Composed in early thirteenth-century Iberia, the Libro de Alexandre was Spain’s first vernacular version of the Romance of Alexander and the first poem in the corpus now known as the mester de clerecía. These learned works, written by clergy and connected with both school and court, were also tools for the articulation of sovereignty in an era of prolonged military and political expansion. In The Task of the Cleric, Simone Pinet considers the composition of the Libro de Alexandre in the context of cartography, political economy, and translation. Her discussion sheds light on how clerics perceived themselves and on the connections between literature and these other activities. Drawing on an extensive collection of early cartographic materials, much of it rarely considered in conjunction with the romance, Pinet offers an original and insightful view of the mester de clerecía and the changing role of knowledge and the clergy in thirteenth-century Iberia

In England in Europe, Elizabeth Tyler focuses on two histories: the Encomium Emmae Reginae, written for Emma the wife of the Æthelred II and Cnut, and The Life of King Edward, written for Edith the wife of Edward the Confessor. Tyler offers a bold literary and historical analysis of both texts and reveals how the two queens actively engaged in the patronage of history-writing and poetry to exercise their royal authority. Tyler’s innovative combination of attention to intertextuality and regard for social networks emphasizes the role of women at the centre of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman court literature. In doing so, she argues that both Emma and Edith’s negotiation of conquests and factionalism created powerful models of queenly patronage that were subsequently adopted by individuals such as Queen Margaret of Scotland, Countess Adela of Blois, Queen Edith/Matilda, and Queen Adeliza. England in Europe sheds new lighton the connections between English, French, and Flemish history-writing and poetry and illustrates the key role Anglo-Saxon literary culture played in European literature long after 1066

Boethius wrote 'The Consolation of Philosophy' as a prisoner condemned to death for treason, circumstances that are reflected in the themes and concerns of its evocative poetry and dialogue between the prisoner and his mentor, Lady Philosophy. This classic philosophical statement of late antiquity has had an enduring influence on Western thought. It is also the earliest example of what Rivkah Zim identifies as a distinctive and vitally important medium of literary resistance: writing in captivity by prisoners of conscience and persecuted minorities. This work reveals why the great contributors to this tradition of prison writing are among the most crucial figures in Western literature.

"Bringing together leading scholars from the USA, UK and Europe, this is the first substantial study of the seminal influence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau on British Romanticism. Reconsidering Rousseau's connection to canonical Romantic authors such as Wordsworth, Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and British Romanticism also explores his impact on a wide range of literature, including anti-Jacobin fiction, educational works, familiar essays, nature writing and political discourse. Convincingly demonstrating that the relationship between Rousseau's thought and British Romanticism goes beyond mere reception or influence to encompass complex forms of connection, transmission and appropriation, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and British Romanticism is a vital new contribution to scholarly understanding of British Romantic literature and its transnational contexts."-- Machine generated contents note: -- Introduction -- 1. "Examines the work of Goethe, Kleist, and Schiller in the light of Hannah Arendt's concept of natality"-- "Figures of Natality reads metaphors and narratives of birth in the age of Goethe (1770-1832) as indicators of the new, the unexpected, and the revolutionary. Using Hannah Arendt's concept of natality, Joseph O'Neil argues that Goethe, Schiller, and Kleist see birth as challenging paradigms of Romanticism as well as of Enlightenment, resisting the assimilation of the political to economics, science, or morality. They choose instead to preserve the conflicts and tensions at the heart of social, political, and poetic revolutions. In a historical reading, these tensions evolve from the idea of revolution as Arendt reads it in British North America to the social and economic questions that shape the French Revolution and from there to the question of the German nation. Alongside this geopolitical evolution, the ways of representing the political change, too, moving from the new as revolutionary eruption to economic metaphors of birth. More pressing still is the question of revolutionary subjectivity and political agency, and Goethe, Kleist, and Schiller have an answer that is remarkably close to that of Walter Benjamin, as that "secret index" through which each past age is "pointed toward redemption."

Why do tyrants - of all people - often have poetic aspirations? Where do terror and prose meet? This book contains nine case studies that compare the cultural history of totalitarian regimes. The essays focus not on the arts, literature or architecture but on the phenomenon that many of history's great despots considered themselves talented writers. By studying the artistic ambitions of Nero, Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler, Mao Zedong, Kim Il-sung, Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Saparmurat Niyazov and Radovan Karadzic, the authors explore the complicated relationship between poetry and political violence Cover; Title page; Copyright page; Table of Contents; Introduction ALBRECHT KOSCHORKE AND KONSTANTIN KAMINSKIJ; The Tyrant with His Back to the Wall: Neroâ#x80;#x99;s Artistic Self-Expansion (ULRICH GOTTER); Benito Mussolini: â#x80;#x9C;Babeuf â#x80;#x9D; (1902); Poetry and Tyranny: The Case of Benito Mussolini (RICHARD JAMES BOON BOSWORTH); Joseph Stalin: â#x80;#x9C;Over This Landâ#x80;#x9D; (1895); Stalinâ#x80;#x99;s Writing: From the Romantic Poetry of the Futuret o the Socialist Realist Prose of the Past (EVGENY DOBRENKO); Adolf Hitler: Excerpt from Mein Kampf (1924) Ideology in Execution: On Hitlerâ#x80;#x99;s Mein Kampf (ALBRECHT KOSCHORKE)Kim Il-sung: â#x80;#x9C;Poem Dedicated to Comrade Kim Jong-il on His 50th Birthdayâ#x80;#x9D; (1992); Dead Fatherâ#x80;#x99;s Living Body: Kim Il-sungâ#x80;#x99;s Seed Theory and North Korean Arts (SUK-YOUNG KIM); Mao Zedong: â#x80;#x9C;Snowâ#x80;#x9D; (1936); Mao Zedongâ#x80;#x99;s Poetry: Form as Statement (KARL-HEINZ POHL); Muammar al-Gaddafi: Excerpt from â#x80;#x9C;Escape to Hellâ#x80;#x9D; (1993); A Poor Despot Descends to Hell: On the Writing and Thinking Styles of Muammar al-Gaddafi (HEINER LOHMANN); Saddam Hussein: â#x80;#x9C;Unbind Itâ#x80;#x9D; (2007) The Principle of Single-Handed Tyranny: On Saddam Husseinâ#x80;#x99;s Literary Works (BURKHARD MÃ#x9C;LLER)Saparmyrat Niyazov: â#x80;#x9C;You Are Turkmenâ#x80;#x9D; (2001); Saparmyrat Niyazovâ#x80;#x99;s Ruhnama: The Invention of Turkmenistan (RICCARDO NICOLOSI); Radovan KaradÅℓiÄ#x87;: â#x80;#x9C;Sarajevoâ#x80;#x9D; (1971); â#x80;#x9C;Nothing Is Forbidden in My Faithâ#x80;#x9D;: The Metamorphoses of Radovan KaradÅℓiÄ#x87; (SLAVOJ ÅưIÅưEK); List of Contributors; Back cover
