"Paik's virtual archive contemplates the identity of multimedia artworks by reconsidering the role of conservation in our understanding of what the artwork is and how it functions within and beyond a specific historical moment. Using examples by Nam June Paik (1932-2006), the hugely influential Korean American artist who is considered the progenitor of video art, the book explores the relation between the artworks' concept and material, theories of musical performance, performativity, and the Bergsonian concept of duration and the parts they play in the conceptualization of multimedia artworks. Hölling combines her astute assessment of artistic technologies with ideas from art theory, philosophy, and aesthetics to probe questions related to materials and materiality not just in the work on Paik, but in contemporary art in general. Ultimately, she proposes that it is on the basis of the archive--the physical and virtual realm that encompass all that is known about an artwork--that the identity and continuity of such artworks are created and sustained."--Provided by publisher Two works -- Conceptual and material aspects of media art -- Musical roots of performed and performative media -- Zen for film -- Changeability and multimedia art -- Time and conservation -- Heterotemporalities -- The material and the immaterial archive -- Archival implications -- Conclusion: the many archai of conservation and curation

"The beginning of the 20th century saw literary scholars from Russia positing a new definition for the nature of literature. Within the framework of Russian formalism, the term "literariness" was coined. The driving force behind this theoretical inquiry was the desire to identify literature--and art in general--as ways of revitalizing human perception, which had been numbed by the automatization of everyday life. The transformative power of "literariness" is made manifest in many media artworks by renowned artists such as Chantal Akerman, Mona Hatoum, Gary Hill, Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge, Nalini Malani, Bruce Nauman, Martha 4 Rosler, and Lawrence Weiner. These artists, much like the young Russian and German scholars of the 20th century, use literariness as a tool to analyze the aesthetics of spoken or written language within experimental film, video performance, moving image installations and many more media-based art forms. This volume uses as its foundation the Russian formalist school of literary theory, with the goal of extending these theories to include contemporary concepts in film and media studies, such as neoformalism, intermediality, remediation, and post-drama"-- Literariness and media art: theoretical framing -- Voice and script in media art -- Literary genres in media art -- Works of literature in media art

Sensuous affiliations: security, terror, and the queer calculus of the forever war -- Up in the air: US aerial power and the visual life of empire in the drone age -- On the skin: drone warfare, collateral damage, and the human terrain -- Empire's innards: conjuring 'warm data' in archives of US global military detention -- Palestine(s) in the sky: visionary aesthetics and queer cosmic utopias from the frontiers of US empire -- Scaling empire: insurgent aesthetics in the wilds of imperial decline?. "In Insurgent Aesthetics Ronak K. Kapadia theorizes the world-making power of contemporary art responses to US militarism in the Greater Middle East. He traces how new forms of remote killing, torture, confinement, and surveillance have created a distinctive post-9/11 infrastructure of racialized state violence. Linking these new forms of violence to the history of American imperialism and conquest, Kapadia shows how Arab, Muslim, and South Asian diasporic multimedia artists force a reckoning with the US War on Terror's violent destruction and its impacts on immigrant and refugee communities. Drawing on an eclectic range of visual, installation, and performance works, Kapadia reveals queer feminist decolonial critiques of the US security state that visualize subjugated histories of US militarism and make palpable what he terms "the sensorial life of empire." In this way, these artists forge new aesthetic and social alliances that sustain critical opposition to the global war machine and create alternative ways of knowing and feeling beyond the forever war"--

Lecturer in Didactics of artistic languages ??at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. It was formed between Arezzo, Milan and London
