They give ample proof of the fact that authenticity, which depends on giving the impression of being inherent or natural, found not created, frequently turns out to be the result of a careful aesthetic construction that depends on the use of identifiable techniques with the aim of achieving certain effects for certain reasons

The book aims to open media studies and affect theory to deeper engagement with works and theorists outside Euro-America by offering a detailed exploration of the critical discourses and artistic practices of both influential as well as lesser-known theorists and artists. Through case studies, Feeling Media proposes an emergent framework of analysis for the humanities that the author terms the "affective scale." The book reads Japanese media theory as working thought, taking into account its complexity and global interconnectedness while resisting reductive linkages to dominant Euro-American theory. Considering different cultural practices characterised by illusionism, this book suggests a new approach to illusion via media theory. Each of the chapters analyses a specific kind of illusionistic practice and the concept of illusionism it entails in a given context, including philosophy, perception and cognitive theory, performance magic, occultism, optics, physiology, early cinema, cartomancy, spiritualism, architecture, shamanic rituals, and theoretical physics, to show the diversity of shapes that illusionism and illusions can take. The book provides detailed analyses of illusions within performance and ritual magic, philosophy, art history and psychology as well as a first approach to the study of illusions outside of these established fields. It aims to find ways of identifying and analysing a wider range of illusions in the humanities.     Dieses Buch versucht, dem Begriff »Medien« einen systematischen Ort im Kanon des Fachs Philosophie zu geben. Zu diesem Zweck entwickelt die Autorin einen Begriff von Medien, der diese weniger unter dem Aspekt der Informationsvermittlung betrachtet als vielmehr deren transformativen Charakter betont. Exemplarisch wird er an einer zeitgenössischen Konzeption von Schrift vorgeführt, die sich nicht auf die Dimension von verschrifteter Sprache beschränkt, sondern auch logische Notationen oder Computersoftware mit umfasst.     "The Emerging Contours of the Medium explores a crucial - yet largely neglected - aspect of media thinking, focusing particularly on the ‘mediality’ of literature, a medium that remains today on the margins of the theoretical discussion of media. Even though interest in the technological and media aspects of literature has been slowly building momentum in the past several decades, from comparative perspectives to written culture to new media, the concept of the medium has not informed this process, and its systematic integration into literary studies has never been effectively carried out. Nor has the specific mediality of literature been successfully integrated into the general concept of media/lity in media science. Contributors to this work provide both an explanation of and solution to this mutual blindness, setting out from the question: What are the conditions for elaborating a media-theoretical framework in which to situate literature as a medium? The Emerging Contours of the Medium, available for the first time in English, is divided into three parts, which correlate to the three main research areas of the principles for a media theory of literature. Part I develops a perspective of the (pre)history of media thinking, grounding the principles of the genealogical integration. Part II concentrates on and develops the related perspectives of media philosophy and media anthropology. Part III’s main focus is the way media – as dispositifs interlinking the parameters of perception and communication – provide the ground for making emergent media phenomena visible, whether it be between media (in their mutual synergy or discrepancies), between media artefacts, or between human and apparatus."

    "Bringing together philosophies of the maternal with digital technology may appear to be an arbitrary pairing. However, reading them intertextually through select creative practices reveals how both encompass an aesthetics of interruption that becomes a novel means of understanding subjectivity. EL Putnam investigates how the digital performances of certain artists, creators, and technologists rupture existing representations of the maternal, taking advantage of the formal properties of digital media. What results are interruptions of visual and aural constructions through an immanent merging of the performing body with digital technologies. Putnam bases her analysis on close examinations of the way certain makers use the formal properties of digital imagery, such as the gap, the glitch, and the lag, as means of rendering images of the maternal uncanny in order to challenge mediation, constituting an aesthetics of interruption.     In computer games, film, literature, and the press, medial images of the phenomena of amok runs and school shootings play a central role. These statistically quite rare outbursts of violence thus gain an enormous visibility, shaping their collective image. At the same time, psychological perspectives deal with the cause and prevention of this specific form of violence. This volume's interdisciplinary approach to the complex phenomenons of amok runs and school shootings shows the extent to which they constitute a very unsettling momentum, which deeply disturbs a society based on rationalism and economy Westliches Denken und westliche Medien: Haben sie die Welt mit ihren Einheitsrastern überzogen? Welche Universalismen transportieren sie?Dieser Band zeigt: Auch Eigenheiten und Partikulares artikulieren sich in globalisierten Formaten, deren Selbstverständlichkeiten nun zur Debatte gestellt werden.
