a vast shift of power and resources from government to private enterprise, dwindling civic life replaced by rising consumerism, an emerging oligarchic rentier class, large segments of population faced with meager material conditions of existence and few prospects of socio-economic mobility, and a looming sense of a near future dominated by further economic collapses and mounting social strife. This book analyses a wide cultural array of some of the most poignant narrative engagements with neoliberalism in its various localized manifestations throughout the world Acknowledgments -- 1. Introduction -- PART I: BROAD TRENDS -- 2. Contemporary North American Narrative Fiction and the Landscapes of Neoliberalism: The Explosion of Corporate Capitalism and the Spaces of the Fallen American Middle Class -- 3. Speculation, Social Conflict, and the Ethics of Untrammeled Accumulation in the American Neoliberal Financier Novel -- 4. Spatial Division, Bricolage Settlement, and Informal Economies in the Developing World Slum Novel -- PART II: CASES IN POINT -- 5. Psycho-Geographic Orientation in the Neoliberal City: Establishing and Contesting Place Identity in the Nascent Literature of Dubai -- 6. Sense of Place, Consumer Capitalism, and the Sexual Politics of Global Nomadism in the Popular Fiction of Dubai -- 7. The Spatial/Political-Economic Dynamics of the Theme Park in Contemporary Transatlantic Fiction -- 8. Conclusion: Humanistic Study in a Time of Nightmare Economics -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index.-

This book argues for a new reading of the political and ethical through the literatures of Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay from 1970-2000. Carlos Amador reads a series of examples from the last dictatorship and the current post-dictatorship period in the Southern Cone, including works by Augusto Roa Bastos, Roberto Bolaño, Ceferino Reato, Horacio Verbitsky, Nelly Richard, Diamela Eltit, and Willy Thayer, with the goal of uncovering the logic behind their conceptions of belonging and rejection. Focusing on theoretical concepts that make possible the formation of any and all communities, this study works towards a vision of literature as essential to the structure of ethics Introduction: Reading Ethics and Logics of Individuation in the Southern Cone -- Theorizing Art in Chile during Dictatorship:The Conditions for the Singular and the Specific in Cultural Debate -- The Cultural Politics of The Singular and Specific: Chile, Vanguardism, and The Body -- Yo, el Supremo as the Singular -- The Scilingo Effect and the Specified -- Roberto Bolaño's Specific Exiles -- Conclusion

This book traces the aesthetic of wonder from the romantic period through contemporary philosophy and literature, arguing for its relevance to ecological consciousness. Most ecocritical scholarship tends to overshadow discussions of wonder with the sublime, failing to treat these two aesthetic categories as distinct. As a result, contemporary scholarship has conflated wonder and the sublime and ultimately lost the nuances that these two concepts conjure for readers and thinkers. Economides illuminates important differences between these aesthetics, particularly their negotiation of issues relevant to gender-based and environmental politics. In turn, readers can utilize the concept of wonder as an open-ended, non-violent framework in contrast to the ethos of domination that often surrounds the sublime Introduction: Wonder, Nature and Romanticism’s Forgotten Way -- Chapter 1: Wonder and Romantic Ecology -- Chapter 2: Romanticism, Scientific Wonders, and the Technological Sublime -- Chapter 3: The Environmental Sublime and Ecological Melancholy -- Chapter 4: Wonder and Technē in an Age of Ecological Risk

Imagining Motherhood in Contemporary Irish and Caribbean Literature undertakes a comparative transnational reading to develop more expansive literary models of good mothering. Abigail L. Palko argues that Irish and Caribbean literary representations of non-normative mothering practices do not reflect transgressive or dangerous mothering but are rather cultural negotiations of the definition of a good mother. This original book demonstrates the sustained commitment to countering the dominant ideologies of maternal self-sacrifice foundational to both Irish and Caribbean nationalist rhetoric, offering instead the possibility of integrating maternal agency into an effective model of female citizenship Introduction: Embryonic Beginnings -- “A mother-of-sufferer”: Subversive Mothering in the Caribbean and Irish Traditions -- Part I: Rejecting Motherhood -- The Traumatized Not-Mother -- The Motherless Not-Mother -- Part II: Redefining Motherhood -- The Lesbian Daughter -- The Lesbian Mother -- Conclusion: “If you can’t trust me with choice, how can you trust me with a child?” -- Works Cited
