"This book investigates the portrayal of nationalities and sexualities in British post-Second World War crime film and melodrama. By focusing on these genres, and looking at the concept of melodrama as an analytical tool apt for the analysis of both sexuality and nation, the book offers insight into the desires, fears, and anxieties of post-war culture. The problem of returning to 'normalcy' after the war is one of the recurring themes discussed; alienation from society, family, and the self were central issues for both women and men in the post-war years, and the book examines the anxieties surrounding these social changes in the films of the period. In particular, it explores heterosexuality and nationality as some of the most prominent frameworks for the construction of identities in our time; structures that, for all their centrality, are made invisible in our culture"-- History and myth -- "Bloody uncomfortable" : from war to post-war -- Inside, outside, and somewhere in-between : race and sexuality -- Melodramas in the post-war -- Identities and their theories -- "Lest we forget" : national memories and collective oblivions -- Male amnesiacs in Caravan and The October man -- Displaced trauma in Madonna of the Seven Moons and the Seventh veil -- "We'll need good citizens when this is over" -- Masculine horror and feminine melancholy in post-war Ealing : Dead of night and It always rains on Sunday -- Rebelling against normative temporality in The wicked lady and A matter of life and death -- Language and identity -- Pathological families and nationalisms in The blue lamp and Odd man out -- Making names in The long memory and The magic bow

Italian cinemas after the war were filled by audiences who had come to watch domestically-produced films of passion and pathos. These highly emotional and consciously theatrical melodramas posed moral questions with stylish flair, redefining popular ways of feeling about romance, family, gender, class, Catholicism, Italy, and feeling itself. The Operatic and the Everyday in Postwar Italian Film Melodrama argues for the centrality of melodrama to Italian culture. It uncovers a wealth of films rarely discussed before including family melodramas, the crime stories of neorealismo popolare and opera films, and provides interpretive frameworks that position them in wider debates on aesthetics and society. The book also considers the well-established topics of realism and arthouse auteurism, and re-thinks film history by investigating the presence of melodrama in neorealism and post-war modernism. It places film within its broader cultural context to trace the connections of canonical melodramatists like Visconti and Matarazzo to traditions of opera, the musical theatre of the sceneggiata, visual arts, and magazines. In so doing it seeks to capture the artistry and emotional experiences found within a truly popular form. Key Features * Connects less established areas of research such as popular neorealism to more well-known subjects such as domestic melodrama * Provides an analysis of cineopera or opera film * Helps to pioneer the area of popular Italian cinema * Contributes to both Italian Studies and Film Studies

This book deals with melodrama - the key cinematic form of post-war Italy. The commercial success and formal perfection of melodrama is central to the re-establishment of the post-war Italian film industry, ensuring cinema's position at the forefront of 20th century mass culture. Melodrama interacts with the well-documented genres of neorealist and art cinema are well documented but it is through melodrama that one can discover most about national culture in Italy at this time, understand film's relationship to popular habits and ideas, and draw the true history of cinema. It connects less established areas of research such as popular neorealism to more well-known subjects such as domestic melodrama. It provides an analysis of cineopera or opera film. It helps to pioneer the area of popular Italian cinema. It contributes to both Italian Studies and Film

"Melodrama is one of the most important and most misunderstood categories in film studies. Challenging what have become conventional readings and attitudes toward melodrama, the contributors to this collection articulate new ways of thinking about melodrama that underscore its pervasiveness in global film culture, and its distinct ability to depict our understanding of the world. Melodrama Unbound includes essays by leading film scholars and historians to provide new approaches to melodrama that challenge some of the most persistent assumptions about the genre: that it is a Western form aimed at women and characterized by overwrought emotions. Thus, the essays examine how melodrama has traveled to and been transformed in new places such as India, China, Japan, and South America; the melodramatic aspects of action genres that appeal to both male and female audiences; how melodrama mixes with other genres such as romance, comedy, and even realism; how melodrama speaks to the realities of everyday life and dramatizes and expresses vital experiences for audiences; and the genre's relationship to history and modernity. Divided into two sections - "Melodrama's Transnational Histories" and "Aesthetics and Politics: Debates in Melodrama Theory" - the book will be a strong mix of film history and theory"-- Introduction / Christine Gledhill and Linda Williams -- Prologue : the reach of melodrama / Christine Gledhill -- Unbinding melodrama / Matthew Buckley -- The Passion of Christ and the melodramatic imagination / Richard Allen -- Boucicault in Bombay : global theatre circuits and domestic melodrama in the Parsi theatre / Kathryn Hansen -- Global melodrama and transmediality in turn of the century Japan / Hannah Airriess -- Transnational melodrama, Wenyi, and the orphan imagination / Zhen Xhang -- Performing/acting melodrama / David Mayer and Helen Day-Mayer -- Melodrama and the making of Hollywood / Hilary A. Hallett -- Modernising melodrama : the petrified forest on American stage and screen (1935-1936) / Martin Shingler -- One suffers but one learns (melodrama and the rules of lack of limits) / Carlos Monsiváis ; trans. "Female Narratives in Nollywood Melodramas investigates the role of women in nine Nollywood melodramas with attention to the changing landscape of filmmaking and film viewing. By incorporating Black feminist, audience reception, social identity, and cultivation theories, Johnson and Culverson provide insight into how identities for West African women are created and recreated through the broad interplay of Nollywood film viewing on social and individual levels. This book addresses how Nollywood is a product and contributor to evolving processes of globalization."-- Introduction -- Alternative frames for viewing and thinking about Nollywood films -- The women of Nollywood: suffering and agency -- Differential access to Nollywood films -- Female directors and producers -- Concluding thoughts
