    The volume contains an edition of c. 1,300 ostraca excavated in Abu Mina, Egypt, under the directorship of Peter Grossmann. Most of these ostraca comprise a partially surviving record of the pickings of grapes and of wine deliveries in the first half of the seventh century AD, before the Arab conquest in 642. Also, a small number contains some Christian texts, writings on pots or flasks, designs and writing exercises. They provide information on the community, the economical and agricultural activities, the prosopography and onomastics of this pilgrimage centre. This volume will be of interest

    Conservée sur un support matériel plus ou moins périssable, la lettre privée assure la communication entre des individus et des groupes qui partagent les mêmes intérêts : famille, amis et partenaires. Elle est censée être lue par le destinataire seul ou par un petit cercle et avoir un impact sur ces derniers. Les supports sont variés (papyrus, ostraka, tablettes en terre crue, tablettes de bois, plomb) et couvrent toute la Méditerranée antique : l'Orient mésopotamien, assyrien et perse, le monde grec intégrant les espaces touchés par la colonisation archaïque et par la conquête d'Alexandre le Grand, Rome et son empire. Si l'échelle est vaste d'un point de vue spatial et temporel, le but de ce volume est de proposer une perspective comparatiste concernant l'emploi des supports mais aussi les pratiques que ces espaces se partageaient. Il convient de mettre en avant la forme et l'évolution du formulaire de la lettre, pour lequel des transferts ont été opérés d'un espace à l'autre, mais aussi les préoccupations des milieux sociaux qui pratiquaient la correspondance. Les lettres qui ont retenu notre attention sont échangées entre de parfaits inconnus de l'histoire, dévoilant leurs réseaux parfois étendus. Ce volume se propose de jeter une nouvelle lumière sur les sociétés antiques, sous un angle particulier qui est celui de la correspondance mais dans une perspective d'histoire sociale, économique et culturelle, incluant les analyses de genre et la micro-histoire

    The volume contains an edition of c. 1,300 ostraca excavated in Abu Mina, Egypt, under the directorship of Peter Grossmann. Most of these ostraca comprise a partially surviving record of the pickings of grapes and of wine deliveries in the first half of the seventh century AD, before the Arab conquest in 642. Also, a small number contains some Christian texts, writings on pots or flasks, designs and writing exercises. They provide information on the community, the economical and agricultural activities, the prosopography and onomastics of this pilgrimage centre. This volume will be of interest

    Conservée sur un support matériel plus ou moins périssable, la lettre privée assure la communication entre des individus et des groupes qui partagent les mêmes intérêts : famille, amis et partenaires. Elle est censée être lue par le destinataire seul ou par un petit cercle et avoir un impact sur ces derniers. Les supports sont variés (papyrus, ostraka, tablettes en terre crue, tablettes de bois, plomb) et couvrent toute la Méditerranée antique : l'Orient mésopotamien, assyrien et perse, le monde grec intégrant les espaces touchés par la colonisation archaïque et par la conquête d'Alexandre le Grand, Rome et son empire. Si l'échelle est vaste d'un point de vue spatial et temporel, le but de ce volume est de proposer une perspective comparatiste concernant l'emploi des supports mais aussi les pratiques que ces espaces se partageaient. Il convient de mettre en avant la forme et l'évolution du formulaire de la lettre, pour lequel des transferts ont été opérés d'un espace à l'autre, mais aussi les préoccupations des milieux sociaux qui pratiquaient la correspondance. Les lettres qui ont retenu notre attention sont échangées entre de parfaits inconnus de l'histoire, dévoilant leurs réseaux parfois étendus. Ce volume se propose de jeter une nouvelle lumière sur les sociétés antiques, sous un angle particulier qui est celui de la correspondance mais dans une perspective d'histoire sociale, économique et culturelle, incluant les analyses de genre et la micro-histoire
