Jan Bardsley traces how the maiko, long stigmatized as a victim of sexual exploitation, emerges in the 2000s as the chaste keeper of Kyoto's classical artistic traditions.     Mediennarrative haben einen entscheidenden Anteil an der Virulenz von Robotern, Künstlicher Intelligenz und Transhumanismus als Gegenstand soziokultureller Debatten. Dabei spielen auch fiktionale Erzählungen eine zentrale Rolle – in der Literatur, im Film oder im Computerspiel. Ähnliche Diskurse lassen sich zudem in den Bildenden Künsten, im Theater, in der Popmusik oder in dokumentarischen Formen feststellen.Gemeinsam ist all diesen medialen Formaten, dass die Thematisierung von Robotern, Künstlicher Intelligenz und Transhumanismus eine gesellschaftliche Wirkung entfaltet: Es handelt sich um Technikreflexionen, die die Optimierung der Welt und des Menschen thematisieren und somit die Rezipient*innen mit anthropologischen, ethischen und moralischen Grundfragen konfrontieren.Der Band analysiert und interpretiert historische und zeitgenössische mediale Auseinandersetzungen mit den genannten Technologien. Dabei geht es insbesondere um die Frage, welchen Beitrag kulturelle Artefakte zu Technikdiskursen leisten.

    Like all fundamental categories, work becomes ever more complex as we examine it more closely. The terms "work," "labor," "job," "employment," "occupation," "profession," "vocation," "task," "toil," "effort," "pursuit," and "calling" form a dense web of overlapping and contrasting meanings. Moreover, the analysis of work must contend with how histories of class struggle, gendered and sexual divisions of labor, racial hierarchies, and citizenship regimes have determined who counts as a worker and qualifies for the rights, protections, and social respect thereof. And yet waged work is only the tip of an enormous iceberg that feminist theorists call "socially reproductive labor"—the gendered, mostly unpaid, and hidden work of caring for, feeding, nursing, and teaching the next generation of workers. This collection of essays explores the richness of work as a linguistic, cultural, and historical concept and the conjunctures that are changing work and its worlds.

Willi Wolfgang Barthold erforscht die Wechselwirkung der Literatur des Realismus mit diesem neuen medialen Kommunikationssystem und verbindet dabei Ansätze der Journalliteraturforschung und der Visual Culture Studies. Mit Hilfe einer Untersuchung sowohl kanonisierter als auch bisher kaum berücksichtigter Texte (von Wilhelm Raabe, Theodor Fontane, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach und Balduin Möllhausen) zeigt er, wie sich der Realismus im intermedialen Spannungsfeld seiner Zeit positioniert und durch ein permanentes Hinterfragen der eigenen Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen ein Reflexionswissen produziert, das zur kritischen Beobachtung der entstehenden Massenmedien beiträgt.

    Marshall McLuhans Ausspruch »The medium is the message« gilt in besonderer Weise für das Radio der Sowjetzeit. Indem es Inhalte einem massenhaften Publikum in akustischer Form vermittelt, wird das Radio zum revolutionären Medium, das bürgerliche Wissensformen der Buchkultur zugunsten eines sowjetischen, utopischen Weltverstehens zu überwinden verspricht. Die medienhistorische Studie zeigt auf, wie in den 1920er Jahren die Radiophonie bildungspolitische und künstlerische Visionen freisetzt. Diese verdichten sich mit dem massenmedialen Aufstieg des Radios in den 30er Jahren zu einer Poetik des Akusmatischen, die alle Bereiche der Kultur durchdringt. Sie manifestiert sich im sozialistischen Realismus der optimistischen Literatur und Kunst und prägt das familiale Verständnis von politischer Macht.
