This volume considers the reception in the early modern period of four popular medieval myths of nationhood - the legends of Brutus, Albina, Scota and Arthur - tracing their intertwined literary and historiographical afterlives. The book thus speaks to several connected areas and is timely on a number of fronts: its dialogue with current investigations into early modern historiography and the period's relationship to its past, its engagement with pressing issues in identity and gender studies, and its analysis of the formation of British national origin stories at a time when modern Britain is seriously considering its own future as a nation

"Celtic and Gothic : both words refer today to both ancient tribes and modern styles. 'Celtic' is associated with harp music, native knitwear, and spirituality; 'Gothic' with medieval cathedrals, rock bands, and horror fiction. The eleven essays collected together here chart some of the curious and unexpected ways in which the Celts and the Goths were appropriated and reinvented in Britain and other European countries through the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries--becoming not just mythologised races, but lending their names to abstract principles and entire value systems. Contributed by experts in literature, archaeology, history, and Celtic studies, the essays range from broad surveys to specific case-studies, and together demonstrate the complicated interplay that has always existed between 'Celticism' and 'Gothicism'. Myths determine the way cultures understand themselves. The papers in this volume examine culturally specific myths in Britain and the German-speaking world, and compare approaches to the theory of myth, together with the ways in which mythological formations operate in literature, aesthetics and politics? with a focus on the period around 1800. They enquire into the consequences of myth-oriented discourses for the way in which these two cultures understand each other, and in this way make a significant contribution to a more profound approach to intercultural research

"Arthurian myth" is a frequently used term. But what is a 'myth'? The current discussion of the term in the field of German studies is here opened up to interdisciplinary consideration. Focusing on Arthurian literature, the volume considers which interpretation of 'myth' is appropriate to which phenomena. Both content-related and structural definitions of myth are examined, with particular scrutiny of the mythic substrate in Arthurian romances and the various individual approaches to mythical narrative forms. It becomes clear that no definition of 'myth' is possible beyond one pertaining to th
