    L'affascinante progetto espositivo traccia un itinerario veramente ‘introspettivo', dove il visitatore è accompagnato attraverso sei distinte sezioni; un percorso che attraversa il tempo, dall'antichità (straordinari i reperti archeologici), fino all'arte contemporanea (le opere di tre grandi artisti di questo nostro tempo). Il soggetto principale e assoluto è lo stesso concetto di Giustizia, nei suoi mutamenti semantici e allegorici, nonché in tanti esempi della storia, del mito, delle Sacre Scritture; tutto tradotto in opere d'arte, eloquentemente reso dagli artisti – i privilegiati interpreti sia della soggettività che del sentire comunitario – nelle diverse declinazioni legate a ciascuna epoca, sino ad oggi. Il messaggio finale, profondissimo apologo di questa esposizione, è che non c'è Giustizia senza umanità, e non c'è umanità senza Giustizia. Quell'ordine superiore, quel tendere costante alla parte migliore, quello stabilire il ‘giusto' al di sopra della parti mediante un complesso processo di conoscenza e valutazione, contro le colpe e le cadute in cui fatalmente può incorrere l'uomo, da tanti e tanti secoli è per noi evocato e sollecitato soprattutto dall'immagine di una donna bellissima e coronata, reggente bilancia e spada, che tutto vede, anche se a volte bendata e che, seduta in trono, ci impone i principi fondanti del vivere civile; lei inflessibile, incorruttibile, ‘giusta', donna che proprio in quanto tale è tuttavia assoluta quintessenza di umanità

    In de late middeleeuwen geven rechterlijke colleges de opdracht aan kunstenaars om hun rechtszalen te decoreren. Favoriete onderwerpen zijn de zogenaamde exempla iustitiae, voorbeelden van goede (en slechte) rechterlijke oordelen uit de Bijbel, de geschiedenis en legenden. Pas met de renaissance wordt het vandaag overbekende allegorische beeld van Vrouwe Justitia, met haar weegschaal, zwaard en blinddoek geboren. Laatste Oordelen, gerechtigheidstaferelen en allegorieën, maar ook artistieke uitbeeldingen van de, soms bloederige, rechtspraktijk worden in dit boek kunst- en rechtshistorisch geduid. Het thema recht en gerechtigheid is razend actueel en krijgt hier een (kunst)historische invulling die zowel leek als expert zal aanspreken. De tentoonstelling brengt meer dan 120 werken uit Belgische en internationale tentoonstellingen en privéverzamelingen bij elkaar rond de Brugse topwerken. During the late-medieval period, law courts frequently commissioned paintings to grace their Aldermen chambers. Among the favourite themes were the so-called exempla iustitiae, examples of 'good' and 'bad' justice, derived from Biblical, historical and legendary tales. It was not until the Renaissance that the well-known image of Lady Justice took shape, recognised by her scales, sword and blindfold.0In this book, depictions of the Last Judgement and other justice scenes, as well as allegories and visualisations of (sometimes gruesome) torture and execution practices are placed within an art-historical and legal-historical context. The authors' approaches to the highly popular theme of law and justice will appeal to both experts and novices with the subjects.
