Priya Wadhera's 'Original Copies in Perec and Warhol' is the first book to explore striking similarities between the works of the author and the artist. Copies abound in Perec's oeuvre, where pastiches, paintings, and intertexts dialogue with the history of copying in the past and present, in literature and in art. Both here and in Warhol's works, the source of the copies is difficult to pinpoint, shrouded in a fog linked to death. This remarkable parallel provides insight into their widely-admired works and a postmodern aesthetic where the original is stripped of its value and the copy reigns supreme. In this study of the original and the copy, Wadhera illuminates the nature of art itself

The six essays in Purloined Letters represent thirty years of careful meditation on the theory of a national literaturespecifically, "American" literature - and constitute the culminating work of the late Joseph N. Riddel's career. It was in The Inverted Bell, his groundbreaking study of William Carlos Williams and American modernism, that Riddel began to work at composing a history of American poetics in terms of "beginnings." The essays collected here (three of them never before published) carry the question of modernism back into classic nineteenth-century American literature - the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, William James, and others - exploring Riddel's cardinal "American" oppositions: creation versus representation, poetry versus criticism, geography versus "ego-graphy." In Riddel's view, "American" literature belongs to a conceptual order, not to a historical period or geographical locale. "American literature," he believes, is a product of standard canonization procedures, even though, ironically, American writing questions the very process of canonization - the assumptions about origin, influence, and destiny that inform any canon. Riddel's interpretations of Emerson, Poe, and the others render those assumptions problematic and offer us an understanding of our literature and history that differs from the various suggestions of F. O. Matthiessen, Richard Chase, and other prominent American scholars Riddel begins by recognizing the American writer's double bind: Such a writer must first invent that which can then be represented. He must invent and not discover, perform and not imitate. He must deal with the question of "translation" - the need for a New World language that escapes Old World history. Hence, "America" as projected in American literature is not so much a history of what occurred as a dream to be arrived at. How Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, Henry Adams, and other nineteenth-century American writers explore their dilemma is the subject of these trenchant essays. Purloined Letters offers an alternative interpretation of the canon, a curious but highly significant philosophical twist upon such standard notions as the "American Adam," the "American Renaissance," and "Virgin Land.

But is it original? The question, on which so much of writing stakes its claim to greatness, may be more interesting than the answer. In this provocative book, Francoise Meltzer takes a subtle and incisive look at the anxiety of origins at the heart of the literary enterprise. Using four case studies, Meltzer reveals the shaky status of originality as a founding principle of the critical establishment Three dreams were the starting point for Descartes's famous methode. In the short shrift given to these nightly visions by the author of The Interpretation of Dreams, Meltzer sees a symptom of Freud's overwhelming anxiety about originality and authorship, an obsession that mirrors Descartes's own fear of plagiarism. Turning next to the Holocaust poet Paul Celan, who was actually accused of plagiarism by another poet's widow, Meltzer takes us through the minority discourse on the European Jew - in which "the Jew" is seen as having no homeland except for the text - to show us why such an accusation was so devastating for Celan. The question of originality becomes even trickier in the case of Colette, whose early books were published under her husband Willy's name. Scrutinizing Willy's elaborate promotion of himself as a serious writer, unlike his "lazy" wife, Meltzer questions our investment in the working notion of a writer, and in the way that notion is gendered Finally she considers the case of Walter Benjamin, whose early interpreters, especially Hannah Arendt and Theodor Adorno, challenged his seriousness and originality by alluding to his supposed 'feminine' qualities of vagabondage and sloth. In each of these cases, Meltzer shows how a threat to a writer's status as creator betrays the larger fraud of the originality myth itself

"Over the last twenty five years, scholarship on Early Modern women writers has produced editions and criticisms, both on various groups and individual authors. The work on Mary Wroth has been particularly impressive at integrating her poetry, prose and drama into the canon. This in turn has led to comparative studies that link Wroth to a number of male and female writers, including of course, William Shakespeare. At the same time no single volume has attempted a comprehensive comparative analysis. This book sets out to explore the ways in which Wroth negotiated the discourses that are embedded in the Shakespearean canon in order to develop an understanding of her oeuvre based, not on influence and imitation, but on difference, originality and innovation"-- Over the last twenty-five years scholarship on Early Modern women writers has produced editions and criticisms both on various groups and individual authors. The work on Mary Wroth has been particularly impressive at integrating her poetry, prose, and drama into the canon. This in turn has led to comparative studies that link Wroth to a number of male and female writers, including of course, William Shakespeare.0This book sets out to explore the ways in which Wroth negotiated the discourses that are embedded in the Shakespearean canon in order to develop an understanding of her oeuvre, based not on influence and imitation, but on difference, originality, and innovation. Because of its innovative comparative approach, this volume will provide fresh perspectives on two of the most important writers in early modern literature. Featuring ten chapters from an international selection of contributors, this book is an important reference for scholars of Early Modern women writers and Shakespeare

William Faulkner seems to have sprung a full-blown genius from a remote part of the American South. Yet Faulkner spent much of his life striving to emulate and overshadow - both as a writer and as a person - his great-grandfather and namesake, Colonel William Falkner, a dueling, railroad-building, soldiering figure who loomed not just as a legend in Faulkner's family and community but also as a literary forebear, a published novelist, travel writer, and poet. Looking back on his career, Faulkner would mention that early on he had ridden his great-grandfather's coattails, but by the mid-twentieth century it was clear that it was the great-grandson who was leading the literary world: readers, young writers of fiction, and literary critics were following him as one who had found extraordinary ways to capture and express the most challenging aspects of modern life. Taylor Hagood's book centers on the concept of following to examine how Faulkner's work has been analyzed, elucidated, and promoted by a massive body of scholarly work spanning over seven decades. It narrates the development of Faulkner criticism, taking as its premise the idea that Faulkner forges a fiery path through modernism and into postmodernism that literary critics have been constantly rushing to follow.

Taylor Hagood is Associate Professor of English at Florida Atlantic University. His book Faulkner: Writer of Disability (LSU Press, 2014) won the C. Hugh Holman Award for Best Book in Southern Literary Studies in 2015.

Introduction -- Genius in the hinterland -- From new critical heights to structural and archival groundings -- The grip of theory -- Global Faulkner -- Forecast: future trends in Faulkner scholarship -- Works by William Faulkner "William Faulkner seems to have sprung a full-blown genius from a remote part of the American South. Yet Faulkner spent much of his life striving to emulate and overshadow--both as a writer and as a person--his great-grandfather and namesake, Colonel William Falkner, a dueling, railroad-building, soldiering figure who loomed not just as a legend in Faulkner's family and community but also as a literary forebear, a published novelist, travel writer, and poet. Looking back on his career, Faulkner would mention that early on he had ridden his great-grandfather's coattails, but by the mid twentieth century it was clear that it was the great-grandson who was leading the literary world: readers, young writers of fiction, and literary critics were following him as one who had found extraordinary ways to capture and express the most challenging aspects of modern life. Taylor Hagood's book centers on the concept of following to examine how Faulkner's work has been analyzed, elucidated, and promoted by a massive body of scholarly work spanning over seven decades. It narrates the development of Faulkner criticism, taking as its premise the idea that Faulkner forges a fiery path through modernism and into postmodernism that literary critics have been constantly rushing to follow" --

Thomas Bailey Aldrich and the End of Tradition -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index An aesthetic of unoriginality shaped literary style and reader taste for decades of the nineteenth century. While critics in the twentieth century and beyond have upheld originality and innovation as essential characteristics of literary achievement, they were not features particularly prized by earlier American audiences, Claudia Stokes contends. On the contrary, readers were taught to value familiarity, traditionalism, and regularity. Literary originality was often seen as a mark of vulgar sensationalism and poor quality. In Old Style Stokes offers the first dedicated study of a forgotten nineteenth-century aesthetic, explicating the forms, practices, conventions, and uses of unoriginality. She focuses in particular on the second quarter of the century, when improvements in printing and distribution caused literary markets to become flooded with new material, and longstanding reading practices came under threat. As readers began to prefer novelty to traditional forms, advocates openly extolled unoriginality in an effort to preserve the old literary ways. Old Style examines this era of significant literary change, during which a once-dominant aesthetic started to give way to modern preferences. If writing in the old style came to be associated with elite conservatism—a linkage that contributed to its decline in the twentieth century—it also, paradoxically provided marginalized writers—people of color, white women, and members of the working class—the literary credentials they needed to enter print. Writing in the old style could affirm an aspiring author's training, command of convention, and respectability. In dismissing unoriginality as the literary purview of the untalented or unambitious, Stokes cautions, we risk overlooking something of vital importance to generations of American writers and readers
