    A bold reconception of ancient Greek drama by one of the most brilliant and original classical scholars of his generationWhen John Winkler died in 1990, he left an unpublished manuscript containing a highly original interpretation of the development and meaning of ancient Greek drama. Rehearsals of Manhood makes this groundbreaking work available for the first time, presenting an entirely novel picture of Greek tragedy and a vivid portrait of the cultural poetics of Athenian manhood.Ancient Athens was a military conclave as well as an urban capital, and male citizens were expected to embody the ideal of the Athenian citizen-soldier. Winkler understands Attic drama as a secular manhood ritual, a collaborative aesthetic and civic enterprise focused on the initiation of boys into manhood and the training, testing, and representation of young male warriors. Past efforts to discover the origins and development of Greek tragedy have largely treated drama as a literary genre, isolating it from other Athenian social practices. Winkler returns Greek tragedy to its social context, showing how it was one among many forms of display and performance cultivated by elite males in ancient Greece.The final work of a celebrated classical scholar, Rehearsals of Manhood highlights the civic function of the dramatic festivals at classical Athens as occasions for the examination and representation of boys on the verge of manhood, and offers a fresh explanation of how dramatic performance fit into the social life and gender politics of the Athenian state

    Der Plutos gilt gemeinhin als der matte Schlussstein der glanzvollen Karriere des Aristophanes und überhaupt einer Gattung, die ihre Blütezeit lange hinter sich gelassen hat. Die vorliegende Arbeit revidiert dieses negative Urteil. Durch eine umfangreiche Analyse der historischen und kulturellen Hintergründe des Stückes weist sie nach, dass das im Plutos verhandelte Thema des Geldes für das athenische Publikum des Jahres 388 v. Chr. von höchster Aktualität war. Unter Rückgriff auf moderne Theorien nimmt sie die Komik des Stückes in den Blick und analysiert diese nicht nur kleinschrittig Szene für Szene, sondern auch mit Blick auf das Ganze. Herausgearbeitet wird ein komischer Plot, der nicht nur dem Plutos, sondern jeder Komödie des Aristophanes eignet. Die Wirkungsweise der Komik in der Alten Komödie wird somit grundsätzlich neu beschrieben und das Verständnis der Gattung in dieser Hinsicht auf ein neues Fundament gestellt. Die Neuinterpretation des Plutos erweist das Stück als unmittelbare Zeitkritik ganz in der Tradition der Alten Komödie des 5. Jahrhunderts Plutos is generally regarded as the dull capstone of Aristophanes' illustrious career and of a genre that has long since left its heyday behind. The present work revises this negative judgement. Through a comprehensive analysis of the historical and cultural background of the play, it demonstrates that the theme of money dealt with in Plutos was highly topical for the Athenian audience of 388 BC. Drawing on modern theories, the author examines the comedy of the play and analyses it not only scene by scene, but also with a view to the whole. A comic plot is worked out that is not only characteristic of Pluto, but of every comedy by Aristophanes. The mode of action of comedy in Old Comedy is thus described in a fundamentally new way and the understanding of the genre in this respect is placed on a new foundation. The reinterpretation of Pluto proves the play to be a direct critique of the times in the tradition of 5th century Old Comedy
