"Leisured Resistance examines the varied ways in which cultured Roman aristocrats, of very different periods, used their country estates as a political and literary tool. While for some the villas were retreats in which to compose literature and to escape from politics, others adapted this same tradition of cultured otium (or deliberate retirement from everyday politics) to present radical and competing visions of society and literature alike. Examining in-depth sources from both prose and verse from the time of Cicero to the last centuries of the Roman Empire in the West, the title demonstrates how the traditional image of the Roman aristocrat on his country estate was politically and socially very flexible: allowing authors, as times and circumstances changed, to present themselves or their patrons and friends as being in retreat from politics, or alternatively, as providing a focus for political opposition through the deliberate embracing of cultural values and schools of philosophy that offered resistance to prevailing political orthodoxy. The title ends by exploring how this tradition was adapted in the greatly changed world of the barbarian-ruled kingdoms that replaced direct Roman rule in Gaul in the fifth and sixth centuries"--

The concept of "postmigration" has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of "postmigration" and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

Klappentext: "In 1945, the Soviet Union annexed the East Prussian city of Königsberg, later renaming it Kaliningrad. Left in ruins by the war, the home of Immanuel Kant became a Russian city, a source of historical and cultural fascination for settlers, former inhabitants, visitors and observers alike. New settlers replaced the German population in the years that followed. This book looks at three aspects of Kaliningrad's relationship to the memory of Königsberg through cultural and literary sources and visual representations. First, it addresses the symbolism of Königsberg as a memory site in German culture and nostalgia for the city after 1945. Second, it discusses imagined and satirical literary-cultural adaptations and deconstructions of the idea of 'Kant and Königsberg' during the Cold War and afterwards. Third, it explores and reflects on discourses of memory, history and nostalgia in representations of the city by poets, photographers and filmmakers visiting Kaliningrad from the 1960s onwards. The book provides an introduction to the memory debates relating to Königsberg-Kaliningrad, as well as new critical readings of literary texts, films and photographic works"--

"Narrating War in Peace offers a holistic analysis of how the representation of the Spanish Civil War has evolved in several prominent cultural artifacts during Spanish democracy. It interprets the wider philosophical changes reflected in the changing conceptions of Spain's past conflict"-- "Through case studies of four prominent cultural products, this book takes a longitudinal approach to the influence and conceptualization of the Civil War in democratic Spain. Stafford uses Agustí Centelles' photographs; Jaime Camino's documentary films La vieja memoria (1977) and Los niños de Rusia (2001); Antonio Munoz Molina's fiction, especially La noche de los tiempos (2009); and Picasso's Guernica (1937) to explore the questions: What sort of stories were told about the war in cultural production during the transition to democracy? How have these narratives morphed in the twenty-first century in light of the polemics about historical memory? The cultural memory of the Spanish Civil War has shifted from representations of hero to victim, from ideology to affect, and finally, from trauma to identification through connection with the past"--

This book examines the complex ways in which a literary culture has been created and sustained within the Cuban Revolution. Based on the insights gained from original interviews with over 100 participants and sustained documentary research, it offers new perspectives and challenges long-held orthodoxies regarding the place of literature in the Cuban Revolution. By departing from the conventional focus on individual texts and authors to instead examine the actors, processes and spaces (writing, regulation, publishing, promotion and reading) through which literature has operated inside Cuba since 1959, and thus situates literary culture within the broader revolutionary context of nation-building. It traces the development of literary culture from the first days of the Revolution through to the economic crisis of the 1990s, revealing the debates and tensions but also the continuity of vision which has underlined the production and circulation of literature on the island. Combining historical and theoretical approaches with more detailed case studies, it explores Cuban literary culture through a conceptual framework which identifies the unique and complex patterns of policy and practice within the Revolution and applies them to three particular contemporary phenomena writing workshops, the Havana Book Festival, and the publishing infrastructure which demonstrate the continuing centrality of literary culture within the Cuban Revolution. The book is of interest to students and researchers working within Latin American Studies, those studying Cuba or other revolutionary contexts in Latin America, as well as those working in Cultural Studies, and lay readers with an interest in the Cuban Revolution Based on over 100 interviews with a wide range of actors involved in the structures and processes that produce, regulate, promote and consume literature on the island, the book breaks new ground by going beyond the conventional approach (the study of individual authors and texts) and by going beyond the canon of texts known outside Cuba. - This book examines the complex ways in which a literary culture has been created and sustained within the Cuban Revolution. Fragments of Revolution examines the interplay between French cultural production and the revolutionary activity in the century of unprecedented turbulence from the Revolution of 1789 to the anarchist interventions of the 1890s. Drawing on the disciplines of history, literary criticism, art history, and critical theory, the articles in this volume investigate the vexed representation of the revolutionary political agendas in "texts" that include not only prose narrative, newspapers, and political oratory, but also images, calendars, acts of vandalism, and terrorist bombings.
