By exploring the force of aesthetic experience and the role of space, Mustafa Dikeç offers an understanding of politics based on apprehension and revelation. Dikeç's theory rests on a particular relationship between space and politics. Here, space is not the background for relations between things; rather, space implies a capacity for things to appear and exhibit relations of simultaneity and order. Space is a form of appearance and a mode of actuality, and its disruption is the sublime element in politics

    «Make Love Not War», «Soyez réalistes, demandez l’impossible», «Keine Macht für Niemanden», «We are the 99%» – durch die Geschichte der vergangenen Jahrzehnte zieht sich ein konstanter Strom von widerständigen Äusserungen und Praktiken im Hinblick auf die herrschenden Verhältnisse. Was von den Rändern der Gesellschaft in deren Mitte dringt, meist ungeordnet und unbändig, manchmal gewalttätig, selten kontrollierbar, bricht sich Bahn in Form eines Protestes. Dieser findet in (realen oder virtuellen) Räumen statt und wird von (ebenso realen und virtuellen) Körpern vollzogen. Die Räume und die Körper, auf die sich der Protest bezieht, sind jene der Politik und der Gesellschaft. Virtuos und kreativ bedient er sich der aktuellen Zeichen und Symbole, unterwandert und verwandelt sie, schafft neue Ästhetiken und Bedeutungen und öffnet so einen Raum, der sich der Kontrolle entzieht. Ironie, Subversion, Provokation sind ihm Mittel, um aus der Position der Machtlosigkeit dem kontrollierenden Herrschaftssystem kleine, aber spürbare Nadelstiche zu versetzen. Die Publikation Protest. präsentiert und reflektiert aktuelle und vergangene Formen von Protest und blickt aus verschiedensten Perspektiven auf die widerständischen Praxen marginalisierter Gemeinschaften. Sozial- und kulturgeschichtliche, soziologische und politologische Perspektiven spielen darin ebenso eine Rolle wie bildtheoretische, populärkulturelle oder kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze oder aktuelle Positionen aus den Künsten. Dabei werden insbesondere auch aktuelle Entwicklungen in den Blick genommen wie die Virtualisierung des Protestes, seine Wendung ins Fiktive oder seine Instrumentalisierung in der Politik von Machthabern jeglicher Couleur.

    2005 wurde das Holocaust-Mahnmal im Herzen Berlins der Öffentlichkeit über­geben. 60 Jahre nach 1945 hatte sich gegen mehrheitliche »Schlussstrich«- Forderungen mühsam ein weitgehender Konsens über die Notwendigkeit des öffentlichen Gedenkens entwickelt. Heute wird dieser von weit rechts infrage gestellt wie nie zuvor seit den 1950er Jahren. Dass die Erinnerung so umkämpft ist, hängt auch mit der NS-Ideologie und ihrer Verankerung in der deutschen Gesellschaft zusammen. Es war die quasireligiöse Faszination für eine neue Herrschaft nach den Krisen der Weimarer Republik, die große Teile der Bevölkerung zum Mitmachen bewegt hat – bis hin zum apokalyp­tischen Vernichtungskrieg. Was dieser Krieg für die Opfer bedeutet, zeigen Aussagen von Holocaust-Überlebenden, in denen ihre ganz besondere Erinnerung deutlich wird. »Eindringlich und anschaulich analysiert Hajo Funke den Nationalsozialismus. Indem er Adolf Hitler als gelehrigen Schüler des Komponisten Richard Wagner ausweist, zeigt er das NS-Regime als ein perfides, die Massen betörendes ›Gesamtkunstwerk‹. Denn es ging um eine politische Religion, die Religion einer Erlösung durch Massenmord – um, wie Saul Friedländer sagte, ›Erlösungsantisemitismus‹. Die Erinnerung an die dynamische Radikalisierung des Nationalsozialismus ist angesichts der Gefahren neuer faschistischer Bewegungen aktueller denn je.« (Micha Brumlik)

    «Make Love Not War», «Soyez réalistes, demandez l’impossible», «Keine Macht für Niemanden», «We are the 99%» – durch die Geschichte der vergangenen Jahrzehnte zieht sich ein konstanter Strom von widerständigen Äusserungen und Praktiken im Hinblick auf die herrschenden Verhältnisse. Was von den Rändern der Gesellschaft in deren Mitte dringt, meist ungeordnet und unbändig, manchmal gewalttätig, selten kontrollierbar, bricht sich Bahn in Form eines Protestes. Dieser findet in (realen oder virtuellen) Räumen statt und wird von (ebenso realen und virtuellen) Körpern vollzogen. Die Räume und die Körper, auf die sich der Protest bezieht, sind jene der Politik und der Gesellschaft. Virtuos und kreativ bedient er sich der aktuellen Zeichen und Symbole, unterwandert und verwandelt sie, schafft neue Ästhetiken und Bedeutungen und öffnet so einen Raum, der sich der Kontrolle entzieht. Ironie, Subversion, Provokation sind ihm Mittel, um aus der Position der Machtlosigkeit dem kontrollierenden Herrschaftssystem kleine, aber spürbare Nadelstiche zu versetzen. Die Publikation Protest. präsentiert und reflektiert aktuelle und vergangene Formen von Protest und blickt aus verschiedensten Perspektiven auf die widerständischen Praxen marginalisierter Gemeinschaften. Sozial- und kulturgeschichtliche, soziologische und politologische Perspektiven spielen darin ebenso eine Rolle wie bildtheoretische, populärkulturelle oder kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze oder aktuelle Positionen aus den Künsten. Dabei werden insbesondere auch aktuelle Entwicklungen in den Blick genommen wie die Virtualisierung des Protestes, seine Wendung ins Fiktive oder seine Instrumentalisierung in der Politik von Machthabern jeglicher Couleur.

    Public space is political space. When a work of public art is put up or taken down, it is an inherently political statement, and the work's aesthetics are inextricably entwined with its political valences. Democracy's openness allows public art to explore its values critically and to suggest new ones. However, it also facilitates artworks that can surreptitiously or fortuitously undermine democratic values. Today, as bigotry and authoritarianism are on the rise and democratic movements seek to combat them, as Confederate monuments fall and sculptures celebrating diversity rise, the struggle over the values enshrined in the public arena has taken on a new urgency. In this book, Fred Evans develops philosophical and political criteria for assessing how public art can respond to the fragility of democracy. He calls for considering such artworks as acts of citizenship, pointing to their capacity to resist autocratic tendencies and reveal new dimensions of democratic society. Through close considerations of Chicago's Millennium Park and New York's National September 11 Memorial, Evans shows how a wide range of artworks participate in democratic dialogues. A nuanced consideration of contemporary art, aesthetics, and political theory, this book is a timely and rigorous elucidation of how thoughtful public art can contribute to the flourishing of a democratic way of life
