This book is based upon three interrelated open naturalistic studies conducted to better characterise the motivational orientation of students in higher education. Open semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with undergraduates, students at community colleges and students in taught postgraduate courses in Hong Kong. The analysis used an exploratory grounded theory approach and resulted in a motivational orientation framework with six continua with positive and negative poles. On enrolment students had positions on the six facets of motivation, which shifted as they progressed through their degree according to their perceptions of the teaching and learning environment. The framework can, therefore, be used to explain both initial decisions to enrol and motivation to continue studying. The interviews included descriptions of teaching approaches and learning activities and their effects on motivation. This made it possible to describe a teaching and learning environment conducive to motivation, with eight supportive conditions. Each facet of the teaching and learning environment is illustrated with quotations from the three groups of students, resulting in a guide to configuring a teaching and learning environment conducive to motivating students. The emerging community-college sector in Hong Kong is used as a case study of the effects on student motivation of the expansion of the higher education sector through private colleges. Cultural issues are discussed, particularly the performance of Asian students relative to those in the West.

Auf Grundlage eines rezeptionsästhetischen Literaturverständnisses und einer „sinnorientierten Didaktik“ (Gebhard & Combe 2007) rekonstruiert Elisabeth Bracker in ihrer Arbeit Schülergespräche mithilfe der dokumentarischen Methode, die sich an einem literar-ästhetischen Gegenstand im Englischunterricht entzünden. Über die Rekonstruktion ermöglicht die Autorin Einblicke in sprachliche, inhaltliche und interaktional-soziale (Sinnstiftungs-)Prozesse, die sich in einem schulisch inszenierten „literarischen Erfahrungsraum“ abspielen. Insgesamt versteht sich die Arbeit als Plädoyer für die Realisierung bildender Erfahrungsräume im Unterricht. Der Inhalt Sinnkonstruktions- und Interaktionsprozesse im Literaturunterricht Grundannahmen der rekonstruktiven Sozialforschung dokumentarische Methode zur Rekonstruktion der Schülergespräche ausführliche Einzelfalldarstellung/ fallübergreifende Ergebnisdarstellung Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der schülerselbstgesteuerten Anschlusskommunikation Die Zielgruppen Dozierende und Studierende der Sozialwissenschaften, insbesondere der qualitativen Sozialforschung und englischen Literaturdidaktik Schulpädagogen Die AutorIn Elisabeth Bracker arbeitete von 2009 bis 2013 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Erziehungswissenschaften an der Universität Hamburg, wo sie 2014 im Bereich der Didaktik der englischen Sprache und Literatur promovierte. Derzeit ist sie Referendarin mit den Fächern Englisch und Deutsch an einem Berliner Gymnasium.

    Das Heranwachsen im 21. Jahrhundert ist ausgehend von gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen, die meist unter dem Schlagwort der Individualisierung subsummiert werden, durch vielfältige Lebensformen gekennzeichnet. Pluralisierungseffekte sowie die stetige Weiterentwicklung und rasante Verbreitung von digitalen Medien bedingen und verstärken sich. Die Lebensphasen Kindheit und Jugend werden in Hinblick auf Begrenzungen und Entgrenzungen diskutiert. Unter inhaltlichen Gesichtspunkten wie der Verschmelzung medialer und non-medialer Welten, einer Ausweitung und dem gleichzeitigen Verschwimmen von Lebensphasen, ungleichen Ressourcenverteilungen und Mobilität in einer globalisierten Welt werden jugendbezogene und medienpädagogische Fragestellungen miteinander verknüpft. So erfolgt u.a. eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskursen, widerständigen Alltagspraktiken von Jugendlichen, diversitätsbewusster Jugendforschung und-arbeit sowie medienerzieherischen Konzepten.
