    This book reports on a longitudinal study of the acquisition of pragmatic markers in written discourse in a third language (English) by secondary students living in the bilingual (Spanish and Catalan) Valencian Community in Spain. It examines pragmatic transfer, specifically positive transfer, in multilingual students from a holistic perspective, taking into account their linguistic repertoire and using ecologically valid classroom writing tasks in a longitudinal study. It tackles the issue of task-based language teaching from a multilingual perspective by presenting a study which takes place in natural classroom contexts where real classroom tasks are used to explore the interaction between languages in multilinguals. The book combines a focus on multilingual language development and pragmatics and discusses the resources multilingual learners take to the classroom

    The cultural production of Spanish-speaking New York is closely linked to the Caribbean and to Latin America at large, but the city also plays a pivotal role in the work of a host of authors from the Iberian Peninsula, writing in Spanish, Catalan, and English. In many cases, their New York City texts have marked their careers and the history of their national literatures. Drawing from a variety of genres, Translating New York recovers cultural narratives occluded by single linguistic or national literary histories, and proposes that reading these texts through the lens of translation unveils new pathways of cultural circulation and influence. Looking beyond representations of the city's physical space, Translating New York suggests that travel to the city and contact with New York's multilingual setting ignited a heightened sensitivity towards both the verbal and non-verbal languages of the city, garnering literary achievement and aesthetic innovation. Analyzing the novels, poetry, and travel narratives of Felipe Alfau, José Moreno Villa, Julio Camba, and Josep Pla, this book uncovers an international perspective of Iberian literatures. Translating New York aims to rethink Iberian literatures through the transatlantic travels of influential writers. The pre-publication version of Translating New York was awarded the 2017 Northeast Modern Language Association Book Award for the best unpublished book-length manuscript on modern language literature.

    El presente ensayo trata de la presencia e influencia del Decadentismo italiano en la literatura catalana, desde finales del siglo XIX hasta el final de la I Guerra Mundial (con breves consideraciones sobre los años 20). Para ello se centra en el análisis de la recepción crítica del Decadentismo en el contexto de llegada, siguiendo el orden cronológico de las sucesivas interpretaciones de esta corriente que tuvieron lugar en la época. Partiendo de los inicios de dicha recepción, que debemos situar hacia 1880, el volumen analiza las más importantes lecturas del Decadentismo italiano en ámbito catalán, las cuales se producen principalmente dentro de la corriente vitalista y regeneracionista, a finales del siglo XIX, y del programa culturalista, ya en la primera década del siglo XX. En el mismo sentido, el presente ensayo reflexiona, por ejemplo, sobre la influencia que ejerció el Decadentismo en la formulación de un teatro poético nacional en la Cataluña. Asimismo, aborda el cambio de signo que constituyó el ascenso del Novecentismo en el panorama cultural catalán y cómo dicho ascenso influyó en la recepción posterior del Decadentismo italiano, para concluir con el análisis de dicha recepción en los años de la Gran Guerra.

    La Guerra Civil y el franquismo provocaron víctimas en toda España. No obstante, hasta hoy, no todas las víctimas reciben la misma atención pública. Las historias olvidadas o insuficientemente escuchadas forman parte de la literatura de la memoria en lengua castellana, catalana y vasca. Allí se ponen en escena versiones de memoria alternativas, muchas veces, historias y víctimas nacionales. Este libro ofrece un nuevo paradigma de víctimas basado en diez novelas en castellano, catalán y vasco, siendo la víctima el centro de interés. Y se estudia cómo en estas literaturas emerge, entre la figura de la víctima y el victimario, la figura intermedia de un tercero.

    This manual is intended to fill a gap in the area of Romance studies. There is no introduction available so far that broadly covers the field of Catalan linguistics, neither in Catalan nor in any other language. The work deals with the language spoken in Catalonia and Andorra, the Balearic Islands, the region of Valencia, Northern Catalonia and the town of l'Alguer in Sardinia. Besides introducing the ideologies of language and nation and the history of Catalan linguistics, the manual is divided into separate parts embracing the description – grammar, lexicon, variation and varieties – and the history of the language since the early medieval period to the present day.
