Miracle accounts provide a window into the views and conceptions of the laity, the uneducated, women, and even children, whose voices are mostly missing from other types of sources. They are not, however, simple to use. This volume offers a methodological insight into the medieval world of the miraculous. Consisting of 15 cutting-edge articles by leading scholars in the field, it provides versatile approaches to the origins, methods, and recording techniques of various types of miracle narratives. It offers fascinating case studies from across Europe, which show how miracle accounts can be used as a source for various topics such as lived religion, healing, protection, and family and gender. Contributors are Nicole Archambeau, Leigh Ann Craig, Ildikó Csepregi, Jussi Hanska, Emilia Jamroziak, Sari Katajala-Peltomaa, Jenni Kuuliala, Iona McCleery, Jyrki Nissi, Roberto Paciocco, Donald S. Prudlo, Marika Räsänen, Jonas Van Mulder, and Louise Elizabeth Wilson

During and after the Carolingian conquests of the 8th century in Italy and the subsequent permeation of these regions a number of persons crossed the Alps into Italy, some of which received wordly or eccesiastical office or found a new place to live in one form or another. The sources pertaining to these processes have been reevaluated using different qualitive and quantitive methods. In specific social interactions, thus the combined result of these analyses, ethnic categorisations and even possible migration histories turn out to be far less prominent than the actors' involvement and cooperation with the ruler on the one hand or their position within local dynamics of social relationships within the landed and documented elites. From this research there are different data repositories documented here, among these a concordance of all charters from Lucca, Tuscany, spanning the 7th to 9th centuries, including information on archives and modern editions, as well as data and analyses from linguistic statistical research into the use of the keyword 'Francus' in large corpora.

How did the life course, with all its biological, social and cultural aspects, influence the lives, writings and art of the inhabitants of early medieval England? This volume explores how phases of human life such as childhood, puberty, and old age were identified, characterized and related in contemporary sources, as well as how nonhuman life courses were constructed. The multi-disciplinary contributions range from analyses of age vocabulary to studies of medicine, name-giving practices, theology, Old English poetry, and material culture. Combined, these cultural-historical perspectives reveal how the concept and experience of the life course shaped attitudes in early medieval England. Contributors are Jo Appleby, Debby Banham, Darren Barber, Caroline R. Batten, James Chetwood, Katherine Cross, Amy Faulkner, Jacqueline Fay, Elaine Flowers, Daria Izdebska, Gale R. Owen-Crocker, Thijs Porck, and Harriet Soper

Contents -- Abbreviations -- Abstract -- Keywords -- Introduction -- 1 Attachment Theory and Its Application to Historical Material -- 2 Case Studies from Medieval England -- Conclusions -- Bibliography. This book brings together the disciplines of history and psychology. It is the first study to apply attachment theory to self-narratives of the past, namely examples of life-writing (letters and proto-autobiographies) from medieval England, written in broad religious contexts. It examines whether God could appear as an adequate attachment figure in times of high mortality and often inadequate childrearing practices, and whether the emphasis on God's proximity to believers benefited their psychological reorganisation. The main method of enquiry is discourse analysis based on the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) coding
