Selected text passages and film excerpts are analyzed, focusing on the fundamental questions of the novel about the perception and description of time, subject, and identity. Bis heute hält die Forschung an der negativen Perspektivierung höfischer Moralistik fest, an einer pessimistischen Anthropologie im Zeichen des amour-propre. Mit ihrer literaturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchung zur Konversation und Geselligkeit im französischen Salon zeigt Karin Schulz eine optimistische Lesart, welche die sozial-reflexive Produktivität moralistischen Denkens stärkt. Auf der methodischen Grundlage der Erfahrungsdifferenz von Idealität und Realität hinterfragt sie das Selbstverständnis idealer Verhaltensnormen und zeichnet für den französischen Salon, ausgehend vom 17.     This study is about the central place of the emotional world in Beckett's writing. Stating that Beckett is 'primarily about love', Dr. Keller makes a radical re-assessment of his influence and immense popularity. The book examines numerous Beckettian texts, arguing that they embody a struggle to remain in contact with a primal sense of internal goodness, one founded on early experience with the mother. Writing itself becomes an internal dialogue, in which the reader is engaged, between a 'narrative-self' and a mother. Keller suggests that this is Beckett's greatest accomplishment as an artist: to document a universal struggle that allows for the birth of the mind, and to connect this struggle to the origin, and possibility of the creative act. This study integrates highly readable discussions of psychoanalytic theory, as well as clinical examples. It will be of value to scholars and readers of Beckett, and anyone interested in his place in literature and culture.

    An examination of the ways major novels by Marcel Proust, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf draw attention to their embodiment in the object of the book, The Death of the Book considers how bookish format plays a role in some of the twentieth century’s most famous literary experiments. Tracking the passing of time in which reading unfolds, these novels position the book’s so-called death in terms that refer as much to a simple description of its future vis-à-vis other media forms as to the sense of finitude these books share with and transmit to their readers.As he interrogates the affective, physical, and temporal valences of literature’s own traditional format and mode of access, John Lurz shows how these novels stage intersections with the phenomenal world of their readers and develop a conception of literary experience not accounted for by either rigorously historicist or traditionally formalist accounts of the modernist period. Bringing together issues of media and mediation, book history, and modernist aesthetics, The Death of the Book offers a new and deeper understanding of the way we read now

    Cross-media references between literature and photography have always been accompanied by a problematic assumption of transparence, which demands from the text a similar transparency in terms of the reality it depicts to that which is offered by a photograph. Should the photographic act come into view as a referential process, a reality effect can develop whereby the demand for similitude can become secondary. In detailed text analyses on works by Gustave Flaubert, Marcel Proust, Georges Perec and Denis Roche, Johanne Mohs shows that when that happens, even the materiality of language comes to serve the illusion of reality Intermediale Bezugnahmen zwischen Literatur und Fotografie begleitet seit jeher ein problematisches Transparenz-Apriori, das dem Text eine ähnliche Durchsicht auf die dargestellte Wirklichkeit abverlangt wie einer Fotografie. Gerät allerdings der fotografische Akt als Bezugsverfahren in den Blick, kann ein Realitätseffekt entstehen, bei dem Ähnlichkeitsansprüche zweitrangig werden. Ziel ist es jeweils, wichtige literaturtheoretische Grundlagen zu entfalten und diese in ihrem Erklärungspotential für literarische Texte zu erschließen. Es kommt dabei auch zu Rückkopplungen zwischen Theoriediskurs und literarischer Praxis, insofern diese nicht selten in selbstreflexiver Form die eigenen Grundlagen thematisiert und implizite Theoriemodelle entwirft. Behandelt werden Texte aus dem Novellino, von Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec und Modiano. Der Band richtet sich auch an Nicht-Romanisten, weshalb alle romanischsprachigen Zitate übersetzt wurden. Klappentext engl.: If one wants to understand what literature is from a longue durée perspective, it is instructive to examine the terms ‘fiction’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘memory’. Grouped into three sections, analytical studies each focusing on one of these three terms are compiled in this book. These studies introduce suitable theoretical models in this respect, which have been customised so that they can be used in textual analysis. In this way, the book aims to reveal important foundations of literary theory and analyse them in terms of their potential to explain literary texts. This also results in feedback effects between theoretical discourse and literary practice to the extent that they thematise their own foundations, often through self-reflection, and devise implicit theoretical models. The studies deal with texts from Il Novellino and by Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec and Modiano. Tracking the passing of time in which reading unfolds, these novels position the book’s so-called death in terms that refer as much to a simple description of its future vis-à-vis other media forms as to the sense of finitude these books share with and transmit to their readers.As he interrogates the affective, physical, and temporal valences of literature’s own traditional format and mode of access, John Lurz shows how these novels stage intersections with the phenomenal world of their readers and develop a conception of literary experience not accounted for by either rigorously historicist or traditionally formalist accounts of the modernist period.     Will man aus einer Perspektive der longue durée begreifen, was Literatur ist, dann ist es aufschlussreich, sich mit den Begriffen »Fiktion«, »Wissen« und »Gedächtnis« zu befassen. Der vorliegende Band vereinigt, unterteilt in drei Abschnitte, Einzelstudien, die sich jeweils schwerpunktmäßig auf einen dieser drei Begriffe fokussieren. Dabei werden geeignete theoretische Modelle eingeführt und so zugeschnitten, dass sie textanalytisch nutzbar gemacht werden können. Ziel ist es jeweils, wichtige literaturtheoretische Grundlagen zu entfalten und diese in ihrem Erklärungspotential für literarische Texte zu erschließen. Es kommt dabei auch zu Rückkopplungen zwischen Theoriediskurs und literarischer Praxis, insofern diese nicht selten in selbstreflexiver Form die eigenen Grundlagen thematisiert und implizite Theoriemodelle entwirft. Behandelt werden Texte aus dem Novellino, von Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec und Modiano. Der Band richtet sich auch an Nicht-Romanisten, weshalb alle romanischsprachigen Zitate übersetzt wurden If one wants to understand what literature is from a longue durée perspective, it is instructive to examine the terms ‘fiction’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘memory’. Grouped into three sections, analytical studies each focusing on one of these three terms are compiled in this book. These studies introduce suitable theoretical models in this respect, which have been customised so that they can be used in textual analysis. In this way, the book aims to reveal important foundations of literary theory and analyse them in terms of their potential to explain literary texts. This also results in feedback effects between theoretical discourse and literary practice to the extent that they thematise their own foundations, often through self-reflection, and devise implicit theoretical models. The studies deal with texts from Il Novellino and by Dante, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Diderot, Jean Paul, Foscolo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Zola, Capuana, Proust, Simon, Levi, Semprún, Perec and Modiano. This book will also appeal to non-Romanists, which is why all quotations in a foreign language have been translated

    Between 1900 and 1960, many writers in France and Britain either had parallel careers in diplomatic corps or frequented diplomatic circles: Paul Claudel, Albert Cohen, Lawrence Durrell, Graham Greene, John le Carré, André Malraux, Nancy Mitford, Marcel Proust, and others. What attracts writers to diplomacy, and what attracts diplomats to publishing their experiences in memoirs or novels? Like novelists, diplomats are in the habit of describing situations with an eye for atmosphere, personalities, and looming crises. Yet novels about diplomats, far from putting a solemn face on everything, often devolve into comedy if not outright farce. Anachronistic yet charming, diplomats take the long view of history and social transformation, which puts them out of step with their times - at least in fiction. In this collection of essays, eleven contributors reflect on diplomacy in French and British novels, with particular focus on temporality, style, comedy, characterization, and the professional liabilities attached to representing a state abroad. With archival examples as evidence, the essays in this volume indicate that modern fiction, especially fiction about diplomacy, is a response to the increasing speed of communication, the decline of imperial power, and the ceding of old ways of negotiating to new

    Victims of the Book uncovers a long-neglected but once widespread subgenre: the fin-de-siècle novel of formation in France. Novels about and geared toward adolescent male readers were imbued with a deep worry over young Frenchmen’s masculinity, as evidenced by titles like Crise de jeunesse (Youth in Crisis, 1897), La Crise virile (Crisis of Virility, 1898), La Vie stérile (A Sterile Life, 1892), and La Mortelle Impuissance (Deadly Impotence, 1903). In this book, François Proulx examines a wide panorama of these novels, many of which have rarely been studied, as well as polemical essays, pedagogical articles, and medical treatises on the perceived threats posed by young Frenchmen’s reading habits. Against this cultural backdrop, he illuminates all that was at stake in representations of the male reader by prominent novelists of the period, including Jules Vallès, Paul Bourget, Maurice Barrès, André Gide, and Marcel Proust. In the final decades of the nineteenth century, social commentators insistently characterized excessive reading as an emasculating illness that afflicted French youth. Fin-de-siècle writers responded to this pathologization of reading with a profusion of novels addressed to young male readers, paradoxically proposing their own novels as potential cures. In the early twentieth century, this corpus was critically revisited by a new generation of writers. Victims of the Book shows how Gide and Proust in particular reworked the fin-de-siècle paradox to subvert cultural norms about literature and masculinity, proposing instead a queer pact between writer and reader

Die Entstehung des Buches im Istanbuler Exil ohne westliche Bibliotheken ist legendär. Weniger bekannt sind seine luziden Essays und detailreichen Studien zur romanischen Philologie, die Gustav Konrad und Fritz Schalk posthum ergänzt um wichtige Rezensionen herausbrachten. Methodisch stand der deutsch-jüdische Gelehrte sowohl der Frankfurter Literatursoziologie seines Freundes Walter Benjamin nahe als auch der hermeneutischen Tradition an der Universität Marburg; zudem gibt es Nähen zur Ikonographie der Warburg Schule. Das Nachwort gibt im wissenschaftshistorischen Rahmen eine Skizze von Erich Auerbach als Kulturphilosophen im Exil, der eine vieldeutige wie außergewöhnliche Position zwischen jüdischen, christlichen und säkularen Traditionen des Denkens einnimmt. Die Neuausgabe der "Gesammelten Aufsätze" wurde um vier Arbeiten werkgeschichtlich ergänzt. Eine von ihnen, "Vicos Auseinandersetzung mit Descartes", galt bislang als verschollen und wurde erst kürzlich gefunden. Eine ausführliche Bibliographie schließt Lücken der Primärliteratur.

Weniger bekannt sind seine luziden Essays und detailreichen Studien zur romanischen Philologie, die Gustav Konrad und Fritz Schalk posthum - ergänzt um wichtige Rezensionen - herausbrachten. Methodisch stand der deutsch-jüdische Gelehrte sowohl der Frankfurter Literatursoziologie seines Freundes Walter Benjamin nahe als auch der hermeneutischen Tradition an der Universität Marburg; zudem gibt es Nähen zur Ikonographie der Warburg Schule. Das Nachwort gibt im wissenschaftshistorischen Rahmen eine Skizze von Erich Auerbach als Kulturphilosophen im Exil, der eine vieldeutige wie außergewöhnliche Position zwischen jüdischen, christlichen und säkularen Traditionen des Denkens einnimmt. Die Neuausgabe der "Gesammelten Aufsätze" wurde um vier Arbeiten werkgeschichtlich ergänzt. Eine von ihnen, "Vicos Auseinandersetzung mit Descartes", galt bislang als verschollen und wurde erst kürzlich gefunden. Eine ausführliche Bibliographie schließt Lücken der Primärliteratur.

    This volume fulfills the author's career-long reflections on radical otherness in literature. J. Hillis Miller investigates otherness through ten nineteenth- and twentieth-century authors: Friedrich Schlegel, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Joseph Conrad, W. B. Yeats, E. M. Forster, Marcel Proust, Paul de Man, and Jacques Derrida. From the exquisite close readings for which he is celebrated, Miller reaps a capacious understanding of otherness--one reachable not through theory but through literature itself. Otherness has wide valence in contemporary literary and cultural studies and is often understood as a misconception by hegemonic groups of subaltern ones. In a pleasing counter to this, Others conceives of otherness as something that inhabits sameness. Instances of the ''wholly other'' within the familiar include your sense of self or your beloved, your sense of your culture as such, or your experience of literary, theoretical, and philosophical works that belong to your own culture--works that are themselves haunted by otherness. Though Others begins and ends with chapters on theorists, the testimony they offer about otherness is not taken as more compelling than that of such literary works as Dicken's Our Mutual Friend, Conrad's ''The Secret Sharer,'' Yeats's ''Cold Heaven,'' or Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. Otherness, as this book finds it in the writers read, is not an abstract concept. It is an elusive feature of specific verbal constructs, different in each case. It can be glimpsed only through close readings that respect this diversity, as the plural in the title--Others--indicates. We perceive otherness in the way that the unseen--and the characters' emotional responses to it--ripples the conservative ideological surface of Howard's End. We sense it as chaos in Schlegel's radical concept of irony. And we gaze at it in the multiple personifications of Heart of Darkness. Each testifies in its own way to the richness and tangible weight of an otherness close at hand
