"Engaging with current debates over the nature of subjectivity in early modern England, this original study examines sixteenth- and seventeenth-century conceptions of memory and forgetting, and their importance to the drama and culture of the time. Garrett A. Sullivan, Jr., discusses memory and forgetting as categories in terms of which a variety of behaviors - from seeking salvation to pursuing vengeance to succumbing to desire - are conceptualized. Drawing upon a range of literary and non-literary discourses, represented by treatises on the passions, sermons, anti-theatrical tracts, epic poems, and more, Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Webster stage "self-recollection" and, more commonly, "self-forgetting," the latter of which provides a powerful model for dramatic subjectivity. Focusing on works such as Macbeth, Hamlet, Dr. Faustus, and The Duchess of Malfi, Sullivan reveals memory and forgetting to be dynamic cultural forces central to early modern understandings of embodiment, selfhood, and social practice."--BOOK JACKET.

"Christopher Marlowe: Poet & Spy is the most thorough and detailed picture of Marlowe's life in over fifty years. Based on years of meticulous research, Park Honan's biography contains many new findings, including details of Marlowe's home life and schooling, his time at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and his reading, teachers, and early achievements. A newly-discovered letter has provided information on the famous putative portrait at Cambridge, while the Latin writings of Marlowe's friend, Thomas Watson, are used for the first time to illuminate Marlowe's life in London and his career as a spy. There are new accounts of his espionage on the continent, including in particular his arrest in Flushing." "This is also the first biography to investigate thoroughly Marlowe's relationships with fellow playwrights such as Kyd and Shakespeare, and his chief patron, Thomas Walsingham. With closer views of Marlowe in relation to the Elizabethan stage than ever before, Honan examines in detail his aims, mind, and techniques as exhibited in all of his plays, from Dido, the Tamburlaine dramas, and Doctor Faustus through to The Jew of Malta and Edward II." "Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on Marlowe's friendships and homoeroticism. Fresh information is brought to bear on his seductive use of blasphemy, his street fights, his methods of preparing himself for writing, and his atheism and religious interests. The book also explores his attraction to scientists and mathematicians such as Thomas Harriot and others in the Ralegh-Northumberland set of thinkers and experimenters. Finally, there is new data on spies and business agents such as Robert Poley, Nicholas Skeres, and Ingram Frizer, and a detailed account of the circumstances that led up to Marlowe's gruesome murder in Deptford."--BOOK JACKET.

Oriental barbarians, black magicians, homosexuals, African queens and kings, Machiavellian Christians, Turks, and Jews - for an English audience of the sixteenth century, these are marginal, unorthodox, and strange figures. They are also the central figures in the plays of Christopher Marlowe. In Spectacles of Strangeness, Emily C. Bartels focuses on Marlowe's preoccupation with "strangers" and "strange" lands, and his use - and subversion - of Elizabethan stereotypes. Setting Marlovian drama in the context of England's nascent imperialism, Bartels probes the significance of the alien as a vital presence on the Renaissance stage and within Renaissance society. Bartels further examines the reasons that Marlowe (himself a marginalized figure as playwright, and reputedly a homosexual, spy, and atheist) turned again and again to the subject. Bartels argues that what makes Marlowe's dramas so remarkable, important, and subversive is that he evokes these cultural stereotypes only to undermine them: to expose the circumscription of difference as a political strategy, designed to advance the self, state, and status quo over and against some "other." By interrogating Marlowe's works and their relation to England's imperialism, the author helps to explain why the "alien" was such a prominent figure in the Renaissance's theatrical and extra-theatrical discourses and how imperialism influenced the development of the early modern theater and the early modern state. Drawing on new historicist methodologies and recent assessments of colonialist discourse, Spectacles of Strangeness is a stimulating study of one of the most important figures in Renaissance literature and drama.

As the title suggests, these essays on Christopher Marlowe attempt to place the writer and dramatist in the context of the cultural history of his period, with particular reference to its dynamics of social change, aspiration, exploration, conflict and discordance. As such, what characterizes this collection from the conference held in 1993 at the University of Kent at Canterbury, Marlowe's birthplace, to mark the fourth centenary of his death, is its interdisciplinarity. Several of the essays exemplify the variety of approaches which may be taken to the writing of cultural and intellectual history. While fresh perspectives are offered by adducing new documentary and textual evidence, and through the rereading of Marlowe's work in the context of Elizabethan literary Renaissance, space is given in the selection to different interpretations to stimulate debate.
