Framing Pieces takes as its starting point the premise that the frames of modern art - the notes, marginalia, critical essays, and longer prose pieces with which James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Ezra Pound surrounded their texts - perform complex aesthetic and socio-political work. John Whittier-Ferguson discusses a variety of texts and contexts, including Finnegan's Wake, A Room of One's Own, The Pargiters, Three Guineas, and Pound's prose and poetry from the 1930s. He argues that the study of twentieth-century apparatus is crucial to the comprehension of the text it brackets and of the self-conscious, self-promoting, and self-elucidating and obscuring nature of the moderns gathered in this book. Whittier-Ferguson introduces his inquiry with a discussion of the paradigmatic instance of the modernist apparatus, Eliot's notes to The Waste Land. From there, he leads his readers into an exploration of questions central to the study of modernism today. He considers the political inflections of Modernist texts and traces the uncertain domain of the avant-garde. Further, Whittier-Ferguson determines the means by which writers make claims to different forms of cultural authority and demonstrates the ways an author's designs are themselves ultimately framed by historical forces that resist all designing. Turning his readers' attention to the margins of canonical modernism, Whittier-Ferguson newly illuminates authors and texts central to an understanding of twentieth-century art and culture.

Melville has long been regarded as an author of raw genius who knew, or cared, little about the art of the novel, and even harbored hostility toward its conventions. In The Weaver-God, He Weaves, Christopher Sten sets out to correct this widespread view, showing not only what Melville knew about the novelist's craft but how he appropriated and transformed a whole series of distinct genres: Typee is presented in the context of the popular romance, with its paired themes of sex and violence; Omoo is viewed in the framework of early Spanish and later French examples of the picaresque novel; and Mardi is seen as an instance of the once widely popular genre of the imaginary voyage. Sten also reveals how Melville radically transformed certain existing genres - the epic novel in Moby-Dick and the historical novel in Israel Potter - or forged profound new directions for genres still in their early stages - the psychological novel in Pierre and the experimental novel in The Confidence-Man. Sten speculates that it is because Melville was so idiosyncratic and inventive that so few critics have understood his close relationship to the various novelistic forms.

Why care about poetic form and its intricacies, other than in nostalgia for a bygone era of criticism? The purpose of this book is to refresh today this care for criticism, applying a historically aware formalist reading to poetic form in Romanticism and showing how in theory and practice Romantic writers addressed, debated, tested, and contested fundamental questions about what is at stake in the poetic forming of language. In the process, it suggests the importance of these conflicted inquiries for contemporary critical discussion and demonstrates the pleasures of attending to the complex changes of form in poetic writing.

In this breakthrough study, William Richey examines the mind of one of the most ambitious poet-thinkers of the Romantic era. Offering a new and stimulating survey that shows William Blake's aesthetic thought moving through "a sequence of sharp and sudden ruptures," Blake's Altering Aesthetic argues that Blake's aesthetic theory and practice were far more rooted in the specific circumstances of their historical moment than has generally been recognized Focusing on Blake's shifting attitudes toward the classical and the Gothic, Richey approaches the poet from a fresh angle, claiming that no single aesthetic philosophy applies uniformly throughout Blake's career. Rather, the Blake that Richey traces is a highly self-critical individual who is constantly repudiating his once deeply held convictions and inverting his former positions. Thus, instead of seeing Blake's later anticlassicism as a natural or inevitable outgrowth of his youthful beliefs, Richey argues convincingly that the changes in his theory and practice derived from specific social, political, and biographical conditions that caused his thinking to veer in unpredictable and often surprising directions

The Poetics of English Nationhood is a study of the formation of English national identity during the early modern period. Claire McEachern argues for the role of Reformation religious culture in the shaping of a Tudor-Stuart nation, and examines its presence in the writings of Spenser, Shakespeare, and Drayton. She shows how in their work the concept of nationality is always fluid; it crucially depends on a sense of intimacy that seeps across and above hierarchies and boundaries. McEachern shows how different kinds of language - literary, exegetical, parliamentary - personify power, thereby sealing the intimacy which binds the nation as an imagined community. The representation of faith, motherland, and crown in Tudor-Stuart texts, she argues, continually personified English political institutions, promoting both social order and collective unity By focusing on the rhetorical forms of cultural unity in the Reformation era, McEachern traces a profound shift from a monarchically defined Englishness to a system based within the cultural institution of the common law
